Nowadays technologies have taken over our free time and made us forget the
traditions of our country. For example, traditional sports and games are
important because they are a treasure from the past and link the past with the
present and culture with culture.
In fact traditional sports and games are not only a hobby for children, but they
tell us the history of the countries where they are played and are an important
part of every country’s culture.
Every country has its own traditions so children play in different ways. That’s
why it’s a good experience to get to know how they spend their days and their
free time.
Traditional sports and games also represent a different way to have fun. Not
just staying at home and playing with smart phones.
Moreover they improve intelligence, physical skills and teach how to work
together. They allow to get to know people one’s own age, make some new
friends, learn something new. They are also a good way to teach how to lose
and win.
By comparing traditional sports and games from our countries can we spot any
common roots?

PUPPETS – DOLLS
Equipment
Balls of different colours, a smaller one, called: spot or jack, and an
open area: beach, grass or a court. You don’t need special shoes.
Rules
The players from each team launch one of their balls at a time, trying
to get them as close as possible to the jack . To do this, the players
can also remove the balls by hitting their opponents’ ones or they can
dislodge the spot to a more favourable position for them.
Points
When all players have tossed their balls, a neutral person checks
what the closest four balls are and assigns the points. The points
required to win are: 7, 11, 13, 21.
The game is called ‘’ FOOTBALL CARDS ‘’.
It is an outdoor game and it is usually performed in yards without a set number
of players. It is played by one player at a time.
To play this game you need a piece of chalk and you must draw a line on the
pavement at a short distance from a wall. The players stand on the line and
throw their cards one at a time. The player that throws the card nearer the
wall gets all the cards on the pavement.
At the end of the game the player with more cards wins.
IL CERCHIO
A large hoop ( usually a bicycle rim) is rolled around by means of a stick, a
metal hook or an old umbrella handle. The players must keep it rolling as long as
possible while doing different tricks, such as driving their hoops between
stones.
Ruba bandiera
Players
A minimum of 10 up to a maximum of 30/40 players divided into two teams.
Equipment
The “flag” (bandiera) is generally a hanky or any piece of cloth.
Rules
Generally played outdoors: the two teams must stand on a line at a distance of
at least 10 metres from the “flag-bearer”who stands in the middle of them.
Each player of the two teams is given a number so that there will be two
players number 1, two other players number 2 and so on.
The “flag-bearer” stretches his/her arm holding the piece of cloth by one end
and letting it hang loosely. When he/she calls a number out loud, the
corresponding players from the two teams both dash for the “flag”.
The one who first takes hold of it has to run back to his/her team while the
opponent tries to reach and touch him/her. If the opponent manages to reach
the contestant, he/she scores one point. On the contrary it is the players with
the “flag” who scores one point if he/she gets back to his/her team without
being touched.
The match continues until one team has scored the highest.
COPS AND ROBBERS
Cops and robbers is a classic children's game. It is played in a large outdoor
area such as a playground. Two teams are formed, the cops and the robbers,
and just like in a game of tag, the cops chase the robbers until they catch them
all.
- Form two equal or near equal teams. One team will be the cops, and the
other team will be the robbers. If you have an odd number of people, add
extra people to the robbers.
- It is better to have more robbers than cops, instead of more cops than
robbers.
- Pick out a jail area. This can be a tree, playground equipment or any big
object.
- A big tree would make a good jail area.
- Put the cops in jail and have them count slowly to 15. During this time, the
robbers will run and scatter to get away from the cops.
- After completing the count, the cops must run to try to capture the
robbers by tagging them.
- Put each captured robber in the jail. Continue until all the robbers are
caught.
- Switch teams after all the robbers are in jail.
The name of the game is “IMPRISONING BALL” that is “Palla Prigioniera” in
Italian.
It’s a game of physical skill and strategy that can be played either outdoors in a
yard or park or indoors in a gym.
To play it you need a ball and two teams. There isn’t a fixed number of players
but at least five players for each team are needed otherwise the game is not
fun. The field is divided into two sections.
The players of the teams take it in turns to throw the ball into the opponents’
section of the field and try to hit the opponents to get prisoners.
The prisoners have to stay in a specific part of the opponents’ field, which is
the prison, and have to try to catch the ball thrown by their team mates and hit
one of the opponents to be set free.
The team that manages to catch all the players in the opposing team wins the
game.
