ESSAY WRITING

1. Read a lot: This will always be helpful. In the long run, if you are a good
reader, you will never find dearth of thoughts while writing about anything.
It's always said, "A good writer is always a good reader."
Newspater, Articles, Magazines, 151 essays

2.Regularly listen to, every day, a few good TV news broadcasts - DD, BBC - this
too will help you look critically at current and social issues.

3.Write journal writing daily

Format - Parts of an essay

Part 1- Introduction

* An introduction is the entry point into any piece of writing which is why writing
a good introduction will help in grabbing teh examiner's attention.
* When you see a beautiful building, you always wonder what it would be like from
the inside, similar is the case here as the introduction is that first apperance
which lures the examiner into your essay.
* If the introduction is interesting, the examiner will then be curious to read
your whole story which will eventually lead you to good marks.

1. Gets the reader's attention

*The first thing that an introduction does is to attract the examiner's attention.
This can be done by starting with something strange or interesting which will make
the examiner want to read further or by writing an appealing quote or proberb in
the starting which will make the introduction look inviting.
*If your introduction is very basic or monotonous having things which are written
in very other essay, then the examiner would feel that your essay is not anything
more than average.

2. Provides a specific and debatable thesis statement.

*A thesis is the essence of your paper which means it is the point that you want to
prove.
*After writing the thesis, all the other prargraphs in your essay will try to
support this central idea that is presented in the thesis statement. Teachers will
see if the rest of the paragraphs are supporting your thesis sufficiently or not
and on the basis of this judgement, they will evaluate your essay.
*If you want to excel in making a connection between your thesis and the main body,
ask yourself the following questions:
-Have I clearly introduced my thesis in the intoductory paragraphs?
-Does the body of my essay support my thesis statement?
-Does my conclusion show how I have proven my thesis?

Part 2- Body

*Body paragraphs help you to prove the point that you have mentioned in your thesis
and they form a structure from the introduction to the conclusion which is
convincing and interesting enough for the examiner to believe that you have proved
your thesis sufficiently

The body paragraphs consists of the following:

Main Idea:
* There has to be a sentence which mentions the main idea of your essay. All the
other statements in the paragraph should be related to that main idea which means
they should revolve around the main idea by either providing examples or arguments
in support of the main idea.
*Also, one should keep in mind that the main idea should not be just a factual
statement which is true for everyone because in that case there will be no logic in
arguing about it. Instead, the main idea should be a deabatable point which can
have more than one dimension, so that you can use evidence and support your main
idea and convince the reader that whatever you are saying is correct.

Evidence:
-When it is mentioned that the main idea should be a debatable point, that means
you have to provide evidence in support of your idea. Different sentences can have
different types of evidences.
-Also, the type of evidence depends on the type of subject of the essay. These
evidences can include a quotation, a parapharse from sources, findings from some
studies that you have conducted or some facts.

Counter Argument:
-Your body can also have a paragraph where you mention a counterargument which will
help to make your claim even stronger
-You should make sure that the counterargument is strong because it will strengthen
your argument and show the reader that you are considering both the sides. It will
also show that you are unbiased.

Conclusion:
-A conclusion should be such that it should wrap up the entire essay. It should
show the reader that you have proven your point.
-The conclusion can either be close ended where there is no more scope of
discussion, or it can even be open ended where the reader will be left with more
ideas for additional research or some questions which were not answered in the
essay.
-The bottom line is that the conclusion along with its connection to the entire
essay, should leave a long lasting impression on the reader.

*Remember that the introduction begins general and ends specific

*The conclusion begins specific and moves to the general

Important points to remember

Write in the active voice whenever possible:

-Active voice is stronger and usually more concise than the passive voice.
-That said, some exceptions apply. If you're discussing a scientific study, "The
subjects were divided into control and experimental groups," is better than
"Researchers divided the subjects into control and experimental groups."
-This is because passive voice emphasizes the object of the action rather than the
subject. In scitenfic writing, the object is more important than the subject.

