Abstract: India plays a crucial role in agriculture and livestock. Forage is essential for the proper nutrition of livestock.
Traditionally, forages were cut using manual tools such as khurpi. However, with the advancements in technology, mechanical
instruments and machines are being used for grass cutting. The machines are operated with electricity, gasoline, diesel, and even
batteries. Recently, solar-powered grass cutters emerged as an innovative solution to tackle the issue of energy consumption in
agriculture. These machines operate similar to lawn mowers, with wheels facilitating easy movement for efficient grass cutting.
With these technological advancements, grass cutting has become more convenient and effective, enabling farmers to manage their
livestock more efficiently.
Keywords: Grass cutter, Battery operated, Energy and Forage.

I.INTRODUCTION

Livestock plays a significant role in agriculture, with India being the largest livestock owner in the world. The livestock sector
accounts for a significant portion of India's GDP and provides livelihoods for millions of people. However, forage collection for
cattle is still primarily done manually, which is time-consuming and requires significant human energy. While there are machines
available for forage harvesting, they are often heavy and expensive, making them unsuitable for small-scale farmers. The goal is to
produce a low-energy, low-cost battery-operated grass cutter that can be used by both small and large-scale farmers, reducing labor
power and time spent on work.

To achieve this goal, a field-level survey will be conducted to gather the necessary information. The machine will be designed
with locally available materials, considering factors such as strength, durability, light weight, and ease of assembly and disassembly.
This grass cutting machine will reduce labor power and time spent on work, providing greater mobility and flexibility. It will also
be affordable, making it accessible to small-scale farmers. When purchasing a grass cutting machine, it is crucial to have proper
knowledge about the factors that should be considered to ensure that you make the right choice.

Overall, the development of a low-energy, low-cost grass cutting machine will have a significant impact on the agriculture sector
in India, providing farmers with a much-needed tool to increase productivity and efficiency.

II. LITERATURE REVIEW

Khodke et al. (2018) Said that manually propelled lawn mower has a simple design with a driving wheel connected to a sizable
pulley. A belt drive connects a smaller pulley to a larger pulley, with power being transferred to the cutting blades via a pair of
bevel gears. The machine utilizes parts such as a sprocket, a lead screw, a wheel, and a control unit. It features a sickle-like
mechanism with one fixed and one movable cutter on the sickle bar. When the motor is turned on, the shaft spins, turning the gear
and cam assembly, ultimately causing the sickle bar to cut the grass or plants.

Sahu et al. (2018) said that farmers face challenges when cutting grass in their fields and explained that a grass cutter can potentially
automate this process and comes in various power types such as solar, battery, or electric. The goal is to produce a grass-cutting
machine that streamlines operations and reduces manual work. The device consists of motors, a stable frame, a blade, a switch, a
battery, and connecting cables. Its creation aims to improve efficiency and reduce labor costs for farmers.

Rajmani et al. (2019) Developed a solar-powered lawn mower was to address the increasing fuel costs and environmental concerns.
It operates similarly to traditional lawnmowers and includes a DC motor, rechargeable battery, solar panel, stainless steel blade,
and control switch. The switch on the mower's board closes the circuit, allowing current to flow to the motor and power the blade

for mowing. The battery recharges through a solar charging controller. This device offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional
mowers while reducing operational costs