The game is called “PEBBLES”.
It’s a game of physical skill. It is an outdoor game which is usually played by at
least two players.
To play it each player needs 5 round pebbles. The pebbles are put on the
ground, close to the players.
Firstly the players sit, take a pebble and throw it up into the air. Meanwhile
with the same hand the players have to take another pebble and throw it up,
catch the first pebble and put it aside. They have then to do the same with the
remaining pebbles.
Secondly the players have to repeat the sequence but they have to take, throw
and catch two pebbles twice and one the third time.
Thirdly they have to use three pebbles the first time and two the second.
Fourthly the players throw four pebbles the first time and one the last one.
Fifthly they have to take, throw and catch all the pebbles together.
The player that completes the game without making mistakes wins.
This game is called “SLEDGE”.
It’s a game of physical skill.
It is an outdoor game and it is usually played in the mountains but in the past,
when it snowed more frequently and heavily, it was popular in the Po Valley as
well.
To play it you need a wooden or plastic sledge. It can be played individually or in
pairs and there isn’t a set number of players.
In the mountains it consists in sledging down a slope and the first sledge to
arrive at the base of the slope wins.
In the Po Valley it was also played on iced ponds or ditches.
Nowadays as in the past the players usually get very tired because they have to
keep pulling the sledge up the slope to go on playing.
The game is called “BRISCOLA”. It’s a card game.
This game is Italian but it is considered an elaboration of a Dutch game
transmitted by sailors.
To play this game you need an Italian deck of 40 cards. This is a puzzling game
because any card can be played; that’s why it is so unpredictable.
This game is usually played by 2 players but you can also play it with 3 (by
discarding a card) or 4 players.
The target is easy: collect as many points as you can.
Before playing you have to shuffle the deck: then the dealer distributes the
cards to every player (three cards a player). The next card is placed face up
while the remaining deck is placed face down covering half of the up-turned
card. The suit showed is the Briscola (trump): all the cards of that suit can
“eat” the other cards, no matter how much their value is (ace: 11 pts, three: 10
pts, king: 4 pts, knight: 3 pts, jack: 2 pts).
Then the first player plays a card on the playing surface and the other players
must do the same proceding counter-clockwise.
Examples:
- if a player plays a card of coins, and the next player plays a card of clubs
and none of them is a trump, the player who played the “coins” takes the
cards;
- if two players play a card of the same suit (coins, clubs, cups, swords),
trumps included, the player who played the card with the highest value
takes the cards;
- if any briscola is played, the player who played it takes the cards.
To win this game, a player has to collect at least 60 points (the maximum
number of points is 120).
The game is called “SCOPA”.
It’s one of the major national games in Italy.
To play the game you need a traditional Italian deck of 40 cards. Two or four
players can play a game.
The name “scopa” means broom, and just like a broom sweeps the dust away, you
have to sweep away all the cards from the playing surface.
First of all, you must shuffle the deck. Then the dealer distributes three cards
to each player and four cards are placed face up on the playing surface. The
player at the dealer’s right begins: he can decide to play a card or to capture a
card. A capture is made by matching a card in the player’s hand to a card of the
same value on the table, or by matching a card in the player’s hand to the sum
of the values of two or more cards on the table. When a player captures all the
remaining cards on the table, this is called a “scopa”. It’s not legal placing a card
that has the ability to capture (if a 2 and a 4 are on the table and a player has
a 6, he must capture the two cards and not place the 6 on the table without
capturing). If a player has an ace, he / she collects all the cards on the table.
Calculating the score of a player is a bit difficult: the player gets a point for
each scopa, and in addition there are up to 5 points available for the following,
each worth 1 point:
- the greatest number of cards captured;
- the greatest number of cards in the suit of coins;
- the seven of coins (sette bello);
- the king of coins (re bello);
- “primera”, that is all the sevens or most of them and one/two sixes
captured.
Other points may derive from “nappola”, that is at least three consecutive
cards in the suit of coins starting from number one. Here the player gets a
point for each card in the suit of coins.
The game is called “SCALA 40”.
Scala 40 is a card game that spread after World War I, imported from
Hungary.
This game can be played by a number of players that goes from 2 to 6. To play
the game you need two decks of 52 cards with 4 jokers. After shuffling the
deck the dealer distributes 13 cards to every player. The next card is placed
face up while the remaining deck is placed face down covering half of the up-
turned card. The player on the left of the dealer will start to game. Then the
players will continue clockwise.
