Drug misuse and dangerous behaviour among young people are serious difficulties in
today's society. These problems have an impact on society as a whole in addition to
endangering people's health and wellbeing. Young people's substance misuse and
dangerous behaviors must be addressed with a multi-modal strategy that includes support
networks, education, intervention, and prevention.
Drug Abuse can be broken into two - Drug and Abuse. What are drugs?
A drug is any chemical substance that when consumed causes a change in an organism`s
physiology, including its psychology, if applicable. Now what is abuse? Abuse is the
improper usage or treatment of a thing, often to unfairly or improperly gain benefit. Now
drug abuse is the use of illegal drugs or the use of prescription or over-the-counter for
purposes other than those for which they are meant to be used, or in excessive amounts.
Risky behaviors among young people who abuse drugs can manifest in various forms
and can have detrimental consequences on their health and well-being. Some common
risky behaviors are:
1. Having Unsafe Sexual Practices: Drug misuse can make people more impulsive and
weaken judgment, which can lead to young people having unsafe sex. They run the
danger of contracting HIV/AIDS and other STIs in addition to becoming pregnant
unintentionally as a result of this conduct.
2. Addiction: Drug abuse can lead to addiction, where individuals become dependent
on the substance and struggle to control their use. This can have a significant
impact on their daily life, relationships, and overall functioning.
3. Legal consequences: Using illegal drugs may have consequences under the law
that include jail time, fines, and arrests. Adolescents who participate in drug-
related criminal activity may have long-term repercussions, such as a criminal
record that may limit their future access to housing, job, and educational
possibilities
4. Physical health problems: Abuse of drugs can cause harm to the body. For
instance, using drugs like opioids can cause breathing difficulties and raise the risk
of respiratory issues. On the other hand, stimulants can put too much pressure on
the heart and circulatory system, which increases the risk of heart attacks and
strokes.
5. Suicidal thoughts: There are a few things to think about in relation to drug usage
and suicidal ideation. First, chemical imbalances in the brain caused by
medications have the potential to induce depressive and hopeless feelings.
Furthermore, co-occurring mental health conditions like anxiety or depression are
common in drug-using individuals, which can intensify suicide ideation. In
addition to impairing judgment and impulse control, drugs can increase a person's
propensity for dangerous actions, such as self-harm. Finally, drug misuse
frequently results in damaged relationships and social isolation, both of which
heighten emotions of pessimism and loneliness.
One of the key steps in addressing drug abuse is raising awareness about its
consequences. The prevention of drug abuse and risky behaviors in youth is a cornerstone
of effective intervention programs. Education campaigns in communities and schools are
essential in bringing attention to the risks associated with drug usage. These courses
ought to be thorough, including precise knowledge of1
\ drugs, their effects on the body and mind, and methods for fending against peer
pressure.