Azmir et al. (2018) Explained about the prolonged exposure to hand-transmitted vibration from lawnmower machines can lead to
occupational illnesses like hand-arm vibration syndrome. The risk factors and effects of hand-arm vibration during jobsite
operations on health have not been specifically studied. Identifying the relationship between subjective and objective measurement
parameters of hand-arm vibration exposure and symptoms was a major objective of a recent study. The study found that frequently
operating with uncomfortable grips on the wrists and forearms had the most significant correlation variable, with a value of 0.431.
To ensure the health and safety of employees, the study suggests monitoring the cause and impact of hand vibrations among grass
cutters.
Dhakal (2009) Conducted a study to investigate the effects of electric grass cutters on farmers' revenue, amount of livestock, time,
and labor costs. The findings revealed that electric users had significantly higher on-farm revenue than non-electric users, primarily
from milk sales. The study found that the average livestock size among electric and non-electric clients was statistically comparable,
suggesting the recent adoption of this technology in the region. It was also discovered that using an electric grass cutter was faster,
resulting in a savings of 88 hours per month for a single individual in terms of equipment operation. Female users saved 64 hours,
while male users saved 24 hours.
Dogherty and Gale (1991) They conducted a laboratory experiment where cutting of grass stems was investigated using a single
blade at different cutting speeds ranging from 15 to 35 ms-1. The blade's rake angle was modified from 0 to 45, and blade thicknesses
of 1 to 3 mm were utilized with both blunt and sharp cutting edges. Additionally, they studied the impact of stem inclination away
from the blade across a 0 to 60 degree range, as well as the results of stem cutting arrays. The cutting blade force and energy were
measured using a piezoelectric transducer. It was found that the blade rake angle had little effect on any particular cutting.
Muhammad Waqas Jabbar et al. (2022) They built a solar-powered grass cutter to lower energy usage, labor costs, and air pollution.
The design replaced the expensive and environmentally harmful cutting iron with a microcontroller to manage the lawnmower's
operations. The device used a single DC blade motor and two DC gear motors to function. The Smart Solar Grass Cutter could
operate for over two hours after being fully charged.
Muhammad Afan Ashraf et al. (2020) Designed a hand-held grass cutting machine using locally available materials to overcome
the cost and maintenance issues of traditional grass cutting machines. The design process prioritized strength, lightweight
construction, and durability. The cutting head mechanism was designed by them to generate sufficient torque for efficient grass
cutting. The setup was built on a wooden base with a bicycle frame and wheels. The resulting portable lawn mower is suitable for
use in gardens, homes, schools, or yards.
Dalal et al. (2016) A solar-powered lawn mower was created using the basic principles of mowing. The lecture discussed the
components of the machine, including a control switch, stainless steel blade, D.C. motor, rechargeable battery, and solar panel. The
control switch closes the circuit, allowing electricity to flow to the motor and drive the blade for mowing. The battery is recharged
via the solar charging controller. The machine's performance was assessed using different types of grass.
Amrutesh et al. (2014) Described a solar grass cutter as a simple and practical machine that uses sliding blades to achieve a uniform
cut on lawns. This emphasized the importance of developing more advanced and environmentally friendly devices in every field.
Modifications to the current equipment were made to reduce costs and facilitate applications. This machine was described as capable
of cutting various types of grass for different applications. The solar grass cutter was said to be easily operated by unskilled labor
to maintain the lawn's uniform appearance.
Adarsha et al. (2022) Discussed about weeding which is crucial in promoting crop growth. The khurpi weeder and grubber weeder
were found to have the highest weeding efficiency at 99.44% and 96.8%, respectively. However, the power weeder and wheel hoe
have lower weeding effectiveness at 82.89% and 79.59%, respectively, but higher field capacities. A manually operated sprocket
weeder was found to have a weeding effectiveness of 94.5% and a field capacity of 0.032hah-1. They compared and contrasted the
modified push-and-pull cycle weeder with the wheel hoe and khurpi
Ulhe et al. (2016) Discussed about a solar grass cutter, which uses spiral roller blades to cut lawns and comes in both manual and
motorized options. The device's reel cutter has adjustable height, making it practical and easy to use. Modifications have been made
to reduce costs and facilitate applications, with the aim of reducing pollution. A remote control has been added to enable easy use
and maintenance, even for those with minimal experience. This solar grass cutter can cut various types of grass for different
applications.
Tushar et al. (2018) Explained about automated lawn mowers that use batteries as their power source were proposed as a solution
to energy loss and pollution caused by manually operated tools. This suggested the addition of a solar panel to the robot's top for
increased power efficiency. This paper was mentioned as a means of analyzing daily-use robots that use advanced technology to
mow lawns.
Sivagurunathan et al. (2017) Developed a hand-held grass cutting machine using locally available materials as a cost-effective and
low-maintenance alternative to fuel and electric-powered machines. The design process prioritized factors such as strength,
lightweight, and durability to optimize performance. This machine was powered by a 12V/1.35A rechargeable battery that drives
the DC motor at a maximum speed of 19,300 RPM, generating the necessary torque for efficient grass cutting and its foundation
consists of a wooden base with a bicycle frame and wheels attached.

III. CONCLUSION

The traditional method of grass-cutting is time- and labor-intensive. The grass cutter machine has revolutionized this process by
being time-effective and requiring only one operator. This review paper concludes that different types of grass cutters are available
and are currently in use. This study found that electrically operated grass cutters are not suitable for vast areas because they are not
portable. Meanwhile, petrol or diesel-powered grass cutters are heavy to carry and require high maintenance costs. Additionally,
the available battery-powered grass cutters are heavy and expensive. As a result, there is a need for a low-cost, easy-to-handle grass
cutter for effective livestock management.
