Research shows 100% of laundered shop towels tested
contain toxic heavy metals.
How do they get there? Shop towels go back and forth from
the laundry to a variety of industries, where they could pick up
and retain heavy metals - even after laundering.
Those toxic heavy metals can migrate from the towel to your
hands to your mouth, where theyre ingested. So just what are
your workers eating? And why take the risk?
Choose WYPALL* Wipers, the safe and clean alternative to
laundered shop towels.

Case History of the Month:
Understanding the
Electrical Performance
of Category Cables

In todays electronic world, the following statement
could accurately summarize the rules for data
transmission: More data, going longer distances, at a
faster rate.
This rule makes perfect sense when you consider the
technology of today that includes products, ranging from
high-definition televisions to cell phones, on which
you can perform tasks that include watching movies
or browsing the Internet. At some point in the data
transmission system that enables these and other
technology driven products to function properly, we will
find wire and cable.
In a majority of these cable applications, Category
cable will be the product of choice.
For many users of Ethernet products, terms like
Category Cable, NEXT, Insertion Loss, and Return Loss
are terms that appear to require an electrical engineering
degree in order to understand. While an electrical
engineering background would add the ability to
comprehend these terms with great depth, this paper is
written to help the non-technical user better understand
the performance characteristics that drive their Ethernet
cable products.
A couple of terms that are often used interchangeably
are Ethernet cable and Category cable. In actuality, the
term Ethernet and Category are quite different. Generally,
Ethernet refers to a LAN (Local Area Network)
method of accessing data.

Critical Considerations
for Clean Room Conveyors
Selecting and installing a conveyor system in
your clean room can dramatically improve your
productivity. Therefore, understanding your
needs and recognizing the attributes of the con-
veyor systems you are considering is imperative.
When analyzing a clean room conveyor solu-
tion, you should consider initial cost, total cost
of ownership, maintenance needs, noise levels,
energy consumption, and flexibility.

Chamber with Real-Time Feedback
Using human researchers to observe test sub-
ject behavior during research experiments can
be both time-consuming and expensive. The
available manpower for real-time observation is
limited, and human observations are inherently
subjective. To address some of these limitations,
the Tufts Center for Regenerative and Devel-
opmental Biology has partnered with Wireless
Techniques to develop the first automated
learning and testing chamber for analyzing
behavior in small animals.

Other Valves Fight Friction,
We Designed it Out
Unlike other valves that seal with friction, Posi-ates unique
buttery valve uses an inatable seat to seal with air pressure.
Thus it requires less torque and a smaller actuator, resulting in
lower cost. Plus, the seat automatically compensates for wear,
providing longer life. Some users have reported over 6 million

NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT:
BEHIND THE SCENES
The editors of New Equipment Digest go behind the scenes
for a special Q&A session to discuss the development and
background of innovative products.
Why did Nexen decide to develop this product?
The motion control market has been expanding globally
for the past decade. Nexen wanted to participate in the
market opportunities presented by this growth. Therefore,
Nexen identified technology which offered a significant val-
ue proposition for motion control applications. In the end,
Nexen identified, developed, and applied new technologies
for the expanding motion control markets.
What makes this product significantly different
from other products?
The technology behind Nexens Roller Pinion System
(RPS) differentiates
from other linear
motion solutions
in several respects.
Most importantly, the
Nexen technology
delivers zero backlash
motion. This motion
is provided without
error accumulating
as the pinion travels.
Other differentiators
are lubeless operation,
high accuracy and
repeatability, and low
noise generation.
Any particular problems that arose during the
development process?
Like most new product development projects, the biggest
challenge in the development process was managing the
tradeoffs between product performance and product costs.
Our goal was to offer maximum performance at a reasonable
cost, and we feel the RPS technology delivers on that goal.
What was the length of time from conception
to ultimate production?
There are several products in the RPS product line, with
more in development. However, our base technology devel-
opment was a two-year process.
Did cost factors alter the final design
of this product?
The cost of the product was compared and bench-
marked against other types of linear motion control solu-
tions. As the RPS technology is unique in its value and
performance, our comparisons were measured against other
possible ways to accomplish the design goal. Throughout
development, we always remembered that design engineers
specify motion control solutions, and they have many op-
tions to accomplish that goal. Nexens approach is to be the
highest value option for those design engineers.
Who are your target markets?
There are many markets that can benefit from the RPS
technology platform. Aerospace and machine tool were
early adopters of the technology.
Any other information you may feel is pertinent?
Our customers have had extremely positive experi-
ences with the RPS technology. One customer, a major
furniture manufacturer, ran their drilling/milling machine
24/7 and needed to replace the Y-axis rack-and-pinion
drive system every two months. The laminate particle
board being processed on the machine produced a large
amount of wood dust, that when mixed with the grease of
the rack-and-pinion system, created an abrasive mixture
attracting particulateresulting in premature rack wear,
lost accuracy, and ultimately rusting the system. Due to the
frequent downtime, the furniture manufacturer needed a
second machining system to avoid downtime in the round-
the-clock manufacturing operation. After seeing information
on Nexens Roller Pinion System, the manufacturer worked
with Nexen and installed the RPS on one of their two
machines. Running with no lubrication, the RPS has been
operating for two years without a problem. Further, Nexens
RPS has not only eliminated downtime due to drive system
failure, but it has dramatically improved drill/mill accuracy
and overall process speed. By adding another RPS system
on their second machine, the manufacturer doubled their
capacity and saved money over the long term, improving
the bottom line.
What prompted ACE to develop this product? Were there new technologies,
processes, or market demands behind its introduction and development?
The KFS-VAF Volumetric Atomized Flux Applicator controls and dispenses atomized flux
material for selective soldering on demand via a user-programmable control system. ACE
designed this revolutionary new fluxing system to enhance throughput, performance, quality,
and ultimately contribute to greater flexibility of the selective soldering process. Fluxing is a
key part of selective soldering. Different types of fluxing are required for different connec-
tions, such as very fine, pinpoint drop-jet fluxing, and larger-area atomized spray fluxing. The
need to mechanically adjust traditional atomized spray fluxers during high product mix pro-
cessing slows throughput and creates headaches particularly for EMS manufacturers producing
shorter runs of multiple product types.
How does this product differentiate
from competing products?
Other atomized fluxers require a mechanical adjustment every
time the spray density needs to be changed. However, the ACE
KFS-VAF doesnt require any mechanical adjustments. The spray
volume and width are determined and set by user-programmed
control parameters. Thus, varying amounts of coverage can be
accomplished as needed on the same PCB in-processon the fly.
This makes fluxing faster, easier, more precise; cuts waste; and
enhances throughput by making the process more controllable,
efficient, and flexible.
What problems did you encounter during the development process?
Since this had not been done before, it was necessary to develop a robust unit as well as
the software to drive it and the control system to operate it. Its more than just the spray valve
itself. It also had to be able to accommodate the various flux types and chemistries currently in
use in selective soldering. The new KFS-VAF had to work well with all materials, every time.
What was the length of time from conception
to production?
The KFS-VAF has been in the process of design, engineering,
and test for more than three years.
Were cost factors critical in the final design of the product?
Not really. The benefit to the process in terms of greater efficiency, speed, and flexibility out-
weigh any higher cost of this single unit. Removing the need for occasional operator intervention
saves time and allows process engineers to work on other areas needing attention. The fluxer
will pay for itself quickly in time and personnel cost savings, as well as enhanced process quality.
Who is your target market and what advantages do you see users realizing for
choosing this product?
Our target market is anyone who is using the selective soldering process to manufacture
electronic assemblies. Selective soldering is used by all of them, large volume producers as well
as small mom-and-pop PCB assemblers. All can benefit from this technology, but those who will
appreciate it most are probably medium to low volume, high product mix shops who will have
an easier time by using a programmable fluxer, for which individual recipes for each separate
product can be stored and used at will. This will also enhance repeatability, and greater overall
quality through enhanced process control and consistency.
Additional information might include some engineering background,
customer experience, or other information our readers might enjoy.
This new programmable fluxing system is a real game-changer for selective soldering users.
It not only makes fluxing more efficient and controllable, but is ideal for use with all known
fluxes, even up to 33% solids. The high percentage of solids that the KFS-VAF can be used with
gives tremendous flexibility to the process engineer, who can now select from a wider range of
available flux chemistries to handle difficult soldering applications. The KFS-VAF fluxer can be
integrated side by side with the KFS-DJ Drop Jet Fluxer for dual technology

