Assignment 4: Interview a small business owner

Student: Huu Tai Le

Date: 10/16/2024

The daily development of the economy and society makes people's needs increasingly
higher, so businesses in all areas of life need to constantly strive to upgrade and innovate to meet
those needs, one of the needs of people in modern society besides basic needs such as eating,
entertainment, education is beauty, more specifically nail beauty. It can be said that nail care has
become a hobby and a need of many women, or even men, and in fact, the competition between
nail salons is very fierce. With the request of this assignment, I contacted my aunt- the owner of
Nina Nails salon, located in the Mill Creek - Washington area, to better understand how this
business operates, the advantages and difficulties that it has encountered.

The salon owner's name is Hanah, she used to be a nail technician for many years
before becoming the owner of this salon. With many years of working in four different salons,
she has constantly learned and improved her skills, grasping new techniques and trends in the
nail industry. Along with how to manage costs, legal documents, employees and operations of a
nail salon, Hanah is completely confident in her own abilities. In 2019, she and her husband
decided to buy Nina Nails salon from someone else. What made Hanah decide to start her own
business was not only because of her professional ability, but also partly thanks to the support
from her husband's income. Because she guessed that her business would have potential risks
that could cause her to fail.

The strength of her nail salon is that it is located in a very convenient location, right in
a large shopping center and has few competitors. In addition, buying a salon from a previous
owner also created a big advantage when the salon already had a stable number of customers.
However, according to Hanah, the initial capital and losses she had to pay were quite large and
there was a time when it seemed like she could not continue her business. That was the cost of
remodeling the salon and especially the huge impact of the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020 and
2021, the time when she had just bought the salon. The support from her husband's income
helped her overcome that difficult time and maintain the salon until now.

After overcoming the Covid 19 pandemic, Nina Nails returned to normal operations and
it seemed that customer demand had become even stronger. In addition to the need for nail care,
many customers also requested waxing services. Hanah decided to expand her business to
include waxing to exploit the opportunities that customers brought. She also invests in improving
the quality of service by providing free drinks to customers and regularly offering promotions to
attract customers to her store. In addition, Hanah also focuses on building a team of professional
and skilled staff to serve customers in the best way. At present, the economic crisis has affected
all businesses in all fields and Nina nails is no exception. Hanah shared that the recent
unemployment and protests at Boeing have affected people's income, causing a significant
decrease in customer demand. On the other hand, the appearance of other competitors in the area
is also a threat that affects her business. Hanah's current plan is to maintain Nina nails' operations
and take good care of her loyal customers.

Hanah’s sharing about her business helped me realize that building a successful
business is a long and difficult journey. There will be good times and there will also be
challenging times for the business. What impressed me about Hanah is that she chose to do
business in an industry that she is good at and within her financial capacity, which includes the
support of people she can ask for help when needed. It is also important to hone your skills and
experience in the field of business to ensure that the owner can handle any unforeseen problems
that may arise. For example, the covid 19 pandemic that Hanah’s Salon is facing or the current
economic crisis.

I and many young people today have ideas and plans about building our own business.
The advice as well as the biggest issue that I think we should prepare first is working skills,
knowledge and experience in the business we will pursue. Next is strong enough financial
resources, including financial support from relatives who can help us when risks occur. In the
process of operating a business, the owner also constantly predicts future possibilities to make
timely plans and changes, such as analyzing competitors, customer needs or the impact of the
economy. From there, minimize losses and seize good opportunities that come to our business.
