4. SPECIFICATIONS
4.1 PROTECTIVE CAPSULE UNIT (NDH-288B)
(1) Function:
The protective capsule unit is a fixed type and not a float free type. The protective
capsule unit (PCU) should record navigation data, physical status, and conversation on
the bridge, VHF communications audio, and radar image data – post-display to the
recording medium in the protective capsule.
At submerging, the underwater acoustic beacon with protective capsule, which is a
battery-powered device, transmits a pulsed acoustic signal for search operation in
water.

(2) Performance:

The recording data in the final recording medium shall be held without loss under
below the condition.
a) Shock: A half sine-wave pulse of 50 G, with a duration of 11msec
b) Penetration: A mass of 250 kg with a pin of 100mm diameter, dropped from 3m
c) Fire: A low temperature fire of 260℃ nominal for 10 h
A high temperature fire of 1100℃ nominal for 1 h
d) Deep-sea pressure and immersion: Immersion in sea water at pressure of 60 Mpa
(equivalent to a depth of 6000m)

10. MECHANICAL INSTALLATION
10.1 Protective Capsule: NDH-288A/B
10.1.1 Selecting the Location
The Protective Capsule contains the final recording medium. If the capsule should sink
into the sea, it would be retrieved by ROV (Remote Operation Vehicle) or by divers.
To ensure its continuous normal operation and also to ease its recovery and maintenance,
the capsule needs to be mounted at a suitable location and in an appropriate way. It should
be recommended that the capsule be mounted at a place that satisfies the following
conditions.

1) External open deck, e.g. compass deck


2) A place where the capsule can be appropriately grounded to the ship’s hull
3) A place where unobstructed open space can be secured in its vicinity
4) A place as close to the central line of the ship as possible
5) A place where a compass safety distance over 0.6m in radius can be secured
6) A place that allows easy recovery of the capsule, should the ship sink into the sea

10.1.2 Installing the Capsule


10.1.2.1 Mounting the Capsule
Mount the capsule with 12 mm steel bolts to the mounting bracket on the external deck.
To secure the grounding of the capsule, do not paint the contact surface of the mounting
bracket (see Fig. 1).

10.1.2.2 Fastening the Capsule

Fasten the capsule with external tooth lock washers to the mounting bracket on the
external deck. Then, apply a waterproof treatment of RTV (Room Temperature
Vulcanizing) sealing material to secure its grounding to the ship’s hull (see Fig. 2).

The procedures for fastening the Capsule are:

i. Remove the painting around the three holes in the mounting brackets of the
Protective Capsule (NDH-288A/B).
ii. Place an external tooth lock washer on each of the three holes in the mounting
brackets.
iii. Apply RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) sealants around the mounting holes.
iv. Place the Protective Capsule (NDH-288A/B) on the mounting brackets. Adjust the
capsule’s position so that its three holes coincide with those of the mounting
brackets.
v. Put steel bolts in the holes.
vi. Fasten the bolts with nuts.
10.1.2.3 Vicinity clearance of the Capsule

To ease the maintenance of the Protective Capsule and its recovery in the event of any sea
accident, make sure that its vicinity is clear and free from obstacles (see Fig. 3).

10.2 Connection Box: NQE-3149
10.2.1 Selecting the Location

The Connection Box connects the Protective Capsule and the Recording Control Unit
with a data line and a power supply line.

It should be recommended that its location should be selected to meet the following
conditions.

1) The location needs to be within 1.5m from the Protective Capsule. (The cable attached
with the Protective Capsule is 3.0m in length.)
2) The location needs to be free from excessive vibrations.

10.2.2 Mounting the Connection Box

Fix the Connection Box to handrail or the support pole provided for this box. (See
Fig.4)
The length between the Protective Capsule and the Connection Box should be within
1.5m. (See FIG. 5)

10.3 Recording Control Unit: NDV-132
10.3.1 Selecting the Location

It should be recommended that the location for mounting the Recording Control Unit
(NDV-132) be selected to meet the following conditions.
The international standards require the Recording Control Unit to be mounted in the
wheelhouse. In case it cannot be mounted in the wheelhouse, the External Alarm Unit
(option) needs to be mounted there instead.