DECEMBER 2011
Did new technologies, manufacturing processes, or
market demands factor into the introduction
of this product?
When DE-STA-CO looks at a market, it doesnt look at how
to bring in a similar product thats faster, lighter, stronger. We
utilize a VOC process that allows us to develop a product that
addresses a need in the marketplace and puts the customer at
the center of the strategy. We develop innovative products and
focus our energies on new products and services that create
uncontested market space. With the Rite-Link, we identified the
challenges within the manufacturing environment of a few of
our key markets, medical and life sciences, and used VOC input
to identify insights for development. We used both primary
and secondary research targeting a diverse range of customers,
industry luminaries, channel partners, and partners within the
medical industry. We then applied all the insights to develop a
conveyor that addressed the specific needs of the industry.
What distinguishes the Rite-Link from
the competition?
We took a broad spectrum view of the market and looked at
where there was a manufacturing challenge that wasnt currently
being addressed. We noted there were people building their
own conveyors from chain-link, which is not very accurate or
precise in motion processes and there was not a standard solu-
tion. We designed a conveyor that would save time and money
and outperform the homemade conveyors. With the Rite-Link,
DE-STA-CO is providing customers with a conveyor that is more
accurate, quiet, and reliable than chain-link and heavy-duty
modular conveyors.
Any particular problems encountered
in the development process?
Whenever youre bringing a product to the market, there are
challenges. We were really focused, from an engineering stand-
point, on a development we call value innovation. If were
not able to offer the customer a
product with innovation that they
are willing to pay for, then its not
innovation. We needed to bring a
product with the right attributes to the market at a price that the
customer would be willing to pay for those attributes. Deter-
mining that can be a challenge, but by keeping the customers
needs in mind, we work hard to make it a reality.
How long did it take to bring the product
from concept to production?
Extensive testing goes into our product development to
ensure its functionality. So for the total product development
process (voice of customer research, development, cycle-time
testing, etc.), the Rite-Link conveyor took one year to complete.
Did cost factors change the final design
of the product, and if so, how?
We did our homework up front, so that was not a factor. Once
we developed the product, we brought in a focus group that
helped us refine the product attributes and features to the point
we were able to develop a customer value proposition from it.
What market are you going after and what benefits
will they realize from using this product?
Our primary markets are medical and life sciences. With the
Rite-Link, users will experience a conveyor that offers
superior accuracy and higher operating
speeds. Particularly important
for the medical and life
sciences industries is
precision position-
ing applications,
which cannot be
had with roller
chain conveyors.

Angled-Frame Conveyors
resist twisting; tracking is simple
These angled-frame conveyors enable elevation
changes and are designed to resist twisting. Z-
Track feature helps make tracking simple. The
AS40Z units have a 1.95-in. high rigid aluminum
frame and include Tension Release Tails, which
flip up at the push of a button to allow easy un-
der belt cleaning. They then click back into place
with all tracking adjustments retained. Reduced
torque requirements enable the use of smaller
motors, thus the conveyors fit into spaces others
cannot. Three configurations are available: The
L is a horizontal-to-inclined configuration; the R
is inclined-to-horizontal; and the Z is horizontal-
to-inclined-to-horizontal. Angles of 30, 45, and
60 deg are available as standard. The conveyors

