Class Participation 9

The World War I soldier endured horror and suffering never seen before. Countries during the

war, were achieving their goals but the human toll of these policies should not be ignored. World

War I introduced new technologies like machine guns, artillery and poison gas that turned the

battlefield into a perilous and harsh environment. Soldiers confronted attacks, trench warfare and

constant fear of death. The trench conditions were disgusting with soldiers crowded in filth, and

exposed to the elements, and poor sanitation. All of these problems with the limited medical care

led to major medical conditions like Trench foot.

The soldiers’ experiences shed light on the policies adopted by nations to meet their objectives.

One significant approach involved using propaganda to sway opinion and rally support for the

war. Governments utilized channels including newspapers, posters and speeches to depict the

enemy as a threat, to security in order to justify their own actions. The propaganda instilled a

sense of pride and loyalty, in the soldiers making them believe in the righteousness and

importance of their mission.

Another strategy adopted by nations was military service. As the war prolonged and casualties

increased governments turned to enlisting men into the forces. This approach not ensured a
stream of soldiers but also emphasized the notions of responsibility and self sacrifice for ones

homeland. Many soldiers were compelled to leave behind their loved ones and homes to

participate in a conflict they didn't fully comprehend, intensifying their feelings of

disillusionment and hopelessness.

The implementation of technologies and strategies on the battlefield mirrored the directives of

powers. one example of this is “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen, it talks about the use

of poison gas and the extreme measures countries were willing to take for an upper hand. Troops

on both sides endured the horrors of gas attacks resulting in deaths and enduring physical and

mental scars for survivors. This decision to employ chemical weapons underscored a disregard

for life.

Moreover, nations’ actions during World War I showed a lack of concern, for the welfare and

security of their troops. During World War I soldiers were not viewed as assets and their lives

were often sacrificed in the pursuit of an upper hand. This was evident, in the tactics utilized in

battles like the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Verdun where soldiers were sent to fight

without consideration for their survival odds. The high number of casualties suffered by all

parties demonstrated how recklessly soldiers' lives were handled.

In summary World War I soldiers endured suffering and challenges on the battlefield. The

strategies adopted by nations during the conflict were motivated by their objectives. Came at a

heavy human price. The deployment of propaganda, conscription, new technologies and
disregard, for soldier welfare all played a part in the wars impact. It is crucial to honor these

soldiers sacrifices and reflect on the lessons learned from their ordeals to work towards an

equitable world.
