short as possible.
4) The Recording Control Unit should be protected from bad weathers, and the temperature
around it should be kept at a comfortable level.
5) The Recording Control Unit should be free from excessive vibrations.
6) The Recording Control Unit should be within a compass safety distance of 2.1m.
7) The Recording Control Unit should be distant enough from electric apparatuses such as
a RADAR and radio communication devices that emit excessive electromagnetic field.
8) The maintenance operations such as backing up the data and replacing the battery of the
power supply unit should be easy enough.
The Recording Control Unit has a front door. To allow the door to open easily at anytime, the
area within 0.43m of the front door should be kept obstacle-free (see Fig.6).
Fasten the Recording Control Unit onto a bulkhead with four M8 steel bolts (φ10mm). The
bulkhead has to sustain the weight of 21kg of the Recording Control Unit (see Fig. 6).
FIG. 6: MOUNTING OUTLINE AND VICINITY CLEARANCE OF THE RECORDING CONTROL UNIT
10.4 Data Acquisition Unit: NCT-58
10.4.1 Selecting the Location
It should be recommended that the location for mounting the Data Acquisition Unit be
selected to meet the following conditions.
1) The lengths of the cables connected to the sensors should be as short as possible.
2) The length of the cable connected to the Recording Control Unit NDV-132 should not
exceed 30m.
3) The Data Acquisition Unit should be protected from bad weathers, and the temperature
around it should be kept at a comfortable level.
4) The Data Acquisition Unit should be free from excessive vibrations.
5) The Data Acquisition Unit should be within a compass safety distance of 0.3m.
6) The Data Acquisition Unit should be distant enough from electric apparatuses such as a
RADAR and radio communication devices that emit excessive electromagnetic field.
7) The maintenance and inspections should be easy enough.
8) The distance of the wire to the ground terminal should be as short as possible.
1) Wiring hole:
The Data Acquisition Unit is connected with cables from the Recording Control Unit, the
sensors and so on. The Data Acquisition Unit therefore has holes in its back and bottom for
these cables to come through (see Fig. 7).
2) Grounding terminal:
To ensure continuous and stable operations, the Data Acquisition Unit needs to be grounded
appropriately to the ship’s hull (see Fig. 7).
The Data Acquisition Unit has a cover on top. To allow the cover to open easily at anytime
for maintenance and inspections, the area within 0.43m of the top cover should be kept
obstacle-free (see Fig.7).
Fasten the Data Acquisition Unit onto a bulkhead with four M6 steel bolts (φ7.5mm). The
bulkhead has to sustain the weight of 4.0kg of the Data Acquisition Unit [4.9kg in case it
contains Analog Input Modules] (see Fig. 7).
FIG. 7: MOUNTING OUTLINE AND VICINITY CLEARANCE OF THE DATA ACQUISITION UNIT
10.5 Microphone Unit: NVT-156
10.5.1 Selecting the Location
The Microphone Unit collects conversations in the bridge, other voices through the
public addressor and the intercom, and alarms buzzers of the group panel installed in the
bridge. The locations of the microphones should be carefully selected so that they can
record vital voice communications.
Although the number of microphones needed depends on the bridge layout, in most
cases three microphones will do. The recommended locations for mounting microphones
are:
1. The overhead panel or the ceiling above the main conning station.
2. The overhead panel or the ceiling above the main route planning station i.e., the chart
table.
3. The overhead panel or the ceiling in the vicinity of the radio transceiver.
Consider the followings when selecting a location for mounting a Microphone Unit.
Microphones can collect conversations within a radius of 2.5m. Any obstacles or sources
of noise (60dB or more) should be kept out of this range.
Although the number of waterproof microphones needed depends on the wing width, in most
cases, the wings can be covered by two waterproof microphones. The following is the
recommended location for mounting waterproof microphones.
Consider the followings when selecting a location for mounting a Waterproof Microphone
Unit. Waterproof microphones can collect conversations within a radius of 2.5m. Any
obstacles or sources of noise (60dB or more) should be kept out of this range.
1) The waterproof microphone unit should be away from any ventilator or draft.
2) The waterproof microphone unit should be away from electric apparatuses such as
the RADAR, radio communication equipment, and so on that may emit an excessive
electromagnetic field.
3) The waterproof microphone unit should be free from excessive vibrations.
4) The waterproof microphone unit should be in a compass safety distance of 0.7m.
1) Wiring hole:
Any Digital Signal Converter is connected with cables from the Data Acquisition Unit and
various sensors. It therefore has wiring holes in its back and bottom for these cables to come
in through (see Fig. 11).
2) Grounding terminal:
To ensure continuous and stable operations, any Digital Signal Converter needs to be
grounded appropriately to the ship’s hull (see Fig. 11).
Any Digital Signal Converter has a cover on top. To allow the cover to open easily at
anytime for maintenance and inspections, the area within 0.43m of the top cover should be
kept obstacle-free (see Fig.11).
Fasten a Digital Signal Converter onto a bulkhead with four M6 steel bolts (φ7.5mm). The
bulkhead has to sustain the weight of 5.0kg of the Digital Signal Converter (see Fig. 11).
FIG. 11: MOUNTING OUTLINE AND VICINITY CLEARANCE OF A DIGITAL SIGNAL CONVERTER
10.8 External Alarm Unit: NCG-150
10.8.1 Selecting the Location
The External Alarm Unit is an extended alarm unit needed when the Recording Control Unit
cannot be installed in the wheelhouse. It should be installed in the bridge console panel or a
bulkhead in the wheelhouse.
The following is the recommended location for mounting the External Alarm Unit. It should
be in the wheelhouse.
Consider the followings when selecting a location for mounting the External Alarm unit.
1) In the event of an alarm going off, one, while piloting the ship, should hear the alarm
tone sounding and see the alarm lamp lighting.
2) The External Alarm Unit should be away from electric apparatuses such as the
RADAR transceiver, radio communication equipment, and so on that may emit an
excessive electromagnetic field.
3) The External Alarm Unit should be free from excessive vibrations.
The External Alarm Unit can be fastened on or in the bulkhead or console panel. When it is
placed in the bulkhead or the console panel, the surface of the panel needs to be cut out in
the shape shown in the Figure 12 in the next page. When it is fastened on the bulkhead or the
console panel, remove its flange. (see Fig.13) It has 2 wiring holes in the bottom and the
back for cables to come in through.

staff may result in a fire or an electric shock.
Ask for checking or repairs of the inside of the equipment to the Sales
Department, the nearest branch company, a branch office, a sales office, or
any agent of Japan Radio Co., Ltd.

Check the exchange term of the RCU battery and the underwater acoustic beacon that is
fixed above the capsule.
If the term of validity is approaching, contact the Sales Department, the nearest branch
company, a branch office, a sales office, or any agent of Japan Radio Co., Ltd.
