Chapter Two: Talking the Theory

This chapter gives an elaborate explanation of communication theory and how the

various methods can be used to evaluate the communication theory. It begins with a brief

introduction of what communication means; it is a social process of creating and

understanding messages(text) that elicit a reply. There are various ways that communication

theory can be evaluated they include. Scientific method theory, according to Karl Popper, a

good theory is testable. It must undergo what we call falsifiability; Falsifiability means theory

can be tested and disproved if it is wrong. It is tested through various scientific research

methods. The second way of testing is the interpretive method. It discusses the theory based

on two bases: clarification of values; the ability to bring people's values into open

light(Chitode, 2021). The other way is through understanding people, offering fresh insight

about the people. It is essential to use the scientific or interpretive because it gives clear

direction on which way to take in course work; the other reason is you can’t understand a

theory unless you get familiar with perception, truths, and the purpose of the theory. The final

testing method is intuition; this refers to the relationships, possibilities that go beyond

information from your physical senses.

Hello, I agree that communication is very vital when we talk about theory. We need

clear communication to understand a particular theory fully. Every theory needs to be tested

to be proved valid or disapproved if it is indeed. Many theories have been developed, and they

are beneficial in our coursework to help grasp certain concepts. The relevance of a theory is

based on its purpose, truth about its assumptions. Therefore, there is a need for it to be tested.

Interpretive is the best way to validate a theory, unlike scientific, entirely based on quantitive

research. Interpretive help to look into the nature of people and their values. It engages the

community. Interpretive theory helps to generate changes, creating reforms in the society
because it is based on qualitative research. Scientific methods are helpful to the scholars and

the researchers and may not affect change yo the community.

Chapter Four: Mapping the Territory

Apart from understanding the communication theory, it is good to understand the

fields of communication theory; this can be understood through various surveys. This chapter

highlights the seven fields of communication Theory. The first field is Rhetorical tradition; in

this field, communication is an artful public address. It is relative speech distinguishes human

from animals and how single speaker influences multitudes. The second one is the

Phenomenology tradition in this field; communication is viewed as an experience of self and

another individual through dialogue getting information from the people living it. The other

field is Ethical tradition(Houston & Buzzanell, 2018). This comes as a result of ethical

responsibility. People of a specific ethical character interact in beneficial ways. The fourth

one is Social tradition which states communication is the creation of the social reality. The

fifth one is Semiotic Tradition which states that communication is a process of sharing

through signs. The other field is the cybernetic tradition in this area; communication is viewed

as artificial intelligence. The final one is Critical Tradition communication is a reflective

challenge to unjust discourse.

Hello, I agree with the author; we also need to understand the various fields of

communication theory. Apart from testing the theory, it's essential to understand their context

to make the communication relevant. Ethical tradition is majorly applicable in a major

organization, workplace, business away from their homes. They are exposed to a new culture,

values that shape their mode of interaction. Due to globalization and westernization, there

have been dynamic changes in culture; this has affected how people talk, eat, and interact.

During this process, they engage in social-cultural tradition. Another critical field that has

expanded is the Internet and modern technology. This has brought a new phenomenon of
artificial intelligence. This has hit the world people can interact and relate with other people

worldwide through digital platforms.
