TELEMANN-FANTASIA N 1
TELEMANN-FANTASIA N 1
TELEMANN-FANTASIA N 1
This Fantasy, therefore, is built as a whole according to the not unusual pattern: fast (prelude and fugue)
- slow (like a cadenza) - fast (minuet).
The initial Toccata is to be thought of as a prelude: according to Hotteterre in his 'Art de preludier',
the prelude serves to warm up the instrument and establish the tonality (in this case A major)
in a firm manner on the principal degrees of the tonality, tonic (T), dominant (D), subdominant (S)
and dominant of the dominant (DD)

Fugato realised with the technique of two alternating voices. The theme (main voice) must always be
emphasised, supporting and lengthening the notes that compose it, here highlighted with a hyphen.
After the exposition (theme in A major b. 11, in E major b. 13) there is a longer and freer part, which
presents the theme three more times: at b. 17 in D major, at b. 21 and 24 in A major.

The Adagio-Allegro that follows begins with a delightful echo effect that needs to be highlighted in an
extreme way so that it is recognisable: to achieve this, it is worth distinguishing the forte from the piano
with a brief separation. Towards the end it is extremely expressive thanks to pedals in the upper voice as
the bass rises: D#' at b 33, C#' and A#' at b 34, then E' (bb. 35-36), preceded by D#'.
