Indigenous Breed: Subdivision of an animals species that has been
domesticated by human for breeding and selection and native to the area and
uniquely adapted to the condition where they developed.

TOTAL NO. OF INDIGENOUS BREED NOW IN COUNTRY IS 197 WHICH INCLUDE


50 FOR CATTLE ,117FOR BUFFALO, 34 FOR GOAT ,44 FOR SHEEP, 7 FOR HORSE
AND PONIES ,9 FOR CAMEL,10 FOR PIG,3 FOR DONKEY,1 FOR YAK, 19 FOR
CHICKEN ,2 FOR DUCK AND 1 FOR GEESE.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIGENOUS BREED :-


 Ease of parturition.
 Draught ability which which include stamina,strength, and food
conservation ability.
 Heat tolerance.
 Draught resistance (ability to survive on diet with a very low
nutritive value).
 Good feeding and milking ability.
 Diseases Reistance .
 Easy to manage .
 Adaptation to local condition .
 Help in conservation of local gene and breed.
 Well adapted to agroclimatic condition .
 Indigenous breed can survive on poor feed and fodder resource.
 Vital for livelihood of millions of farmer and livestock keeper
throughout world .
 Keeping of indigenous breed also assit in maintain local
biodiversity and conservation of of indigenous farm animals genetic
resource .
 Indigenous Breed help in maintance of biological diversity .
 Well productive and reproductive performance of indigenous
breed.
 For small scale farmer ,keeping of indigenous livestock may be
advantageous over exotic one in that they are adapted local
condition and will give some level of production even under
adverse condition such as limited supply of feed and water ,
prevalence of pests and parasite and disease outbreak.
 Indigenous breed are well adapted to our climatic condition and
resistance to many tropical disease and can survive and produce
milk on poor feed and fodder resource .Some of these breed are
well known for their high milk and fat production {ex.Sahiwal(the
avg. milk yield 2725-3175kg)} and Gir (milk yield 2200-2800kg).

than improved breed but they usually fulfill a wide

producer but their offspring are poorly adapted to
local condition .
 In India many owners of crossbred cows cannot see
A use for mail calves so let them die .
 A local cow on the other hand may produce
bullocks are well suited for work under harsh
condition ,as well as enough milk to cover family
needs.
 The local cow needs fewer input and it is less
susceptible to disease ,draught or heat and making
it lower risk for its owner.