Operational Excellence and Customer Intimacy in Real-Time
Mobile technologies are helping manufacturers innovate and manage todays challenges while setting the stage for ongoing
improvements in customer engagement, profitability and cost efficiency in the years to come.
I
magine the power of connecting all facets of the
manufacturing enterprisefrom warehouses and
production to field and, ultimately, delivery to the cus-
tomer. Imagine gaining the ability to monitor, share,
analyze, respond and act upon information and
knowledge in real-time. This scenario describes just one
aspect of how innovative mobile technology is transform-
ing manufacturing.
Its clear that mobile technology adoption is increas-
ing in both the business and personal sectors. Now more
than ever, manufacturers have an opportunity to take
advantage of these technologies to advance almost every
aspect of their businesses, says Joe Barkai, practice di-
rector for IDC Manufacturing Insights Product Lifecycle
Strategies research service.
The rise of mobile technology has forever changed
the rules of business and customer engagement across
virtually every manufacturing segment, accelerating the
speed of business operations while also fueling the de-
mand for instant, appropriate communications based on
accurate information. Companies around the globe are
rethinking their business processes to improve respon-
siveness and productivity.
In manufacturing, the need to innovate amidst the
backdrop of this larger technological revolution is con-
sidered by top industry leaders to be an imperative. This
premise differs from thinking in years past, when innova-
tion was viewed as a luxury that required the resources
of time, people and budget. Today, the reality is that in-
novation is necessary for an organizations survival.
To that end, recent IDC Manufacturing Insights re-
search shows that 75% of manufacturers currently use
or are planning to implement mobile technologies to
improve virtually every aspect of their businessfrom
inventory and distribution management to supply chain
automation, employee training, customer interaction and
access to enterprise applications. But mobile technology
isnt merely another new tool to advance automation. Its
a game-changer in differentiation among the competition.
As manufacturers grapple with simultaneous de-
mands and challenges, the same technologies that have
disrupted business as usual in other industries are now
transforming the business of manufacturing. A host of ob-
jectives are already being achieved by forward-thinking
companies. The top goal? Competitive advantage.
Unprecedented Benefits
to Manufacturing
Standardizing production processes and plant-floor
data collection and retrieval are the next evolution for mo-
bility with manufacturers, says June Ruby, manufacturing
principal at Motorola Solutions Industry Solutions Group.
Connecting customer demand from field sales teams
in real time to inventory ordering systems and produc-
tion scheduling will give manufacturers more forecasting
power than ever before. And with product quality top of
mind, manufacturers are looking for new ways to monitor
not only production processes to ensure quality specifica-
tions, but also to hold material suppliers accountable.
The ability to integrate voice, video, and data pro-
vides a pathway for a more unified approach to commu-
nications with customers and throughout the business
enterprise across functions, expertise levels and lan-
guages. When these technologies are brought together in
the manufacturing environment, their impact is powerful
and immediate, according to industry experts like Barkai
and Ruby.
Mobile technology can help manufacturers manage
simultaneous demands and address new challenges, ac-
cording to new insights from IDC Manufacturing research

