II - Course Objectives
1.
To Explore the classification, impact, and significance of renewable energy sources.
2.
To Understand the fundamentals of solar radiation and photovoltaic cell characteristics.
3.
To Design and assess solar photovoltaic systems, including components and configurations
4. To Examine the principles, types, and efficiency of wind energy systems and their grid
integration.
5.
To Study various renewable energy resources and their potential applications.

III - Course Content


Preamble:
This course delves into renewable energy systems, covering the fundamentals of energy sources,
environmental impacts, and technical aspects of solar photovoltaics and wind energy. Students will
gain insights into system design, performance characteristics, and integration challenges of various
renewable technologies. The course aims to provide a solid foundation in sustainable energy
solutions and their practical applications.
Unit – I INTRODUCTION 9 Hours
Classification of energy sources – Co2 Emission - Features of Renewable energy - Renewable energy
scenario in India -Environmental aspects of electric energy conversion: impacts of renewable energy
generation on environment Per Capital Consumption - CO2 Emission - importance of renewable
energy sources, Potentials – Achievements– Applications.
Unit – II SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAICS 9 Hours
Solar Energy: Sun and Earth-Basic Characteristics of solar radiation- angle of sunrays on solar
collector-Estimating Solar Radiation Empirically - Equivalent circuit of PV Cell- Photovoltaic cell
characteristics: P-V and I-V curve of cell-Impact of Temperature and Insolation on I-V characteristics-
Shading Impacts on I-V characteristics-Bypass diode -Blocking diode.
Unit – III PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM DESIGN 9 Hours
Block diagram of solar photo voltaic system : Line commutated converters (inversion mode) - Boost
and buck-boost converters - selection of inverter, battery sizing, array sizing - PV systems
classification- standalone PV systems - Grid tied and grid interactive inverters- grid connection
issues.
Unit – IV WIND ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEMS 9 Hours
Origin of Winds: Global and Local Winds- Aerodynamics of Wind turbine-Derivation of Betz’s limit
Power available in wind-Classification of wind turbine: Horizontal Axis wind turbine and Vertical axis
wind turbine- Aerodynamic Efficiency-Tip Speed-Tip Speed Ratio-Solidity-Blade Count-Power curve
of wind turbine - Configurations of wind energy conversion systems: Type A, Type B, Type C and Type
D Configurations- Grid connection Issues - Grid integrated SCIG and PMSG based WECS.
Unit – V OTHER RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES 9 Hours
Qualitative study of different renewable energy resources: ocean, Biomass, Hydrogen energy systems,
Fuel cells, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), Tidal and wave energy, Geothermal Energy
Resources.
