Elem Ed 1: Laboratory Exercise 1
Objectives

At the end of this activity, students must have:

1. Be oriented with the safety guidelines in the laboratory classes especially for the
children
2. Enumerated the basic safety guidelines working in the laboratory particularly in Biology
and Chemistry classes
3. Mastered and demonstrated proper safety precautions and procedure in the Lab
4. Developed the value of “Safety First” at all times

Laboratory Safety Manual

Concepts:

Safety rules are guidelines designed to help keep you safe while doing activities inside the
Laboratory. Lab equipment and chemicals can cause serious harm. Thus, it is always essential
to follow all lab safety rules. The most helpful safety rule is to use plain old common sense.

There are general safety rules working in the Laboratory but be aware that in every discipline
(e.g. Biology, Chemistry) there will be special precautions and procedures to be followed. In
this activity, you will be oriented with the general laboratory guidelines for kids, in Biology and
in chemistry Laboratories.

Science experiments are important for children in understanding the theories and concepts of
science to supplement their learnings from lecture or from the textbooks. However, there is
risk for children in the lab especially when they will be handling chemicals and lab equipments
and materials.

A. General Safety Rules

1. Familiarize the materials, equipment and their location in the lab before doing
anything.
2. Kids should not be allowed to touch any chemicals or lab equipment unless they are
instructed to do so.
3. Students should never ever work in science lab in the absence of their teachers.
4. Students must follow all the written and verbal instructions when conducting the
science experiment. They must be instructed at all times to clarify the materials and
procedure of a given lab experiment/activity.
5. Be alert and cautious at all times.
6. Eating, drinking, playing pranks, using mobile phones, or listening to music should be
strictly prohibited. The use of mobile gadgets may be allowed if the activity requires for
it though.
7. Before using any chemicals, read the label carefully.
8. When mixing chemicals or conducting the experiment, keep the test tube containing
the chemical away from your face, mouth, and body.
9. Unused chemicals should never be put back in the original bottle. They must be
disposed of as per the guidelines given by the lab assistant or science teacher.

10. Students must wear safety goggles, lab coat, and shoes in the science laboratory.
Loose clothes, sandals, and open hairs are strictly not allowed in the lab.
11. Examine glassware before using. Chipped or cracked test tubes or beakers should not
be used at all.
12. Hot apparatus take time to cool down. Allow time to cool them down and use tongs or
heat protective gloves to pick them up.
13. If any accident takes place, do not panic. Inform your teacher or the lab assistant
immediately for help.

B. Safety in Chemistry Lab

1. Avoid inhaling in fumes that may be generated during an activity or investigation.
2. Never fill pipettes by mouth suction. Always use the suction bulbs or pumps.
3. Do not force glass tubing into rubber stoppers. Use glycerin as a lubricant and hold the
tubing with a towel as you ease the glass into the stopper.
4. Proper procedures provided by the instructor shall be followed when using any heating
or flame producing device especially gas burners. Never leave a flame unattended.
Remember that hot glass looks the same as cold glass. After heating, glass remains
hot for a very long time. Determine if an object is hot by placing your hand close to
the object but do not touch it.
5. Should a fire drill, lockdown, or other emergency occur during an investigation or
activity, make sure you turn off all gas burners and electrical equipment. During an
evacuation emergency, exit the room as directed. During a lockdown, move out of the
line of sight from doors and windows if possible or as directed.
6. Always read bottle labels twice before you use the chemical. Be certain the chemical
you use is the correct one.
7. Replace the top on any chemical bottle as soon as you have finished using it and
return the bottle to the designated location (even if there are others behind you).
8. Do not return unused chemicals to the original container. Follow the instructor’s
directions for the storage or disposal of these materials.
9. All chemicals should be regarded as hazardous unless your instructor informs you
otherwise.
10. Never mix or heat chemicals unless you are directed to do so. When mixing
concentrated acids and water, always pour acids into water slowly and stir constantly.
11. When observing the odor of any liquid, do not smell it directly. Use your hand to fan
the odor towards you.
12. Never taste a chemical or a solution or touch chemicals with your hands unless
directed to do so by your instructor.
13. When heating a test tube, do not heat just one spot on the test tube. Never have the
open end of the test tube pointed at anyone. Never look directly down into a test tube.
14. Always allow ample time for cooling after materials have been heated. DO NOT
DISCARD or STORE HOT/HEATED OBJECTS

C. Safety in Biology Lab

Familiarize the following safety symbols visible inside the Laboratory.

Handling Living Organisms

1. No investigations that will cause pain, discomfort, or harm to mammals, birds,
reptiles, fish, and amphibians should be done in the classroom or at home.
2. Treat all living things with care and respect. Do not touch any organism in the
classroom or laboratory unless given permission to do so. Many plants are
poisonous or have thorns, and even tame animals may bite or scratch if alarmed.
3. Animals should be handled only if necessary. If an animal is excited or frightened,
pregnant, feeding, or with its young, special handling is required.
4. Your teacher will instruct you as to how to handle each species that may be
brought into the classroom.
5. Treat all microorganisms as if they were harmful. Use antiseptic procedure, as
directed by your teacher, when working with microbes. Dispose of microbes as
your teacher directs.
6. Clean your hands thoroughly after handling animals or the cage containing
animals.
7. Wear gloves when handling small mammals. Report animal bites or stings to your
teacher at once.

When an investigation or lab session is completed, clean up your work area and return all
equipment to its proper place. Wash your hands after every investigation. Turn off all
burners before leaving the laboratory. Check that the gas line leading to the burner is off
as well.

Procedure

1. After reading all the safety guidelines working in the laboratory, design a chart for safety
guidelines in the lab for:
● Chemistry
● Biology

Be creative in your output to ensure that it is very attractive and understandable to the
children in your class. You may use apps available online for this.

2. From online sources, get a clear mage of a document that shows safety symbols and their
meanings for laboratory rooms. Indicate your sources below the image.

3. Below is a sample of Safety Contract that teachers request their students to fill up and sign
accordingly. Consider that they are minors and therefore would require the consent from the
parents. Design your own Safety Contract for your laboratory class in elementary science.

SAFETY CONTRACT

Further Questions

1. Why is it important for the teachers in elementary science to be fully aware and skilled at
demonstrating the safety actions and behavior inside a laboratory class?

- it is important for teachers in elementary science to be fully aware and skilled at

demonstrating the safety actions and behavior inside a laboratory class so that there is less
unexpected accidents that would happen during the teacher’s class. Students in elementary
class is much clumsier than those of higher grades that is why it is very important that the
teacher knows the safety protocols and let the students wear protective gears. It is also
needed for the teacher to be skilled at demonstrating so that the students would listen and
understand the science class well.

2. What must be the right attitude for teachers in the Lab?

- the attitude of the teacher in a Lab must be skillful, open-minded, aware, careful, can guide
and can instruct students to behave well in the Science class

3. What should be the necessary attitude of learners inside the Laboratory? How will teach this
attitude to your students in the future?

- the necessary attitude of learners is that they must have curiosity, objectivity, creativity,
critical-thinking and also open-mindedness in them. I can teach this to students by guiding
them well and giving them the necessary information so that they will be attentive and will
have the will to experiment and use this attitudes or abilities.
