II. Background Information for Learners:


Have you ever watched a concert or a choral singing in your school or in other places?
How many voices did you hear? How about a folk singer performing on stage?
✓ The many voices you hear at the same time are called textures. Also, when a
melody is accompanied by chords, the result is the interweaving of sounds which
is also called texture.

TEXTURE – in music refers to the structure of a musical composition showing how many
sounds, various layers or voices are heard at the same time. It is also called
the weaving together of melody and harmony in music.

Three Kinds of Texture:


1. Monophonic or monophony – this kind of texture has only one melody or single
melodic line which stands alone, without harmony or accompaniment. In monophonic
music, it does not matter how many performers there are, as long as they are all
singing, one and the same melodic line. This single line may be sung by one or more
persons or may be played by one or two or more instruments. The music remains
monophonic if there is only one melodic line that is sung or played.

An example of a monophonic texture is “Are You Sleeping, Lazy Juan?” sung by


a capella, humming or in unison.
2. Homophonic texture – this is made up of one melody backed up by harmonic
accompaniment (chords). For instance, pupils during a flag ceremony, singing in
unison with piano accompaniment. An orchestra could also play the National Anthem,
and it would still be homophonic; certain instruments still play the melody while the
rest of the instruments harmonize it.

3. Polyphonic texture – it is the combination of two or more melodic lines sung or


played at the same time. Polyphony also happens when singing Partner Songs,
Round Songs, Duet, Canon, and Descant (countermelody). In polyphonic texture,
each melodic line can stand alone and does not need the accompaniment of chords.

Below is an example of Round Song which can also be produced when two or more voices
or instruments imitate the same melody but begin at different times. (Imitative Polyphony)

Activity 1:

Activity 3:

Directions: Sing or play your favorite song and use any kind of texture in music you wanted to.
You can choose from among the three kinds of texture (Monophonic, Homophonic
or Polyphonic). You can send your performance output in the messenger or email of
your teacher. Follow the rubric below.
