CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION:
Stress is a major source of problems that students face during their university education
when they are struggling to achieve academic outcomes for their future life. Academic pressure
is one of the factors that causes students to fail. Define stress as the mental response and
action by hormonal signaling, the perception of danger triggers an automatic response system,
known as \response to fight or flee. Generally, stress refers to two things, the psychological
perception of pressure, on the hand, and the body’s response to it, on the other, which involves
multiple system, from muscle breakdown to memory. Stress demands high expectations of
oneself, which causes a feeling of tension and pressure. (Sharma, Parasar and Mahto, 2017)
(Goedert, Cuenda)
Global study
Certain tensions set us in motion and are good for us without any tension. Many say that our
lives would be boring and possibly meaningless. However, when stress undermines our
psychological and physical health, it is bad. Students are subject to different types of stressors,
such as pressure from academics with the obligation to succeed, an uncertain future and
difficulties integrating into the system. Students also face social, emotional, physical and family
problems that can affect their ability to learn and their academic performance. Too much stress
can cause physical and mental health problems, low student self-esteem, and can also affect
students’ academic performance. Some schools from different parts of Asia may not have some
access to support services like academic advising which can intensify their stress level. (Wilson,
2007) ( Rogers & Yassin, 2003)
National
National studies in the Philippines have explored the academic pressure and stress
experienced by students. One study focused on senior high school students and found that
demographic factors such as age, gender, and grade level were significantly related to
academic anxiety. A multicenter and interdisciplinary study conducted on undergraduate
students revealed that academic stressors were the main factors contributing to distress among
students. A study on high school students with single parent found a moderate level of
academic stress and highlighted that need for an enhanced stress management program.
Local study
Academic stress, a pervasive challenge, profoundly affects that well- being and academic
success of Grade 12 students at Mati National Comprehensive High School, highlighted the
critical need for interventional support mechanism to address this pressing issue. The pressure
of final exam, college application, and making the move to either the job of further education
make Grade 12 a crucial year in students’ academic career. A lack of motivation, anxiety and
fatigue are just a few of the ways that academic stress during this time can appear. Stressors
that are distinctive to Grade 12 pupils, like social pressure, competitiveness, and high academic
standards, may be exacerbated by the special environment of Mati National Comprehensive
High School.
Research Gap
For me, how I handle academic stress, I handled it because when it comes to a healthy
lifestyle, I have to sleep early, and the doctor requires me to have 8 hours of sleep. I must have
an adequate diet and I must not be overweight. Because there is another way to deal with their
stress, they say, food. We should avoid eating a lot because it make us fat, and it is bad for our
body because it will be difficult for us to move and we will become lazy. So we should have
enough proper diet and enough sleep. The effect of academic stress on my mental health is
depression and anxiety. I also can’t focus when I’m doing something, and I’m also irritable.
What makes me happy and beats my stress, what really entertains me is talking with my friends
and listening to my favorite music and travelling. That’s what makes my problems go away
because I’m happy and I temporarily forget my problems. Because of that I focused my attention
on music and friends. And when I travel, the weight I feel will disappear and that’s the only thing
that comforts me.
Social Relevance
This research is important because it shed light on the well-being of students, many of
whom are burdened by stress related to their academic performance. The knowledge of this
study can expand our understanding of the challenges faced by Grade 12 students’ at Mati
National Comprehensive High School. It also highlights the significance of understanding the
well- being and stress that these students face due to their academic pursuits and daily
struggles. It is important for us to understand the well- being of these students, as many of them
suffer from mental health issues. Studying this really gives a lot of people an idea of what’s
happening to the students’ well-being and what they have to go through because of too much
academic pressure or stress. It is known that more and more students are experiencing
hardships, and that these hardships can really destroy the students’ academic and not just that,
their well- being too.
Synthesize
Stress is a significant issue faced by students during their university education, as they
struggle to achieve academic outcomes for their future. Academic pressure is a major factor that
causes students to fail, and it can lead to physical and mental health problems, low-esteem, and
academic performance issues. National studies in the Philippines have found that demographic
factors such as age, gender, and grade level are significantly related to academic anxiety.
Grade 12 students at Mati National Comprehensive High School face unique stressors such as
social pressure, competitiveness, and high academic standards, which can exacerbate the
stress. To manage academic stress, students should prioritize a healthy lifestyle, sleep early,
and maintain a balanced diet. They should also avoid overeating, as it can lead to weight gain
and lethargy. To cope with stress, students can find solace in talking friends, listening music,
and travelling. This research is important because it sheds light on the well-being of students
and challenges they face due to their academic pursuits and daily struggles. Understanding the
well-being of these students is crucial as many suffer from mental health issues.
Research Question
How they handle their academic stress?
What are specific effects of academic stress on Grade 12 students?
How do these experiences impact their academic performance and overall well-being?
Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between Academic Stress among the Grade 12 students
in Mati National Comprehensive High School.
Theoretical Lens
This theory highlights that students in secondary and tertiary education settings face various
stressors related academic to academic demands. Academic-related stress can result in
reduced academic achievement, decreased motivation, and an increased risk of school dropout.
Young people report high levels of stress. Students in secondary and tertiary education settings
face a wide range of ongoing normative stressors, which can be defined as normal day to day
hassles such as ongoing academic demands. Accordingly, secondary/high school (defined here
as junior/lower secondary education and senior/upper secondary education) (UNESCO, 2012)
and tertiary (defined here as a post-secondary education) (UNESCO, 2012) students commonly
self-report experiencing ongoing stress relating to their education, which we refer to as
academic-related stress, such as pressure to achieve high marks and concerns about receiving
poor grades. The impact of this ongoing academic-related stress to students’ outcomes and
well-being has not been comprehensibly explored. Therefore, the current narrative review
explores the impact of academic-related stress on students’ academic performance, mental
health and well-being.
This theory focuses on how academic stress develops in high school students. The
systematic review of different highlights the impact of academic stress on high school students’
well-being and academic performance. Academic stress constitutes one of the health difficulties
of an adaptive nature in the psychological field in the academic context, the same that many
students have, who have greater academic overload or other similar factors; in which necessary
to take actions in order to minimize its effects in the short and long term (Rodriguez, A. et al.,
2020); since it routinely hinders the ability to concentrate and academic performances
(Rodriguez, I. et al., 2020). We can also define it as the product of the affectation of various
stressors, which produces a systemic imbalance with worrisome symptoms in university
students, in this case, and that require actions to solve it (Valdivieso et al., 2020). In this sense,
students can find themselves in a situation of vulnerability to mental health problems, since they
face a highly competitive environment.
Definition of terms
Academic stress: An academic pressure that every students have to experience that can
truly destroy their point of view about everything
Grade 12 students: For the purpose of this study the Grade 12 students have the most
pressure in all of the levels; they are the ones graduating and moving up to the next level of
their lives.
