Little Bitty Kitty FINISHED SIZE 14cm/ 5in long from nose to tail

YARN Unless otherwise stated, multiple strands of yarn are used together

A - MUZZLE COLOUR - I used less than 1/2 x 50g ball Drops Flora shade 02 White

B - MUZZLE COLOUR - I used less than 1/2 x 25g ball Drops Kid-silk shade 03 Light-

C - NOSE COLOUR - I used less than 1/2 x 50g ball Drops Alpaca shade 2020 Light-

Camel Mix

D - BODY COLOUR -I used less than 1/2 x 25g ball Rico Essentials Super Kid Mohair

Loves Silk in shade 045 Caramel

E - BODY COLOUR - I used less than 1/2 x 50g ball Drops Alpaca in shade 0618 light-

beige mix

F - Tiny amount dark brown mohair (about 4 metres) for the eye sockets - I used

length Drops Kid Silk in shade 15 dark brown

NEEDLES Pair 3.5mm straight knitting needles

TENSION 17 rows and 15 stitches over 5cm with 3.5mm needles

EXTRAS Toy filling; locking type stitch markers; black or pink sewing thread and
sewing needle for nose; plus (if using*) - 12mm diameter toy eyes with plastic or
metal washer backs

*IMPORTANT: The use of small toy eyes would make this kitten NOT SUITABLE

for very young children so use the sewn eyes technique instead

Mohair yarn is not suitable for babies

Special instructions: KITTEN’S LEFT MUZZLE


W+Tk bring working yarn to the front of the work, slip next st knit- With yarn AB (2 different shades of yarn held together as one) cast
wise onto the RH needle, take working yarn to the back, slip the on 3 sts
slipped stitch back onto the LH needle, turn the knitting = W+Tk Row 1 inc) K2, kfb - 4sts
(wrap and turn knit) Rows 2 & 4 Purl
Row 3 inc) K3, kfb - 5sts

W+Tp take working yarn to the back of the work, slip next st purl- Row 5 inc) [K1, kfb] twice, k1 - 7sts

Join Muzzle and Nose Seams


Stop the knitting whilst you join the muzzle and nose seams as
follows:
RS (knitside) together match the cast-on edges from kitten’s left and
right muzzle (see Fig. 1) and back stitch to join the small seam (see
vertical dotted line Fig. 2). Turn out so right side is facing you.
With WS together, working on one side at a time, match the nose
marker with the muzzle marker (see Fig. 1) and mattress stitch to join
from markers to the nose point/ seam (see diagonal dotted line Fig. 3).

To complete the nose: embroider a length of grey mohair to define


the bottom of the nose (see Fig. 4).
Remove nose and muzzle markers.

Separate top nose from cheeks as follows:


Row 8 dec) Cast off 6 sts for Left Head Back , knit next 14sts, cast off

Neck Marker, work mattress stitch to join Neck Side Seam from jaw Marker, pick up and knit 3 stitches across to the Left Jaw Marker (at
markers/ neck markers to the split (see Fig. 5). the Left Head Side Seam); from left jaw marker pick up and knit 8 sts
Remove neck markers. evenly across Neck Cast-off Edge to Right Jaw Marker; from right jaw
Stuff all the yarn endings inside the head. marker pick up and knit 3 sts across to Right Throat Marker (see Fig. 6, A

Join Hind Leg Seam


Working on one side at time, RS together, match the Hind Leg Seam
Marker with the Hind Leg Marker and back stitch to join the seam
from the markers to the split - so joining row ends with cast-off
edge (see Figs. 7 & 8, join the dotted lines with RS together) - 18sts
Remove hind leg seam markers.

Join Rear End Seam


RS together, fold the Rear End Cast-Off Edge in half matching left
and right Hind Leg Markers and back stitch to join the Rear End
Seam along the cast-off edge from the markers to fold (see Fig. 9,
join dotted lines A to dotted line B).

Join Throat Seam


WS together, working on one side at a time, match the Front Marker
to the Cheek Marker and mattress stitch to join the cheeks to the
throat so joining seam from front/ cheek marker to Throat Marker -
you’ll have to ease the seam here to fit the throat to the cheek (see
Fig. 10, join dotted lines A to dotted line B).
Remove throat and muzzle markers.

Join Belly Seam


Flip the knitting inside out so RS together.
Match Left and Right Breast Markers together then back stitch to
join all along row ends then along the cast-off edges from breast
markers to Hind Leg Markers/ hind leg seam (see Fig. 11).

Remove hind leg marker and one of the breast markers.

Turn out to RS (see Fig 12, shows the seam as sewn).

Stuff the kitten’s head and body through the opening at the neck.

