• German word damson, which means “stretch to drag. Dancing may
be the oldest among all the arts
• Dance is considered the mirror of the society because it responds to
historical and religious events as well as social and political
statements.
• Dancing is an art that needs no
instrument because the
dancer’s body is the
instrument.
• The music of early man came
from stamping of feet, clapping
of hands, snapping of fingers,
or any sound that can produce
rhythm.
• It is an art of precise
expression of one’s emotion
through graceful movement,
performed with musical
accompaniment.
• Dance is considered the mirror
of the society because it
responds to historical and
religious events, as well as
social and political statements.
People dance for all kinds of
reasons
• - to praise GOD, to mourn, to
celebrate, to heal, to give thanks,
to preserve cultural heritage and
treasured legends, to
demonstrate physical prowess, to
assert individuality, to provoke
and to entertain.
PREHISTORIC PERIOD

• Very basic, as it involved everyday


movements
• It served as an important means of
communication and revolved around
life events that were meaningful to
individuals and tribes.
• SHAMANS spearhead who are said to
possess magical powers and who acted
as physicians, religious leaders, and lead
dancers.
• They kept the tribes healthy, prosperous,
and safe
• They performed and imparted dances and
rituals to the the people who combat and
win over environmental forces and remain
in good graces with the GODs and the
spirits.
• A shaman is someone who is
regarded as having access to,
and influence in, the world of
benevolent and malevolent
spirits, who typically enters into
a trance state during a ritual,
and practices divination and
healing.

ANCIENT CIVILIZATION
• Ancient Egypt
--- Egyptian’s primary way of expressing
their religious services, and teaching myths.
The major dancer were the following:
• The king
• The priests who performed magical
dances
• The virgin who were trained to perform
ceremonies
• Ancient Crete/ Cretan
--- cultural link in the ancient world between
Egyptians and Greeks.
• Were sophisticated and rich in arts.
• Dance themes included military training,
healing, religious rituals and
entertainment.
• Ancient Greece
• --- were extremely organized and
structured.
• Incorporated ritualistic, symbolic/
representative gestures and were
accompanied by music, both vocal and
instrumental.
• Phorai and cheironomia are Greek terms
that describe the carriage of the body
during dance and mimetic gesture.
• Schemata refers to the form and shape of
gestures, focusing on how a dancer
executed the short movement patterns.
• Deixis was pure dance, performed by a
male Greek dancer who portrayed the
essence of a human character, an animal,
or a natural element such as fire or wind.
ROME
• Rome
--- Roman era dances were primarily
performed for religious, social, and
entertainment purposes
They frequently highlighted burlesque,
overtly erotic, comic, and frightening
elements.
• Pantomime and mimes were among the
famous performances during the Roman
period.
“pantomime” refers to a
performance by an actor/solo
dancer who does not speak
but acts in a stylized form

ASSIGNMENT
• Form a group of five members each. With your
knowledge of the dances during the prehistoric
and ancient civilization, create a timeline of the
historic development of dance. Create an artistic
presentation in any form and made of recycled
materials.
