“The Influence of Study Habits on Academic

Performance Among Accountancy Students”

The field of Accountancy demands a high level of academic discipline

and dedication from students, success in this discipline requires not only a

strong understanding of complex accounting principles but also effective

study habits. According to Tus (2020), study habits is a part of student’s

everyday life that able them to achieve better academic performance in their

studies. According to Kalita & Gayary (2022), one of the essential factors in

raising student’s level of comprehension, knowledge, and learning

effectiveness is through having a study habit. For Accountancy students,

whose coursework often involves detailed calculations, analytical reasoning,

and the application of theory to practice, the quality of their study habits can

significantly influence their academic outcomes.

Ebele and Olufu (2017) suggested that without developing a study

habits the students cannot perform and improve their academic

performance. Despite the recognized importance of study habits, many

Accountancy students struggle to develop effective learning strategies.

According to Tamayo (2023), the demanding nature of accounting courses,

combined with the pressure to achieve high grades, can lead to ineffective

study practices such as cramming, poor time management, and inadequate

understanding of the material. These challenges are particularly concerning

given the high stakes involved in Accountancy education, where academic

performance can directly impact career prospects. There is a need to

investigate how different study habits influence the academic performance

of Accountancy students, in order to identify practices that lead to better

outcomes.

Understanding the relationship between study habits and academic

performance is crucial for educators, students, and academic institutions. For

educators, insights into effective study practices can inform the development

of teaching strategies and support programs tailored to Accountancy

students. For students, adopting proven study habits can lead to improved

grades, deeper learning, and greater preparedness for professional exams

and careers in accounting. For academic institutions, enhancing student

performance through better study habits can contribute to higher passing

rates, stronger program reputations, and greater student satisfaction. This

study is particularly important in the context of Accountancy, Saranya (2024)

highlighted that study habits is a crucial indicator of academic achievement

that is a key element in student’s success.

Previous research on the impact of study habits on academic

performance has highlighted the importance of regular study schedules,

active learning techniques, and effective time management. Studies have

shown that students who engage in consistent and strategic study practices

tend to achieve higher grades and better comprehension of material.

According to Ebele and Olufu (2017), students who developed effective study

habits are likely to have better academic performance in school. However,

while much of this research is general, there is limited literature focusing

specifically on Accountancy students. Given the unique demands of

accounting courses, it is necessary to explore how specific study habits—

such as problem-solving practices, review sessions, and exam preparation

methods—affect the academic performance of Accountancy students.

The primary objective of this study is to examine the influence of study

habits on the academic performance of Accountancy students. The research

aims to identify which study habits are most effective in improving grades

and overall understanding of accounting concepts. Additionally, the study

will explore the challenges that Accountancy students face in developing and

maintaining effective study practices. By providing insights into these areas,

the study seeks to offer recommendations for students, educators, and

institutions on how to enhance academic performance through improved

study habits.