Choose concise words and phrases:

-Cut out the fluff and keep your writing succinct. Whenever possible, choose a
single word to make your point. Simple word choices are almost always better than
convoluted phrases or repetitive adjectives and adverbs.
-Instead of "The animal sleeps during the day and is active at night time," write
"The animal is nocturnal."
-Rather than "The fox ran very fast," write "The fox sprinted."
-In the sentence, "The argument is compelling and convincing," compelling and
convincing are close enough in meaning. Using one would get the point across, but
using both is repetitive.

Use punctuation to set your writing's rhythm:

-Read out loud when you revise your work to fine trune your rhythm. Include commas
to indicate brief pauses, periods for full stops. use natural pauses to give a
reader time to breathe, but don't include so much punctuation that your writing
feels choppy.
-Use punctuation strategically. A complicated sentence, like this one, with too
much, or confusing, or misplaced, punctuation is hard, for most readers, to follow.
-Aim instead for clear, easy-to-read writing.

Avoid slang, contractions, and other informal expressions:

-While academic writing needs to be clear and concise, it shouldn't be casual.
Spell out words such as "it is" instead of using contractions like "it's." Don't
use conversational words, such as "cool" or "pretty(as in "pretty interesting") -
"Savage" "epic" "chillin"
-Or I'm goona, I gotta, ain't
-For example, instead of, "I think it's pretty crazy how the artist made the
painting so detailed," write, "The artist achieves an impressive level of detail."
-Your writing still shouldn't be too casual. "I found myself questioning my
assumptions" is fine but, in most cases, "I was like wow, I didn't know what I was
talking about" is too casual.

Build your knowledge of your discipline's vocabulary

-Every subject has specific terminology. Check your textbooks for glossaries and
chapter keyword lists. You can also search online for a subject, such as
literatuer, plus "glossary" or "terminology."
-For instance, if you're writing a literary analysis, you might discuss how an
author makes a comparison. While technically correct, the word "comparison" isn't
as precise as literary terms such as "metaphor" or "smile."
-Don't use bombastic language - Learn to use simple words effectively, rather than
high-sounding ones. If correctly used, simple words can be more effective.

"Adults who use big words in order to seem intelligent are annoying, especially
those who are not intelligent."
"Small-minded speakers and writers hide behind big words."
"Intelligence is a way of thinking, not a choice of words."
-Mokokoma Mokhonoana

Revise Statistics and Facts of Important Topics

-This technique will help you to write good and meaningful essays in less time.
Providing good facts statistics in the essay will provide strength to your story.
-Read quotes of famous people, whenever you have an opportunity - Reproducing one
in the Essay/Paragraph will be impressive. But ensure to use it only at the correct
juncture. An inappropriate quote may be counter-productive.

Proofread the Essay

-Once you are finished with the writing part of your work, make sure to take time
for proofreading and editing the essay. Pay attention to coherence, logical order
of ideas, grammar, punctuation, and format.

Double check
-It is better to take a few hours or even a full day to rest your mind, and than
revise the paper with a fresh look. Having read it once or twice, you will notice
small errors and minor typos.

Transitions
-Transitions connect paragraphs to each other and to the thesis. they are used
within and between paragraphs to help the paper flow from one topic to the next.
These transitions can be one or two words("first," "next," "in addition," etc.) or
one or two sentences that bring the reader to the next main point.
Read other people's essays
-Just as the books you read subconsciously help mould your own writing style, so
reading other people's essays can help you develop and build on your own essay-
writing style. Try to read a range of other essays. Read essays on a wide variety
of subjects, not necessarily just those that you're studying; different disciplines
might apply different kinds of arguments or styles, so the wider you read, the more
possible techniqyes there are for you to pick up and use in essays of your own.
-As you read other people's essays, don't just take them at face value. Be
critical: what do you like about them? What don't you like about them? How
persuasive do you think they are? Is the argument a balanced one, with points
adequately supported with evidence? Has the writer used any techniques you've not
seen before?

Improve your typing speed

-This you need to do to ensure that you are able to complete your descriptive
section in the stipulated time frame.

Now writing Practice

-This is important pick any topic (Can be last year's topic) and start writing on
that topic within a stipulated time frame.
Final Tip-Write the first draft from start to finish without any pauses. This will
make the writing sound fluid, and you can make adjustments after that.