TAIL
RS facing, kitten’s head towards you, with yarn CD, beginning at kitten’s
Left (your right) Tail Marker pick up and knit 8 sts across to kitten’s Right

THROAT
With RS and belly facing you, with yarn AB, beginning at kitten’s Left
Front Marker pick up and knit 10 sts evenly across the Breast Cast-on
Edges (5 sts either side of the remaining Breast Marker from cast-on
corner to corner) (see Fig. 14, dotted line from A to B & Fig. 15 shows picked
up stitches) - 10sts
Remove breast marker.

Row 1 dec) [P2, p2tog] twice, p2 - 8sts


Row 2 dec) K3, k2tog, k to end - 7sts
Row 3-5 Beginning with a purl row work three rows stocking stitch
Row 6 dec) K2, k3tog, k2 - 5sts
Join Tail Seam
Row 7 Purl
With WS together mattress stitch the seam from the tail end cast-off
Row 8 dec) K2tog, k1, k2tog - 3sts
and along row ends to the cast-on edges.
Cut yarn, thread end through all 3 Chin Point sts and fasten off.
Stuff the tail very lightly through the cast-on edge open edge before
joining around the cast-on edges so joining to the body.

Join Chin to Nose


WS together, bring the Chin Point sts up to the Nose Seam and work
a couple of stitches to join (see Fig. 16).

Join Front to Chin


Working on one side at a time ease and mattress stitch the seam
joining the Muzzle to Throat from chin/ nose seam to Front Markers
adding more stuffing if needed before closing the second side (see
Fig. 17, join dotted lines, left seam shown as already sewn).
Remove front markers.

Join Ear Backs to Head


Bring the corner edges from the back of the ear around towards
the front of the face to create a slight concave at ear back,
whipstitch to join the edges onto the head to retain that concave
effect (see Fig. 20, following the direction of the dotted, curved lines).

Left Ear Inner


With kitten’s left back of ear facing you, with yarn BB (use the other
end of the ball so you can work with two strands), beginning at the
base of the ear pick up and knit 6 sts all along the ear’s inner-edge
row ends up to the ear peak (see Fig. 21dotted line from A to B & Fig.
22 showing stitches already picked up for Left Inner Ear)

Work short rows to shape the Left Inner Ear

Right Ear Inner


With kitten’s right back of ear facing you, with yarn BB, beginning
at the peak of the ear pick up and knit 6 sts all along the ear’s inner-
edge row ends up to the ear base.

Work short rows to shape the Right Inner Ear

To join Inner Ear to Outer Ear


Working on one inenr ear at a time, lay the inner ear to the WS of the
ear back and with yarn B neatly whip-stitch the inner ear in place
(see Figs. 23 & 24).

FORELEGS
Left Foreleg
With kitten’s left side and kitten’s back facing towards you, with yarn
CD, beginning at kitten’s left Foreleg Top Marker, pick up and knit 5
sts into the knitting at the left side of kitten’s body along to kitten’s
left Foreleg Bottom Marker (see Fig. 25, dotted line from A to B).
*Row 1 inc) Cast on 5 sts, purl to end - 10sts
Row 2 inc) Cast on 5 sts, knit to end - 15sts
Rows 3-5 Beginning with a purl row work three rows stocking stitch
Cut yarn CD, join on yarn AE, continue as follows:

Right Foreleg
With kitten’s right side and kitten’s back facing towards you,
with yarn CD, beginning at kitten’s right Foreleg Bottom
Marker, pick up and knit 5 sts into the knitting at the right
side of kitten’s body along to kitten’s right Foreleg Top Mark-
er.
Continue to work as Left Foreleg from * to **.

To join Foreleg Seam


Working on one foreleg at a time, WS together, fold leg in
half so the cast-off edges are together and the row ends
meet (see Fig. 26, joining dotted lines & Fig. 27).
Mattress stitch across the cast-off edge for Base of Paw then
along the row ends for the Inner Foreleg Seam, leave the
cast-on edges at the top of the leg open for stuffing.
Stuff the leg with yarn scraps through the cast-on edges at
the top of the leg, then carefully join around the cast-on edg-
es so joining leg to breast.
The leg seam lies on the inside of the leg.
Flatten out the paws with your fingers to give shape - and
if you wish, sew straight lines with dark coloured sewing
thread for the ‘toes’.

HIND LEG PAWS


You’ll notice there are no markers for the hind leg paw pick-ups - but-
plenty of photos so as long as you are near-ish where I’ve shown you
on the photos the hind leg paws will look perfect.

Left Hind Leg Paw


With tail facing towards you and working on “your right” side of the tail,
just in front of the tail (on the kitten’s ‘belly), with yarn CD pick up and
knit 4 sts at, or near to, the position shown (see Fig. 28 & 29).
*Row 1 inc) Cast on 4 sts, purl to end - 8sts
Row 2 inc) Cast on 4 sts, knit to end - 12sts
Rows 3-5 Beginning with a purl row work three rows stocking stitch
Cut yarn CD, join on yarn AE, continue as follows:

Continue to work as Left Hind Leg Paw from * to **.

To join Hind Leg Paw seams Stuff the paw through the cast-on edge open edge before joining
