OBJECTIVES: At the end of this cycle, students will be able to:
1. Identify and recognize different punctuation marks in Spanish.
2. Develop phonemic awareness in the Spanish language.
3. Practice correct pronunciation of Spanish sounds.
4. Apply correct punctuation in writing to enhance clarity and meaning.

Content: Google Classroom will be used to post assignments/notes or relevant information that is important for the
classroom. Students will introduce themselves and rules and expectations of the class will be shared.
For example, if
the picture is of a
dog, students
should say the
sound "p" when
identifying the
word "perro."
Lesson Three: Capitalization rules
Content: The use of capital letters is one of the most controversial issues in Spanish
spelling. The Spelling of the Spanish language (2010) points out that the use of capital
letters must take into account various factors, such as the type of text being written, its context or
the intention of the writer.
Capitalization Rules: What not to capitalize:
1. First letter of every sentence 1. Nationality
2. Personal titles/titles/Nicknames 2. Languages
3. Book Titles 3. Days of the week
4. Holidays & religious festivals 4. Names of months
5. Countries 5. Composition (Movies, Books) titles
6. Introductory titles
7. Place names
8. Religions

H.O. D comments:
Capitalization in Spanish
The rules of capitalization, or el uso de mayúsculas, in Spanish are a bit different from English.
Take a look at the information below to find out when you should capitalize in Spanish!
Capitalization In Spanish, the first letter of every sentence is capitalized, as is the first
letter of all proper nouns (names of people, cities, countries, places, etc.).
mayúscula = uppercase
minúscula = lowercase
Personal Titles
Titles like señor
For example:
El señor Rodríguez canta muy bien.
When an abbreviated title is used (Sr.), it is written with an uppercase letter and a period
at the end.
When reading an abbreviated title like Sr. aloud, you pronounce it like the full word
señor
Book Titles
The first letter of the first word in titles of books, films, and works of art is generally capitalized.
Watch out! In Spanish you do not capitalize every word in a title. You only capitalize the first
word.
Los miserables
Les Misérables
El País
(Spanish Newspaper)
Revista Semana
(Colombian Magazine)
Take a look:
Hoy es viernes.
Today is Friday.
Nací en agosto.
Hablo español.
I speak Spanish.
Mauricio es mexicano.
Mauricio is Mexican.
Roberto es católico.
Robert is Catholic.
Holidays
Religious festivals and national holidays are capitalized in Spanish.
For example:
On Christmas Eve, my family eats suckling pig with rice and pigeon peas.
What not to capitalize:
Nationality: In Spanish, even though names of countries or cities are capitalized, words derived
from them – such as nationality and language are not capitalized.
Example: I am American = Soy americano
Days of the week: Names of the days of the week use lower-case letters.
Example: Today is Monday = Hoy es lunes
Unless the word comes as the first word of the sentence, we never capitalize names of ‘days of
the week’ in Spanish.
Names of months: Names of the months of the year are not capitalized either.
Example: Today is May 5th = Hoy es el cinco de mayo
Composition (Movies, Books) titles: In written Spanish, titles of movies, books, plays, etc.
capitalize only the first word and proper nouns.
Example: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone = Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal
Introductory titles: Titles (such as doctor, profesor, señor) are not capitalized in Spanish.
However, common abbreviations (like Dr. for doctor) are capitalized.
Place names: Names of rivers, lakes, mountains etc. are capitalized, but the identifier (type of
place) is not capitalized.
Example: In English we would usually say ‘I am going to see River Nile’. In Spanish, it would
become ‘Voy a ver el río Nilo’. While we capitalize ‘Nile’ or ‘Nilo’ we do not capitalize ‘River’
or ‘río‘.
Religions:
The name of most religions, their adjectives, and their adherents (proper nouns) are not
capitalized in Spanish.
Example: Christianity = el cristianismo
Christian = cristiano
Muslim = musulmán
Ordinal numbers: When an ordinal number is used after a name, it isn’t capitalized.
Example: George the eighth = George octavo.
Note that we also skip the ‘the’ in such cases while translating to Spanish.
Lesson 3:
Practice exercise:

Dejo mis bienes a mi sobrino Juan No A mi hermano Luis Tampoco Jamás