The players will have to perform the following actions:
- draw a card from the deck;
- try to match the cards to collect sets of 3 or more equal cards and
sequences of 3 or more cards in suit to make melds;
- lay down the melds on the table when their sum has a value of at least 40
points (this is called opening);
- discard a card when not needed and put it in the part of the deck called
“waste”.
The game ends when a player closes the game by melding all his/her cards but
one and discarding the final card.
ROMANIA
Oina
There are two teams of eleven players.
There are two halves with five minutes break. Each team hits the ball with
a bat, the other team must catch it.
When they catch the ball, they have to try to throw it to the other team
player, who is trying to run from one base (end of the court) to the other
without being hit by the ball. What he has to defend himself are his
hands. If he is hit in any other part of his body but the hands, he and his
team lose 2 points. If he manages to run forward and backward without
being hit, his team wins 2 points.
After the signal hunters try to hit the ducks. The one, that is hit, leaves the
circle and joins the hunters. The ducks can run round the circle in any direction
trying to escape the hit of the ball. When all the ducks have been hunted, the
teams change places. It is allowed for “ ducks ” to catch the ball. The player
gets additional “ life ”. The winner is the team which spends less time hitting
out all the ducks.
ADAM HAD SEVEN SONS
The game is a physical game. There is no need of any material for this game.
There must be at least 2 players. It can also be played with a crowded group.
If there is a group of players, the players bend and the first player jumps over
the bent players. After finishing the jumping over the players, the jumper
player bends at the end of the queue. And the bent player who is at the
beginning of the queue starts to jump over the bent players.
ROPE JUMPING
Rope jumping is also called in Turkey as ‘Cord’. It is always played by children.
Female children generally play the game.
A rope is needed for the game, and there must be at least 3 players.
2 of the players wear the rope on their knees as in the picture, and one of the
players tries to jump between the ropes without touching the rope. If the
player touches the rope, he/she fails.
This is a physical game. And luck is also important. No material is needed for
the game. It can be played anywhere. But there must be a flat area.
The game is played with 2 groups of players and a referee. The referee stands
and the players of a group bend in front of him like in the pictures. The other
group of players jumps over the bent players and they try to knock down the
rival players. If the bent players touch the ground they lose. And they have to
bend again. If the bent group stands still after all the rival players jump over
them, they win and they jump in the next game.
POLAND
DODGEBALL
The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them
"OUT". This may be done by:
1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball below the shoulders.
2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground.
Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything,
including the floor/ground, another ball, another player, or any other item
outside the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc).
TAG GAME
It is a playground game that involves one or more players chasing other players
in an attempt to "tag" or touch them, usually with their hands.
1. Understand the flow of the game. One person is "it," and his/her job is to
touch someone else. When you are touched by the person who is "it," you
immediately become "it." Now, it's your job to tag someone else. The game
usually continues until everyone decides to stop, or until a predetermined
number of people have become "it."
2. Decide who is "it." This person will chase the other players, trying to tag
them, until he/she tags someone. Then, the tagged person becomes "it," and the
original "it" person runs away to avoid being tagged. Many of the players will get
a turn at being "it". To quickly decide who is "it" first, just say "Who is it?" or
volunteer to do it yourself. The person should say "I am it," and everyone
should know who is "it”.
3. Choose the playing area. Set boundaries so that the "not-it" players can't
run too far away. The smaller the space, the harder it will be to avoid the
person who is "it." Pick a place that is easy to run on – grass and sand are good
surfaces.
5. Count out a head start for running. The "it" person counts out a ten-
second head start to give the "not-it" players time to run away. At the end of
ten seconds, the "it" player yells "Go!" or "Ready or not, here I come!" He/she
can then start chasing the others, trying to tag them. Everyone who is "not it"
will run away from the person who is "it" and try to avoid getting tagged. If the
person who is "it" gets close to you, try to run to the "safe zone”.
PALANT
In Poland, palant has been known since the middle ages. After the I World War,
palant was incorporated into the PE program. After the II World War a Palant
league was started in Silesia, when the final rules were settled. In 1957 the
Polish Palant Association was formed.
There are two different versions of palant. Every year, on the 3rd day of
Easter in Grabów there is the „Day of palant game”. The current king of palant
is Adam Rapacki.
