Personal Statement

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing to express my interest in pursuing a Master's degree in Bioinformatics and

Computational Biology at the University of Minnesota. As an ambitious candidate, I am excited

about the opportunity to further my education in this field and contribute to the diverse

academic community at the University of Minnesota.

As a highly motivated individual, I have pursued my academic career with passion and

diligence. I have studied hard and earned a PhD in Orthopaedics and Traumatology from The

Chinese University of Hong Kong, an MS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Shanghai

Jiao Tong University, and a BS in Bioscience from Hunan Normal University. My education has

given me a strong foundation in biology and the skills to do research in the life sciences. I have

received awards for my academic achievements and research contributions, including

scholarships and a Best Paper Award at a conference on stem cell biology and regenerative

medicine.

Besides, I have gained extensive research experience in the field of molecular biology and

genomics. As a Senior Research Technologist at The Epigenomics Development Laboratory and

Recharge Center at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, I provide collaborative and end-to-end

epigenomic services to Mayo Clinic researchers and external investigators. Previously, I generated

targeted amplicon libraries from 10,000 human genomic DNA samples with a total of 2304

custom-designed primer pairs for next-generation sequencing by using the Advanta NGS Library

Prep Reagent Kit with the LP 192.24 integrated fluidic circuit (IFC) and the Juno system.

As far as I concerned, studying bioinformatics is an exciting and dynamic field that holds

enormous potential for solving some of the world's most pressing challenges. As the amount of

biological data being generated continues to grow exponentially, bioinformatics has emerged as a

crucial tool for making sense of this data and transforming it into valuable insights. By studying

bioinformatics, I will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles of

biology, as well as advanced computational and statistical techniques for analyzing large datasets.
This interdisciplinary approach will enable me to tackle complex problems in areas such as

medicine, genetics, and environmental science, where bioinformatics is becoming increasingly

important.

What I find particularly interesting about bioinformatics is the way in which it combines two

seemingly disparate fields – biology and computer science – into a single discipline that can have

a significant impact on people's lives. Bioinformatics has the potential to revolutionize our

understanding of diseases, and to develop new treatments and cures. The field is also fascinating

because it involves a range of different techniques and approaches, including data mining,

machine learning, and network analysis, all of which can be used to gain insights into biological

systems. Moreover, as new technologies and techniques continue to emerge, the field of

bioinformatics is constantly evolving, making it a very exciting and dynamic field to be involved in.

What sets me apart from other applicants is my unique combination of skills, experience, and

passion for bioinformatics. Besides, I believe that success in any field requires the ability to work

well with others. Throughout my research experience, I have learned the importance of humility,

seeking advice, and collaborating with colleagues. I approach every opportunity to work with

others as a chance to learn and grow, and I am always eager to contribute to a collaborative and

productive work environment.

Moreover, My passion for research is matched by my love for writing and communication. I am

committed to clear and concise communication of scientific findings and ideas, and I believe that

strong writing and communication skills are essential for success in any field. In addition to my

research experience, I have developed a strong foundation in writing and communication through

coursework in scientific writing and presentations.

As I look forward to pursuing a master's degree in bioinformatics and computational biology

from the University of Minnesota, I am excited by the opportunity to combine my passion for

biology and genomics with cutting-edge computational techniques. I am eager to learn from

world-renowned faculty and to contribute to the vibrant research community at the University of

Minnesota. I am confident that my academic background, research experience, and interpersonal

skills make me a strong candidate for the program, and I am eager to take on new challenges and

contribute to the scientific community.
