MORTARS AND PASTES
3

7.0 GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

Mortars and pastes specified herein are those usually used at works in general. For works
where local and environmental conditions require special materials, the design shall specify
them in accordance with specific requirements.

7.1 MORTARS

7.1.1 Design

The mortar protection coating design shall define:

• The type of coating (with number of layers);

• Type of mortar;
• Layer thicknesses;
• Architecture and construction details (drip cap, joint, etc.);
• Most appropriate execution techniques;
• Quality standard for services.

These definitions shall be defined based on technological parameters, taking into account the
substrate and coating requirements in face of exposure conditions.

7.1.2 Classification

Mortars can be:

• Prepared in loco;
• Industrial: these are already prepared and dehydrated mortars. For
application, they need only to be mixed with water in accordance with the
proportions recommended by manufacturers.

Prepared in loco or industrial mortars can be:

• Simple: consisting of a binder (cement) and fine aggregate (sand), with the
possibility of specific admixtures being added in accordance with the
manufacturer's instructions;
• Waterproof: constituted by sand and cement mortar with water repellent
being added to the mass in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction;

plain, with finishes specified for each type of service. These are also used for
leveling foundations and bases of equipment or steel structures;
• Filling: mortars used in concrete joints, for filling cavities, for grouting and in
connections of precast reinforced concrete pieces.

7.2 PASTES

7.2.1 Composition

General purpose cement pastes are:

• Pastes: water added to the ratio of 20% and 30% over the weight of cement
and admixtures. For the latter, if specified, proportions shall be as
recommended by the manufacturer.

Fine aggregates granulometry shall be within the limits provided in standard NBR 7211.

8.1.2.3 Water

The water used in the mix shall be previously qualified and subject to approval by the
inspection team. It shall not contain harmful quantities of oils, acids, chlorides, sulfates,
organic matters or other impurities that may interfere in the cement hydration reactions and
affect the mortar final cure and aspect (color).

Potable water shall be considered good quality water for use in mortars.

8.1.2.4 Admixtures

Admixtures in general may be used, in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations

and with approval by the inspection team. Admixtures shall comply with standards NBR
10908, NBR 11768 and NBR 12317.

8.1.3 Composition and Use

The mortar composition (mix) shall be specified in accordance with its use, as per standard
NBR 13281.

The application of coating mortars shall comply with standard NBR 7200.

8.1.4 Classification and Application

The suggested mortar class and application are specified in Table 8.1.
