Introduction

People-oriented or relations-oriented leaders are completely motivated to concentrate on

supporting and developing their subordinates, encouraging subordinates to develop relationships

among one another and emphasizing dignity, respect and camaraderie to help develop trust and

instill a focus on team performance (Russell, 2011). Leading with a people-first mindset means

that the leader's primary focus is on cultivating relationships with their workforce and offering

them support and encouragement ("Behavioral Theories of Leadership," n.d.). While people-

oriented leaders tend to be concerned about productivity, they do trust that providing a good

environment for their staff will lead to great results.

Transactional leadership in both professional business and educational settings refer to

the use of an authoritative leader setting specific parameters, guidelines, rules and expectations

then rewarding those that follow them and reach predetermined goals and objectives while

punishing those that fail to do so. Transactional leaders focus on the job with production being

more important than treatment of employees (Russell, 2011).

Russell (2011) speaks to transformational leaders as those who focus on employee care,

supporting the premise that if the person is treated well, there is a sense of importance to the

firm, and a sense of being part of the team. These types of leaders arouse admiration and loyalty

in their audience by communicating clearly and effectively, and they cultivate an environment

that fosters creativity and new ideas (Nodding, 2018). Some of the reasons transactional leaders

gain tremendous traction with their team include the intention to secure agreements on the

requirements of the job with their staff and rewarding them in exchange for satisfactorily

carrying out assignments; and staff relying on the leaders honoring their efforts through

instrumental support or assistance in conflict resolution with superiors.

Reflecting upon my own experience, I believe I can relate to the people-oriented style as I

have a strong desire to lead with a people-first mindset, where I often find that my primary focus

is on cultivating genuine and meaningful relationships with my team and going out of my way

often-times to offer them support and encouragement. I believe that with time, I can possibly

cultivate this style into transformational leadership!
