Moment of a Force About a Point

The moment of F about O is defined as

The moment vector MO is perpendicular to the plane containing O and the force F.

Magnitude of MO measures the tendency of the force to cause rotation of the

body about an axis along MO .

The sense of the moment may be determined by the right-hand rule

Moment in 2D
The tendency of a force to produce rotation of a body
about some reference axis or point is called the moment of a force

Moment = Force x moment arm

=Fxd
Varignon Theorem

the moment of a force about a point is equal to the sum of the

moments of its components about the same point.
Varignon Theorem

It is usually more convenient to take the moments of components

wrt to a point and sum them rather than taking the moment of the
resultant.
Example
Rectangular Comnponents of the Moment of a Force
Example

The rectangular plate is supported

by the brackets at A and B and by a
wire CD. Knowing that the tension
in the wire is 200 N, determine the
moment about A of the force
exerted by the wire at C.

Applications
Couple and Moment of a Couple
A couple is defined as two forces having the same magnitude,
parallel lines of action, but opposite direction.

Couples have pure rotational effects on a body with no capacity to

translate the body in the vertical or horizontal direction, because
the sum of their horizontal and vertical components is zero.
Couple and Moment of a Couple
Couples can be shifted to anywhere on a plane since the moment
created by the couple is not dependent on the point where moment
arms are measured.