1) The length of the cable between the Recording Control Unit and the Data Acquisition
Unit (NCT-58) should not exceed 30m.
2) The length of the cable between the Recording Control Unit and the Protective Capsule
(NDH-288A/B) should not exceed 30m.
3) The lengths of cables connected to the units installed in the wheelhouse should be as
short as possible.
4) The Recording Control Unit should be protected from bad weathers, and the temperature
around it should be kept at a comfortable level.
5) The Recording Control Unit should be free from excessive vibrations.
6) The Recording Control Unit should be within a compass safety distance of 2.1m.
7) The Recording Control Unit should be distant enough from electric apparatuses such as
a RADAR and radio communication devices that emit excessive electromagnetic field.
8) The maintenance operations such as backing up the data and replacing the battery of the
power supply unit should be easy enough.

10.3.2 Fastening the Recording Control Unit


10.3.2.1 Connecting Cables
1) Wiring hole:
The Recording Control Unit is connected with cables from the Protective Capsule, the Data
Acquisition Units, the Radar video, the Microphone Units, and so on. The Recording Control
Unit therefore has holes in its back and bottom for these cables to come through (see Fig. 6).
2) Grounding terminal:
To ensure continuous and stable operations, the Recording Control Unit needs to be
grounded to the ship’s hull (see Fig. 6)

10.3.2.2 Vicinity Clearance of the Recording Control Unit

The Recording Control Unit has a front door. To allow the door to open easily at anytime, the
area within 0.43m of the front door should be kept obstacle-free (see Fig.6).

10.3.2.3 Fastening the Recording Control Unit

Fasten the Recording Control Unit onto a bulkhead with four M8 steel bolts (φ10mm). The
bulkhead has to sustain the weight of 21kg of the Recording Control Unit (see Fig. 6).

10.4 Data Acquisition Unit: NCT-58
10.4.1 Selecting the Location

It should be recommended that the location for mounting the Data Acquisition Unit be
selected to meet the following conditions.

1) The lengths of the cables connected to the sensors should be as short as possible.
2) The length of the cable connected to the Recording Control Unit NDV-132 should not
exceed 30m.
3) The Data Acquisition Unit should be protected from bad weathers, and the temperature
around it should be kept at a comfortable level.
4) The Data Acquisition Unit should be free from excessive vibrations.
5) The Data Acquisition Unit should be within a compass safety distance of 0.3m.
6) The Data Acquisition Unit should be distant enough from electric apparatuses such as a
RADAR and radio communication devices that emit excessive electromagnetic field.
7) The maintenance and inspections should be easy enough.
8) The distance of the wire to the ground terminal should be as short as possible.

10.4.2 Mounting the Data Acquisition Unit

10.4.2.1 Connecting cables

1) Wiring hole:
The Data Acquisition Unit is connected with cables from the Recording Control Unit, the
sensors and so on. The Data Acquisition Unit therefore has holes in its back and bottom for
these cables to come through (see Fig. 7).
2) Grounding terminal:
To ensure continuous and stable operations, the Data Acquisition Unit needs to be grounded
appropriately to the ship’s hull (see Fig. 7).

10.4.2.2. Vicinity Clearance of the Data Acquisition Unit

The Data Acquisition Unit has a cover on top. To allow the cover to open easily at anytime
for maintenance and inspections, the area within 0.43m of the top cover should be kept
obstacle-free (see Fig.7).

10.4.2.3 Fastening the Data Acquisition Unit

Fasten the Data Acquisition Unit onto a bulkhead with four M6 steel bolts (φ7.5mm). The
bulkhead has to sustain the weight of 4.0kg of the Data Acquisition Unit [4.9kg in case it
contains Analog Input Modules] (see Fig. 7).

10.5 Microphone Unit: NVT-156
10.5.1 Selecting the Location

The Microphone Unit collects conversations in the bridge, other voices through the
public addressor and the intercom, and alarms buzzers of the group panel installed in the
bridge. The locations of the microphones should be carefully selected so that they can
record vital voice communications.

10.5.1.1 Recommended Location

Although the number of microphones needed depends on the bridge layout, in most
cases three microphones will do. The recommended locations for mounting microphones
are:

1. The overhead panel or the ceiling above the main conning station.
2. The overhead panel or the ceiling above the main route planning station i.e., the chart
table.
3. The overhead panel or the ceiling in the vicinity of the radio transceiver.

10.5.1.2 Notes on selection

Consider the followings when selecting a location for mounting a Microphone Unit.
Microphones can collect conversations within a radius of 2.5m. Any obstacles or sources
of noise (60dB or more) should be kept out of this range.

1. The microphone unit should be away from any ventilator or draft.


2. The microphone unit should be away from electric apparatuses such as the RADAR,
radio communication equipment, and so on that may emit an excessive
electromagnetic field.
3. The microphone unit should not be exposed to excessive vibration.
4. The microphone unit should be in a compass safety distance of 0.8m.

10.5.2 Fastening a Microphone Unit


A Microphone Unit can be mounted in or on the ceiling, a bulkhead, or a console panel.
When mounting it in a console panel, cut out the panel surface in the shape as shown in
the figure 8 in the next page. Or when mounting it on the surface, remove the flange
from the Microphone Unit. (see Fig. 9)
Any Microphone Unit has 2 wiring holes.
It has a label for the unit number on it. Confirm the location of the label and make sure
that the unit number on the label is equal to what is written in the instruction drawing.

10.6 Waterproof Microphone Unit: NVT-157
10.6.1 Selection of mounting location
Waterproof Microphone Units collect conversations about controlling the ship and other
voices through the public addressor in the wing. The locations of Waterproof Microphone
Units should be carefully selected so that they can collect vital voice communications. The
selected locations should meet the following conditions.

10.6.1.1 Recommended Location

Although the number of waterproof microphones needed depends on the wing width, in most
cases, the wings can be covered by two waterproof microphones. The following is the
recommended location for mounting waterproof microphones.

1) The overhead panel near the talkback equipment.

10.6.1.2 Note on selection

Consider the followings when selecting a location for mounting a Waterproof Microphone
Unit. Waterproof microphones can collect conversations within a radius of 2.5m. Any
obstacles or sources of noise (60dB or more) should be kept out of this range.

1) The waterproof microphone unit should be away from any ventilator or draft.
2) The waterproof microphone unit should be away from electric apparatuses such as
the RADAR, radio communication equipment, and so on that may emit an excessive
electromagnetic field.
3) The waterproof microphone unit should be free from excessive vibrations.
4) The waterproof microphone unit should be in a compass safety distance of 0.7m.

10.6.2 Fastening a Waterproof Microphone Unit


Mount a Waterproof Microphone Unit on a bulkhead in a wing. The unit has 2 holes
(φ10mm) on its sides. Insert M8 steel bolts in them and fasten the unit with them.
It has a label for the unit number on it. Confirm the location of the label and make sure
that the unit number on the label is equal to what is written in the instruction drawing
(see Fig. 10).

10.7 Digital Signal Converter: NCT-57
10.7.1 Selecting the Location
The location of a Digital Signal Converter should meet the following conditions.
1) The length of the cable to each sensor should be as sort as possible.
2) The Digital Signal Converter should be protected from bad weathers, and the
temperature around it can be kept at an appropriate level.
3) The Digital Signal Converter should be free from excessive vibrations.
4) The compass safety distance of 0.3m can be secured.
5) The Digital Signal Converter should be away from electric apparatuses such as the
RADAR, radio communication equipment, and so on that may emit an excessive
electromagnetic field.
6) The maintenance and inspections should be easy enough.
7) The grounding wire to the ship’s hull should be as short as possible.

10.7.2 Mounting a Digital Signal Converter

10.7.2.1 Connecting cables

1) Wiring hole:
Any Digital Signal Converter is connected with cables from the Data Acquisition Unit and
various sensors. It therefore has wiring holes in its back and bottom for these cables to come
in through (see Fig. 11).
2) Grounding terminal:
To ensure continuous and stable operations, any Digital Signal Converter needs to be
grounded appropriately to the ship’s hull (see Fig. 11).

10.7.2.2 Vicinity Clearance of a Digital Signal Converter

Any Digital Signal Converter has a cover on top. To allow the cover to open easily at
anytime for maintenance and inspections, the area within 0.43m of the top cover should be
kept obstacle-free (see Fig.11).

10.7.2.3 Fastening a Digital Signal Converter

Fasten a Digital Signal Converter onto a bulkhead with four M6 steel bolts (φ7.5mm). The
bulkhead has to sustain the weight of 5.0kg of the Digital Signal Converter (see Fig. 11).

10.8 External Alarm Unit: NCG-150
10.8.1 Selecting the Location
The External Alarm Unit is an extended alarm unit needed when the Recording Control Unit
cannot be installed in the wheelhouse. It should be installed in the bridge console panel or a
bulkhead in the wheelhouse.

10.8.1.1 Recommended Location

The following is the recommended location for mounting the External Alarm Unit. It should
be in the wheelhouse.

1) The bridge console panel


2) The panel in the back of the wheelhouse

10.8.1.2 Note on selection

Consider the followings when selecting a location for mounting the External Alarm unit.

1) In the event of an alarm going off, one, while piloting the ship, should hear the alarm
tone sounding and see the alarm lamp lighting.
2) The External Alarm Unit should be away from electric apparatuses such as the
RADAR transceiver, radio communication equipment, and so on that may emit an
excessive electromagnetic field.
3) The External Alarm Unit should be free from excessive vibrations.

10.8.2 Fastening the External Alarm Unit

The External Alarm Unit can be fastened on or in the bulkhead or console panel. When it is
placed in the bulkhead or the console panel, the surface of the panel needs to be cut out in
the shape shown in the Figure 12 in the next page. When it is fastened on the bulkhead or the
console panel, remove its flange. (see Fig.13) It has 2 wiring holes in the bottom and the
back for cables to come in through.

Preface

Thank you for buying JRC JCY-1700 Voyage Data Recorder (VDR).

This equipment is intended to serve the purpose of enabling the detection of the causes of marine
accidents and the prevention of their recurrence in the future. The equipment records data, as
required by the International Standard, on the navigation and the hull of the marine vessel
where it is installed.

• To ensure that your VDR provides optimum satisfaction and service, please read this manual
carefully before attempting to operate the JCY-1700.

• We recommend that you carefully store the manual for future reference.

• If you have any problems using this product, this manual will surely help you.

In order to detect of the causes of marine accidents, the VDR equipment records hull
information and navigation information.
If an accident occurs, you are in duty bound to store the record data at the time.

When an accident occurs, please store the record data according to the procedure described in
1.4.4: Actions at the time of an accident occurrence. Therefore to ensure your operation, we
recommend that you read the procedure carefully.

VDR erases old data that passed for more than 12 hours and overwrites
ATTENTION
new data.
Therefore if you miss the suitable operation when an accident occurs, the
record data at the time is erased automatically after 12 hours.

Precautions Before Operation

Never use to short-circuit between the + and – pins, non-specified applications,


disassemble, modify, destroy, into fire, heat, and after the expiry date.
Above conditions cause leakage, heat generation, fire, explosion, destruction, or
heat injury.

The Power Supply Unit (NBL-313) of this equipment incorporates a battery.


The battery contains dilute sulfuric acid. When the liquid leakage of the battery
had a direct contact with your clothes or skin, wash it off with clean water. When
the liquid is entered in your eye, wash the eye with clean water immediately and
seek a doctor’s advice.

1. Operation

1.1 Outline of the Equipment

This equipment is intended to serve the purpose of enabling the detection of the causes of marine
accidents and the prevention of their recurrence in the future. The equipment records data, as
required by the International Standard, on the navigation and the hull of the marine vessel
where it is installed.

1.2 Configuration

The standard configuration of the equipment is tabulated in Table 1.

1.3 Starting and Stopping the System

1.3.1 Starting the System

ATTENTION To operate the Recording Control Unit, the front door has to be unlocked and
opened. To operate the Data Acquisition Unit, the top cover has to be
unlocked and opened.

y To start the equipment, follow the procedures described below.

1. Starting the Recording Control Unit


1) Unlock the front door with the key and open it.
2) Make sure that the voltage indicated by the input-voltage-range switch on the Power
Supply Unit equals to the power supply voltage. If that is not, switch the voltage range so
that it coincides with the power voltage.
3) Turn on the Power Supply Unit.
4) Then the POWER LEDs on the front door and the Power Supply Unit light up.
5) The BATTERY READY LED on the Power Supply Unit lights up.
6) The PC CARD LED on the Operation Panel Board lights up.
7) The CAPSULE ERROR LED on the Operation Panel Board blinks for a few seconds. And
then the RECORDING LEDs on the front door and Operation Panel Board light up.

2. Starting the Data Acquisition Unit


1) Unlock the top cover with the key. There are two keyholes at the top and at the bottom.
2) Undo the four screws and open the top cover.
3) Turn on the Data Acquisition Unit. (There is no need to switch the DAU’s input voltage, as
it changes automatically.)
4) Then the RUN LED on the Data Control Board lights up.
5) The LEDs indicating the status (OK/NG) of ports on the Data Control Board light up.

3. Start the Protective Capsule Unit


The Power Supply Unit in the Recording Control Unit supplies power to the Protective
Capsule Unit. When the Power Supply Unit in the Recording Control Unit is turned on, the
Protective Capsule Unit is activated simultaneously.

4. Starting the Microphone Unit


The Audio Recording Board in the Recording Control Unit supplies power to the Microphone
Unit. When the Power Supply Unit in the Recording Control Unit is turned on, the
Microphone Unit is activated simultaneously.

5. Checking the System Operation


When the Recording Control Unit, the Data Acquisition Unit, the Protective Capsule Unit,
and the Microphone Unit are simultaneously on, and when they operate normally, LEDs on
the External Operation Board, the Operation Panel Board, the Power Supply Unit, and the
Data Acquisition Unit display as follows.

1.3.2 Stopping the System

y To stop the equipment, follow the procedures described below.

ATTENTION To operate the Recording Control Unit, the front door has to be unlocked and
opened. To operate the Data Acquisition Unit, the top cover has to be
unlocked and opened.

ATTENTION Do not turn off the breaker of the power distribution board while the
system is active. Otherwise, the system will be battery-operated by the
Power Supply Unit.

ATTENTION Before turning off the Recording Control Unit, be sure to stop recording data
to the PC CARD by pressing the BACKUP STOP SWITCH on the Operation
Panel Board. Otherwise, data may not be recorded to the PC CARD.

1. Stopping the Recording Control Unit

1) Unlock the front door with the key and open it.
2) Be sure to stop recording data to the PC CARD by pressing the BACKUP STOP SWITCH
on the Operation Panel Board.
y Make sure that the PC CARD LED on the Operation Panel Board is off.
y Be aware that if the Power Supply is turned off while the PC CARD LED is on, data
may not be recorded to the PC CARD.
3) Turn off the Power SWITCH of the POWER Supply Unit.
4) Then all the LEDs turn off.

2. Stopping the Data Acquisition Unit

1) Unlock the top cover with the key. Undo the four screws and open the top cover.
2) Turn off the Power SUPPLY SWITCH of the Data Acquisition Unit.
y All the LEDs on the Data Control Board in the Data Acquisition Unit turn off.

3. Stopping the Protective Capsule Unit

If the Power Supply Unit in the Recording Control Unit is turned off, the Protective
Capsule Unit is also turned off.

4. Stopping the Microphone Unit

If the Power Supply Unit in the Recording Control Unit is turned off, the Microphone Unit
is also turned off.

1.4 Operational Description

y In this section operational basics are explained.


y Basic operations can be performed on the Operation Panel Board of the Recording Control Unit.
(To use the Recording Control Unit, the front door has to be unlocked and opened.)

1.4.1 To Stop Recording Data onto the Protective Capsule Unit

Do not stop recording data onto the Protective Capsule Unit unless any of the
ATTENTION following conditions is present.
y While the vessel is mooring in a port for maintenance
y When the vessel is laid up
y When the vessel became impossible to continue a voyage by a marine
accident

1) Press the REC STOP SWITCH on the Operation Panel Board.


2) The RECORDING LED on the Operation Panel Board blinks.
3) The RECORDING LED on the External Operation Board blinks.
4) After about a minute, the two blinking LEDs turn off and the recording of the data onto
the Protective Capsule Unit stops.

1.4.2 To Restart Recording Data onto the Protective Capsule Unit

ATTENTION Once recording is halted while in port or dock, make sure to restart
recording when leaving the port. Otherwise, data will not be recorded even if
an accident should occur.

1) Press the RESTART SWITCH on the Operation Panel Board.


2) The RECORDING LED on the Operation Panel Board lights up.
3) The RECORDING LED on the External Operation Board lights, and the recording of the
data onto the Protective capsule Unit starts.
1.4.3 Backing Up the Data of the PC CARD

1) Make sure that the PC CARD LED on the Operation Panel Board is on.
2) Press the BACKUP STOP SWITCH on the Operation Panel Board.
3) The PC CARD LED on the Operation Panel Board blinks for about 5 seconds.
4) Make sure that the PC CARD LED on the Operation Panel Board turns off. And press
the PC CARD EJECT BUTTON.
5) Take out the PC CARD. Insert it into a PC that has a PCMCIA slot and copy from it into
the PC.
6) After it has been copied, insert the PC CARD into the PCMCIA slot on the Main Control
Board. (Be sure that the PC CARD JRC-label side is pointing right.)
7) Make sure that the PC CARD LED lights up.

ATTENTION When the PC CARD LED is kept turned off for 10 minutes or more, the
MEDIA ERROR LED blinks and the ALARM BUZZER sounds. If a PC CARD is
inserted into the PCMCIA slot in the Main Control Board, the ALARM
BUZZER stops.

ATTENTION If the backup of a PC CARD is likely to be made frequently, another PC


CARD should be ready just in case.

1.4.4 Actions at the time of an accident occurrence (Guidelines)

When a marine accident occurs, it is necessary to store the record data of hull
information and navigation information at that time.
This section shows about guidelines of the storing data.

In this guideline, the solution is defined with the size of influence on the voyage by an
accident. Finally it is based on judgment of a captain.
After sufficient check of an accident situation, store data.
The authority requires the submission of the storing data, so please contact the Sales
Department of Japan Radio Co., Ltd. about how to transfer.

1.4.5 Stopping the Audible Alarm on the External Operation Board

1) POWER LED:
Lights when the Recording Control Unit is in normal operation
with the power supplied from outside.
It blinks when there is a blackout while in operation. If the
blackout continues, it turns off in 2 hours. (automatic shutdown)
2) RECORDING LED:
Lights when the output data from the Recording Control Unit is
recorded onto the Protective Capsule Unit.
3) ERROR LED:
Blinks when an error(s) is (are) detected in the VDR. Pressing
the ALARM ACK SWITCH switches it from blinking to lighting.
It turns off when all the errors detected are restored to normal.
4) DIMMER VOLUME:
The brightness control knob for LEDs on the External Operation
Board. At its lowest level, LEDs still exert light.

Sounds when an error is detected in the VDR. It can be stopped
by pressing the ALARM ACK SWITCH.

1.5.2.2 How to operate the External Operation Board

1. If an error is detected:
1) The ALARM BUZZER sounds if an error is detected in the VDR.
2) The ERROR LED blinks.
3) Press the ALARM ACK SWITCH until the ALARM BUZZER stops.
4) Unlock the front door with the key and open it.
5) Confirm that the ERROR LED on the Operation Panel Board is on.
6) Follow the procedures described in 3.3: Trouble Shooting.

2. If there is a blackout:
1) The ALARM BUZZER sounds if any power failure is detected while in operation.
2) Both the POWER LED and ERROR LED blink.
3) Press the ALARM ACK SWITCH. However, during blackout, unless the ALARM
ACK SWITCH is turned on within 2 minutes, the ALARM BUZZER stops
automatically.
4) At the time of power failure, only the voices from the Microphone Unit are
recorded. The other data are not recorded.
5) If the power failure continues for 2 hours, the Power Supply Unit in the Recording
Control Unit automatically cuts off the power output.
6) If the power failure detected is wrong, follow the procedures described in 3.3:
Trouble Shooting.

1) To adjust the brightness of the LEDs on the External Operation Board, turn the
DIMMER VOLUME knob.
2) Turning it clockwise heightens their brightness, while turning it anti-clockwise
lowers it.

Protective Capsule Unit, and the Microphone Unit.
4) POWER LED:
Lights when the AC power is supplied from outside. It turns off when
the power is supplied by the standby battery at the time of blackout.
5) BATTERY VOLTAGE TEST TERMINAL:
Used to measure the voltage of the battery using a tester. The charged
voltage can be monitored when the AC power is supplied from outside.
To monitor the battery voltage, be sure that the POWER SWITCH is off.
6) BLACKOUT TEST SWITCH:
Used to test the blackout functions. When it is held down, the AC power
from outside is shut out. When it is released, the power is restored.
7) POWER SOURCE (Right half of the Power Supply Unit):
Includes the AC/DC power source, the DC/DC power source, and the
battery charge control.
8) FAN (2 sets: Right side of the Power Supply Unit):
Used to cool down the AC/DC power source. (Its rpm can be monitored)
9) BATTERY READY LED:
Lights up when the blackout battery is ready.
10) BATTERY OP. LED:
Lights up when the blackout battery is in operation.
11) FAN ABN. LED:
Lights up when either of the two fans stops operation.
12) INPUT VOLTAGE RANGE SWITCH:
Used to select the level of the voltage of the power source supplied to the
Recording Control Unit.

1.5.3.2 How to operate the Power Supply Unit

1. Starting the power source:


1) Make sure that the voltage level of the power to be supplied and the level
indicated by the INPUT VOLTAGE RANGE SWITCH are equal. If they are not,
turn the switch so that both levels match.

ATTENTION When turning the INPUT VOLTAGE RANGE SWITCH, make sure that the
POWER SWITCH is off. If the POWER SWITCH is on, do not turn the INPUT
VOLTAGE RANGE SWITCH.

2) Turn on the POWER SWITCH.


3) Then the POWER LED and BATTERY READY LED light up.

2. Stopping the power source:


1) Before turning off the power source, press the BACKUP STOP SWITCH and stop
the backup of PC CARD.

ATTENTION Before turning the power source, be sure that the PC CARD LED on the
Operation Panel Board is off. Turning off the POWER SWITCH while the PC
CARD LED is on may result in the physical damage to the PC CARD. Make
sure to stop backup by pressing the BACKUP STOP SWITCH.

2) Press the BACKUP STOP SWITCH on the Operation Panel Board.


3) Make sure that the PC CARD LED on the Operation Panel Board is off.
4) Turn off the POWER SWITCH.
5) Then all the LEDs turn off.

3. Testing the blackout functions:


1) Hold down the BLACKOUT TEST SWITCH. (While it is held down, AC power
input is cut off.)
2) While the BLACKOUT TEST SWITCH is held down, check the following items. If
they all happen, the battery is in normal operation.

yThe POWER LED of the Power Supply Unit turns off.


yThe BATTERY READY LED of the Power Supply Unit turns off.
yThe BATTERY OP. LED of the Power Supply Unit lights up.
yThe ALARM BUZZER sounds.
yThe BLACKOUT LED on the Operation Panel Board blinks.
yThe DAU ERROR LED on the Operation Panel Board blinks.
yThe POWER LED on the External Operation Board blinks.
yThe ERROR LED on the External Operation Board blinks.
yAfter a few seconds, the FGB ERROR LED on the Operation Panel Board blinks.

3) Release the BLACKOUT TEST SWITCH, then the following happen.

1.5.4.2 How to operate the Data Processor Unit

1. To stop the recording of data onto the Protective Capsule Unit

ATTENTION Do not halt the recording of data onto the Protective Capsule Unit while
the ship is running en route. Data would not be recorded, should an
accident occurs.

1) Press the REC STOP SWITCH on the Operation Panel Board.


2) The RECORDING LED on the Operation Panel Board blinks for a minute.
3) The RECORDING LED on the External Operation Board blinks for a minute.
4) After a minute, the RECORDING LED on the Operation Panel Board turns off.
5) After a minute, the RECORDING LED on the External Operation Board turns off.
6) The recording of data onto the Protective Capsule Unit stops.

2. To restart the recording of data onto the Protective Capsule Unit

1) Press the RESTART SWITCH on the Operation Panel Board.


2) The RECORDING LED on the Operation Panel Board lights up.
3) The RECORDING LED on the External Operation Board lights up.
4) The recording of data onto the Protective Capsule Unit restarts.

