LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN MUSIC 6

Quarter 4 (Week 5-6)

Name: ________________________________________ Date: __________

Grade & Section:_______________________________
I. LEARNING COMPETENCY with code
➢ Distinguishes the sound of a major chord from a minor chord (MU6HA-IVe-f-3)
➢ Uses major or minor chords as accompaniment to simple songs (MU6HA-IVg-h-4)

II. Background Information for Learners:

Notes that are meant to be sung or played at the same time are written
in a vertical manner like the figure on the left side. Notes in this manner
are sounded together to create harmony.

Harmony – It is made up of two or more tones of different pitches played simultaneously.

The notes/tones which are sounded together are called chords. And the
basic chord is called Triad which is composed of a root, its third and its fifth.

Triad

There are major and minor chords used in singing and playing musical
instruments. Major chords create a feeling of happiness or sound is brighter that
greatly affect the mood of a person and minor chords for a feeling of sadness,
loneliness or sound darker.

➢ Primary Chords are major chords and basically “family chords”. These are
three chords that are most likely to occur in any given key.

In the key of C, the primary chords are C major, F major and G major. The
technique used in searching the primary chord of any key signature is the mathematical
procedure of selecting the 1st, 4th and 5th notes of the scale of C major. The primary
chords are also referred to as Tonic, Sub-dominant and Dominant.
If the majority of the chords are found on the primary chords, secondary chords
are another alternative for accompaniment.

➢ Secondary Chords – are minor chords built on the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th degrees
of the scale. They are called as supertonic (ii), mediant (iii), sub-mediant (vi),
and leading tone (vii).

In the key of C major, the secondary chords are Dm, Em, Am and Bm. See the
illustration below.

Another difference between major and minor chords is the third. To determine the minor
of a major chord, the third note in the triad should be decreased or flattened with semitone. The
interval patterns of half steps and whole steps were already discussed in one of the elements
which is Melody. Below is an example of major and minor chords.

Try to distinguish the sound of major chords from minor chords. You can download the
piano apps on your cellphone’s Play Store if you do not have any instruments and play
simultaneously the notes therein. You can ask assistance from your friends who know how to
play instruments for you to determine the sounds. Or you can search them on the YouTube. Do
their sounds differ from each other?
III. Exercises/ Activities:
