PROBLEM 1

R1=2.0 k Ω

+ 10 V
-

R2=3.0 k Ω

C = 7500 µF

a. What is the charge on the capacitor (when fully charged)?

b. How long will it take for the capacitor to be charged to 63.2% of its
maximum value?
c. What will be the voltage difference across the resistor at the time found in
part ?
d. What will be the voltage difference across the battery when the voltage
drop across the capacitor is 8V?
e. How much current is flowing through resistor R1 when the capacitor is
fully charged?

Extra Credit: What is the name of for the time specified in part b?

PROBLEM 2
A doubly charged Helium atom whose mass is 6.6 x 10-27 kg enters
perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field, |B| = 0.340 Tesla. (Doubly charged
means it has a charge equal to 2 protons)
These particles are accelerated from rest through a 2700 V potential
difference to obtain a speed of v = 5.089 x 105 m/s before they enter the
magnetic field.

a. In the picture above, show the path the particles will follow while in the
magnetic field.
b. What is the radius of curvature of the path for the particles?
c. If the strength of the magnetic field doubled, what happens to the radius
calculated in part c?
d. If the particle could make one complete circle, what is the time for it to do
so?

PROBLEM 3

I= 95 A, East

ground
West is to the left on this page, East is to the right, North is into the page X, and South is
out of the page .

PART 1: A power line carries a current of 95 A east along the tops of 8.5 m high poles.
The distance between poles is 40 m. The power line has a mass of 10 kg / m. The Earth’s
magnetic field is about 0.305 x 10-4 T directed North.
a. What is the magnitude and direction of the gravitational force on the
power line?
b. How much current would be needed to make the power line float?

PART 2: Using the same power line described in part 1.

a. What is the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field created by the
powerline at the ground 8.5 m below the powerline?

PART 3: Below is a picture of a current carrying loop of wire in a magnetic field.

Current direction is shown.
a. Draw the direction of the magnetic force on each side of the loop.
b. What is the sum of all the magnetic forces on the loop? Assume the
current is 2 Amps, the magnetic field B is 0.1 Tesla, and the loop is a
square with sides of length 0.1 m
c. Does the loop experience a net torque? If yes, indicate how the loop
rotates.

Problem 4

a) In the figure to the left , a long straight wire

is in the plane of a rectangular conducting loop.
The straight wire carries a constant current in the
direction shown in the figure. While the wire is
being moved toward the rectangle, is there an
induced current in the rectangle? If so, explain
what the direction is and how you know. If not,
explain why not.

Use the following in formation to answer questions b-d.

In the figure to the right, the uniform magnetic field with
a magnitude of 4.00 x 10-2 T is surrounded by a space that
has NO magnetic field. A rectangular loop having
resistance 0.004 ohms moves horizontally through this
region with a constant speed. The length of the vertical
wires making up that the loop are 0.1 meter. At the
instant shown in the figure the loop straddles the region
with magnetic field and the part that doesn’t. An induced
current of 0.5 A flows clockwise through the loop.

a. Is the loop moving to the right or left?

b. What is the induced emf in the loop?
c. What is the speed of the loop?
d. What is the direction and size of the magnetic force on the left vertical wire of the
loop? HINT: There is a current in the wire