Palant is an amazing Polish game and many people still play it today.
The game is called “WITCH DICTATES COLOUR”.
It is an outdoor game. The players must be at least three. You need no
equipment. Before starting the game a witch is selected among the players
through rock scissor paper.
Then the witch calls out a colour and the players must run to touch an object of
that colour. The one who doesn’t manage to find the colour and is caught by the
witch becomes the new witch and the old one becomes a player.
The game is called “MARBLES”.
It’s a game of luck. It is performed in a park. There isn’t a set number of
players but at least five are needed. To play it the players need marbles and a
track. Every player puts a marble at the starting point of the track traced on
the ground. Then one player at a time throws a marble; if the marble hits one
of the marbles in the track, the player wins it. If the marble falls into a hole
dug at the end of the track, the player wins all the marbles.
The player that collects more marbles wins the game.
Tug of war is a game of strength and physical skill. It is played outdoors and
the players should be as much as possible. The only equipment you need is a
solid and long rope where the central point is marked.
You have also to draw a line on the ground where the middle of the rope must
be.
The players are divided into two groups with the same number of people, then
they align along one of the sides of the rope, together with the others of the
same team. Each group tries to pull the rope, using all the possible strength,
because the goal is to bring the centre of the rope across the line on the
ground towards your side.
SPINNING TOP
The spinning top game is an old traditional game, usually played by children. To
play you need a spinning, a colorful toy made of can, wood or plastic.
This game can be played alone or with other people.
First you have to clear a surface. To make the top start spinning, you can use
your fingers, the forefinger and the thumb, or you can roll a string around the
top and pull it. Then check the time. If you are playing alone, you have to try to
beat your previous time. If you are playing with friends, the longest spin wins or
you can decide that the spinning top that goes out of a fixed area loses.
The game is called ‘’ BELL ‘’ (hopscotch) .
It is an outdoor game and it is usually performed in yards without a set number
of players. It is played by one player at a time. To play this game you need a
piece of chalk and a pebble and you must:
- draw ten squares on the pavement in the shape of a bell: the first two
vertically, then two horizontally, one vertically, two horizontally again, one
vertically, and the last two horizontally in a semicircle divided into two
parts;
- cast a pebble into one of the squares starting from number one;
- hop on one foot to get inside the single squares from one to ten;
- jump with two feet (one in either square) for the double squares side by
side;
- when you reach the square with the pebble inside, bend to collect it
without putting the lifted foot down in the single squares;
The player that collects the pebble in all the squares without touching the
ground with the lifted foot wins the game.
MUSICAL CHAIRS
IT'S A TRADITIONAL GAME FOR CHILDREN AND FOR ADULTS TOO AND
IT'S VERY FUNNY TO PLAY WITH FRIENDS!
Arrange some chairs, in the center of the room. The chairs (one chair less than
the number of players) are arranged facing outward with the players standing
in a circle.
Get someone (or yourself) to play a tune.
At once the players start to walk around the chairs, following the sound of the
music.
When the music stops, each player must try to find a seat. The player who is
left without a chair is eliminated from the game, then one chair is removed. The
circle repeats.
Keep repeating the instructions until there is only one person left with no
chairs to sit upon. This person will win the game.
The game is called “SLINGSHOT”.
It is an outdoor game. There isn’t a set number of players. To play this game
you need a sturdy v–shaped twig, two rubber bands, a small leather band with a
hole at each end, a pebble, and glass bottles. Each rubber band is fastened to
one end of the twig and tied into one of the holes of the leather band. To play
the game some glass bottles are placed on a line at a short distance. Then a
pebble is placed on the leather band and the rubber bands are pulled and
released. So the pebble flies into the air. If it hits a bottle, the player scores a
point.
At the end of the game the player that has more points wins.
This game is called “SKIPPING WITH A ROPE”.
It is a game of movement and it is healthy. This game is usually played in parks.
The equipment is very simple, just a skipping rope. It can be played individually
or by a group of at least three players. In the latter case a longer rope is
needed.
If there’s only one player, he/she turns and jumps the rope. If there are at
least three participants taking turns, two of them turn the rope while one or
more jump.
This game can become a sport if it is practiced individually with commitment
and perseverance.
The name of the game is “SWING”.
It is played in almost every country in the world and it is played in the open
air. To play the game all you need is a rope, an inverted u-shaped metal or
wooden (a strong branch) framework and a piece of wood or plastic as a small
chair.