and analysis. Mobile technology and the rap-
idly increasing sophistication of its enabling
communications infrastructure and array of
ubiquitous devices create nonstop, seamless,
reliable, safe, and cost-effective real-time con-
nectivity for all stakeholders in and around
manufacturing, says Barkai.
Improving Decision-Making
Wireless-enabled data collection and
reporting technologies can be embedded
throughout the manufacturing enterprise, al-
lowing everyone within the organization to
access, monitor and evaluate real-time data
upon which to make sound business deci-
sions. This capability benefits the operation in
many waysfrom faster problem identifica-
tion and resolution to mitigating risk or avert-
ing loss in a crisis.
The ability to monitor and control mul-
tiple lines or facilities and share data and best
practices across the enterprise offers opera-
tional, as well as competitive advantages. The
process of making knowledgeable, fact-based
decisions is significantly improved when the
data upon which decisions are based come
from the manufacturers own operations
rather than industry profiles or the experi-
ences of others. IDC reports 50% of employ-
ees in the consumer products industry use
mobile technology to perform inventory and
distribution management functions to strate-
gically inform decision-making and increase
competitive advantage.
Connecting with Customers
To succeed in a highly competitive market-
place, manufacturers need to form strong re-
lationships with customers and work to build
loyalty. But to accomplish that goal, compa-
nies need a deep understanding of their cus-
tomers as individuals and the ability to build
products that meet expectationsboth from a
perspective of quality and value.
Todays salesforce automation and customer
relationship management applications are pow-
ered by mobile technology, providing a wealth
of valuable, real-time data where and when its
needed mostat the point of customer engage-
ment with the ultimate goal of making the sale.
In fact, according to IDC, 45% of employees in
automotive, consumer products, chemicals,
and other discrete manufacturing industries use
mobile technology to access salesforce automa-
tion applications.
Especially now, companies need to more
accurately forecast and respond to market de-
mands. Mobile solutions can empower sales
teams to gather and analyze data from retail
point of sale for competitive intelligence, as
well as to foster more accurate and timely
demand forecasts. For instance, many con-
sumer packaged goods manufacturers work
with retailers to capture customer data to in-
crease insights, drive promotions, and ensure
product availability.
Managing People More
Effectively and Assets
More Efficiently
Workforce reductions and an aging de-
mographic are challenging the availability
and access to experienced, knowledge-based
workers. This challenge can be met and coun-
tered by leveraging mobility to standardize
and document processes, provide access to
expert information and, when required,
connect via integrated voice or video tech-
nology on a single mobile computing device.
The rise of millennial or Gen Y workers
in manufacturing and other industries is a
given, says Ruby. Whats new is the chal-
lenge to attract and leverage these young,
tech-savvy individuals. Multitaskers by nature,
Gen Y workers fully capitalize on all of the
connections made possible today via phone,
email, instant messaging and texting. They ex-
pect instant information and are comfortable
with the multifaceted, multitasking nature of
accessing it. Enterprise technology tools can
bridge the gap between personal and profes-
sional needs, and in addition, help manufac-
turers take advantage of the Gen Y employees
natural affinity for technology-enabled con-
nections and networking.
Organizations have already begun to reap
the benefits of this approach. Field-service
workforce automation has enabled more than
70% of technicians in the chemical manufac-
turing industry to expedite difficult or more ad-
vanced service activities, according to Barkai.
In addition, the same mobility tools used by
field teams to manage work orders and parts
can also streamline and document employee
training, quickly ramping employee compe-
tency and ultimately customer satisfaction.
Assets are directly connected to the bot-
tom line. If a piece of equipment fails caus-
ing production shutdown, costs can quickly
escalate to millions of dollars per hour. But
when an enterprise establishes real-time vis-
ibility to its assets, companies can respond
faster to critical issues and potentially avoid
or lessen the impact.
Whether the problem is machine failure,
a natural disaster that shuts down a plant, or
a sudden shift in consumer demand, says
Barkai, executives have the information nec-
essary to quickly locate and reallocate re-
sources and support staff as needed.
As mobile operators perform daily rounds,
they can leverage a mobile computer and
wireless connectivity to monitor and assess
performance of machinery, perform line-side
quality tests, and even complete basic main-
tenance tasks such as machine calibration.
Proper monitoring, maintenance, and man-
agement of systems and equipment are at the
core of a successful operation.
Mobile technologies can also provide a
complete and real-time view of the organiza-
tions supply and distribution network that
allows, for instance, track-and-trace of ship-
ments and commodities, according to Ruby.
Manufacturers can easily locate, track, and
better manage materials as they flow through
operationsfrom incoming goods to inven-
tory storage to work-in-process, finished
goods, and even materials in transit to ensure
cost efficiency, production continuity, and
traceability.
Ensuring Quality and
Regulatory Compliance
All manufacturers must contend with in-
dustrywide regulations such as the Clean Air
Act, consumer safety standards, and other
governing agency or internal requirements.
The need to establish a cost-effective means
of ensuring quality standards while collect-
ing the multitude of data required to support
regulatory reporting requirements is crucial.
Mobile solutions allow accurate data collec-
tion at multiple and flexible end points. They
can be wirelessly integrated into enterprise
business systems and available on demand
for more accurate and timely reporting.
Beyond data collection and reporting,
mobility tools can also aid management in
identifying patterns that may help prevent
failures or inconsistencies in quality. The
process improvement benefits of having this
real-time connectivity are unprecedented,
Barkai asserts.
The Bottom Line
Mobility and connectivity are not end
goals. Organizations must consider how they
can organize their businesses in ways that
leverage the advantages of mobile technol-
ogy and envision how the use of mobility
solutions can advance overall goals. When
looking to invest in mobile solutions, manu-
facturers should focus on the business value
of the investment. Each solution or technol-
ogy should contribute to fundamental orga-
nizational goals and provide both relevant
content and context for workers.
Dont merely look at mobile technologies
and devices to streamline current processes.
Instead, take the opportunity to build a mobility
strategy that can transform operations, driving
excellence throughout the organization, creat-
ing more loyal customers, and seizing competi-
tive advantage, says Ruby.