3. To back up the data stored in the PC CARD

ATTENTION Do not remove the PC CARD while the PC CARD LED on the Operation
Panel Board is on. It may cause damage to the PC CARD. Make sure that
PC CARD LED is off.

1) Press the BACKUP STOP SWTCH on the Operation Panel Board.


2) The PC CARD LED on the Operation Panel Board blinks for about 3 seconds.
3) The PC CARD LED on the Operation Panel Board turns off.
4) Press the PC CARD EJECT BUTTON on the Main Control Board.
5) The PC CARD is ejected.
6) Remove the PC CARD, and insert it into the PCMCIA slot of a PC.
7) Copy the data from the PC CARD to the HDD in the PC, and put the PC CARD
back to the PCMCIA slot of the Main Control Board.
8) Place it in such a way that the JRC-label side points right. Be sure that the PC
CARD LED lights up.
9) When the PC CARD is inserted into the PCMCIA slot of the Main Control Board,
the PC CARD LED lights up.
10) Then the recording of data onto the PC CARD starts automatically.
11) The old data which have been recorded over 13.5 hours previously in the PC
CARD is erased.

ATTENTION If the PC CARD LED is off for 10 minutes or more, the ALARM BUZZER
sounds and the MEDIA ERROR LED blinks. If the PC CARD is inserted
into the PCMCIA slot in the Main Control Board, the ALARM BUZZER
stops.

LED or the SYSTEM ERROR LED lights up, follow the procedures described in 3.3:
Trouble Shooting.

2. Stopping the Data Acquisition Unit


1) Turn off the Data Acquisition Unit.
2) All the LEDs on the Data Control Board turn off.

1. Setting the connection for each sensor

1) Follow the instructions below if any of the sensors connected to the Data Acquisition
Unit cannot output signals for a long time due to malfunction or like.
2) Find which of the SENSOR CONNECTION SWITCHES corresponds to the sensor in
trouble in Table 14.
3) Turn off the relevant SENSOR CONNECTION SWITCH.
4) Turn off the Data Acquisition Unit and start it again.
5) Make sure that the both the OK and NG LEDs of the SENSOR INPUT MONITOR
LEDs turn off.
6) No ALARM BUZZER sounds even if no data are receiving from the sensor connected
to this port. (The data are being sent to the Recording Control Unit, though.)
7) Be sure to turn on the SENSOR CONNECTION SWITCH that has been turned off if
the sensor in trouble is restored to normal.

WARNING
Do not make checking or repairs of the inside of the equipment by yourself.
Checking or repairs by anyone other than our professional maintenance
staff may result in a fire or an electric shock.
Ask for checking or repairs of the inside of the equipment to the Sales
Department, the nearest branch company, a branch office, a sales office, or
any agent of Japan Radio Co., Ltd.

Do not use organic agents such as thinner and benzine to clean


ATTENTION the surface. These agents damage the surface coating.
Be sure to remove dirt and dust, if any, from the surface and
wipe it with a clean dry cloth.

3.1 Daily Maintenance

The life span of the equipment greatly depends on the adequacy of maintenance. To keep
it in an optimum operating condition, perform inspections of the equipment regularly.
Inspections enable problems to be identified before they become major malfunctions.

3.1.1 Cleaning

CAUTION
If the equipment is splashed with seawater or fresh water, wipe it dry
immediately. Ignoring the caution may result in failures or operational
malfunctions.

To remove stains from the equipment, gently wipe it with a soft cloth lightly impregnated
with neutral detergent.

3.1.2 Check the exchange term of the battery

Check the exchange term of the RCU battery and the underwater acoustic beacon that is
fixed above the capsule.
If the term of validity is approaching, contact the Sales Department, the nearest branch
company, a branch office, a sales office, or any agent of Japan Radio Co., Ltd.

3.2 Periodic Inspection

Yearly inspections are recommended on the inside of the equipment and on its connections
with the Power Supply Unit and the other devices. For these inspections, you will be
charged.

3.3 Troubleshooting

If the equipment does not function correctly, look into the list below for its symptom. Follow
the instruction for the symptom, for which the cause and the action to be taken are also
provided. If the symptom still persists or the symptom is not listed below, contact the Sales
Department, the nearest branch company, a branch office, a sales office, or any agent of
Japan Radio Co., Ltd.