It can be played by two or more players and, depending on the framework,
usually one or two players at a time can ride the swing. The riders have to sit
on the small chair and other players may push them from behind trying to
send them high into the air.
As an alternative the riders may swing stretching their legs forward when
the swing goes up and bending them when the swing comes down.
The name of the game is “FORENAMES, COUNTRIES, NATIONALITIES,
CITIES, OBJECTS, ANIMALS ….”.
To play this game you need small cards with the letters of the alphabet in a
little plastic bag, a pen and some sheets of paper. This game is usually played
indoors .
It can be played by an indefinite number of players, usually 3 to six.
A letter is chosen in turn and the players start writing words beginning with
that letter according to the agreed categories.
The winner is the one that guesses more words.
This game is called “TABLE FOOTBALL”.
It is usually played at parish youth clubs. It may be played by two or four
people. There is a table with 8 football rods that the players push, pull, and
turn to make the little plastic footballers kick the ball into the opponent’s goal.
The player or team that scores more points wins.
The game is called ‘’ WIRELESS PHONE” and it is a quiet game.
It can be performed indoors (classrooms) or outdoors (back yards, youth clubs)
by large groups of players. There is not a precise limit of participants.
The players form a circle. One of them thinks of a word and whispers it into
his/her neighbour’s ear, who in his/her turn whispers it to the player next to
him/her and so on until they arrive at the last person in the circle. The last
player then says what he has understood which isn’t usually the initial word.
To play this game no equipment is needed but only the desire to participate and
to be together with other people.
This game is called “HIDE AND SEEK”.
It is a game of strategy and of physical skill.
It is played everywhere, in a park, on a road … . It’s an outdoor game.
It doesn’t have a set number of players, but at least 3 – 4 are needed.
To play you need no equipment.
A counter is selected among the players through rock scissor paper and facing
a wall or a trunk this player has to count up to an agreed number (usually 20 or
30). The other players have to hide. Then the counter starts looking for them.
The ones who are found have to run and try to arrive at the base before the
counter. If they are caught before touching the wall or trunk, they are
eliminated. Anyway if the last player arrives at the base, all the other players
are saved.
The counter wins if he/she manages to find all the players.
If nobody is found or if the players are saved, the counter has to start
counting again.
THE FOUR CORNERS
Players: five
Rules: this is an outdoor game, or you can play it in a large room. The playing
ground must be squared and its four angles have to be marked in a clear way
(usually by means of a chalk). The players then see who’s going to be ‘IT’: this
player will stand in the middle of the playground while the other four go to one
of its corners. When the player in the middle shouts ‘via!’(go), the four players
must rapidly swap places while he/she tries to conquer one of the positions. If
he/she manages to, the player who has lost the position stands in the middle.
The game is called “BLOWGUN” (peashooter).
It is an outdoor game and it is usually played in yards without a set number of
players, but at least two are needed. It is a game of accuracy and strategy. To
play this game you need little carved wooden tubes (one for each player) and
small paper balls. A line is drawn on the pavement and the players stand on it.
Each player puts a paper ball inside the tube and blows to shoot the ball. The
player whose ball falls the furthest wins.
The name of the game is “BLIND FLY” (blind man's buff).
It is played outdoors.
Blind Fly is played in many countries around the world. It is a lively game. The
only tool needed is a bandage.
There isn’t a precise number of players and as many people as desired can play
but more than three are needed.
At the beginning of the game a player is drawn by lot to be blindfolded and
becomes the blind man's buff. So he/she must try to touch the other players,
who meanwhile can move around freely. When the blindfold player has caught all
the members, the game ends.
Some traditional games are similar in European countries, but sometimes they
are played with different tools and slightly different rules.
The same games also have national names, for example “Hide and seek“ is:
in Latvia “Paslēpes”;
in Poland “Ciuciubabka”;
in Italy “Nascondino”;
in Romania “Pititea”;
in Turkey “Saklambaç”;
Games are played differently and various tools are used depending on cultures
and geographical conditions.
The history of games dates back to the ancient past and is the result of the
interaction among peoples.
In every country they have been important as cultural and social bonding events
and have always been seen as a way to develop strategic thinking and mental
skills.
After 1990 the game loses its popularity. However, the last few
years The Romanian Federation of Oina has started an
important campaign in order to revive this sport.
