IV- PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the Determine the steps in locating the epicenter of an earthquake through triangulation method.
new lesson 1. Gather the data showing the difference in the arrival time of P wave and S wave on
three seismic recording stations.
2. Compute the distance of the epicenter form each of the stations.
3. Choose one of the recording stations and measure the computed distance on the
map scale. Set your compass for that computed distance.
4. Center your compass on the station you have chosen. Draw a circle. Repeat steps
3 and 4 for the rest of the stations. You should get three circles that intersect or
nearly intersect at a point. This intersection is the epicenter.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson Let the students look at Figure 2: Map of Plate Boundaries on page 7 and ask them the
following questions
a. What is the difference between Figure 1 and a regular World map?
Answers may vary.
b. What do you think is the basis of dividing the world in such manner?
Answers may vary.

C. Presenting illustrative examples/instances of Introduce to the learners Activity 2 “Let’s Mark the Boundaries” and tell them that the next
the lesson activity will help them confirm their answers to the last question. (Refer to page 11-13 of
Learner’s Material)

D. Discussing the new concepts and practicing Discuss new concepts through presentation of their outputs.
new skills#1
E. Discussing new concepts and new skills #2 Compare the distributions of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain
belts.

F. Developing mastery(guides formative Discuss their answers on the guide questions given in the activity.
assessment)
G. Making generalizations and abstractions about How will you relate the distribution of mountain ranges with the distribution of earthquake
the lesson epicenters and volcanoes?
Mountain ranges are found in places where volcanoes and/or earthquake epicenters are also
located.

H. Finding Practical applications of concepts and What do you think is the importance of determining the active volcanoes, earthquake
skills in daily living epicenters, and mountain belts?
Answers may vary.

I. Evaluation of Learning Questions from the activity 2 will serve as Formative Assessment.

J. Additional activities for application or What do you think is the basis of scientists in dividing Earth’s lithosphere into several plates?
remediation
