COVID-19 Real-Time RT-PCR
Test Description Value(s) Reference Range Test Principle: Real Time RT-PCR Specimen: Nasal Swab and Throat Swab Result Negative COVID-19 Not Detected Interpretation: • The SARS-CoV-2 RNA is generally detectable in naso-/oropharynx during the acute phase of infection. If lower respiratory tract specimens are available such as BAL or sputum, they should be sent as they have a greater chance of detecting the virus. • A "Detected" result indicates the presence of more than one gene specific to SARS-CoV-2 on the RT-PCR assay. The detection of more than one gene adds to the specificity of the result. While positive results are indicative of active infection. the detection of viral RNA does not always, necessarily equate to live virus. Non-infectious RNA particles will produce positive results on PCR. • A "Not Detected" result indicates the absence of more than one gene specific to SARS-CoV-2 on the RT-PCR assay. Negative results do not preclude COVID-19 and should not be used as the sole basis for patient management decisions. Negative results must be combined with clinical observations and patient history. False negative results can arise depending on the quality and type of the sample, degree and types of symptoms, and the timing of the test relative to the symptoms. • An “Inconclusive Result” indicates the presence of only one of the target genes of SARS-CoV-2 or inadequate amplification of the target genes on the RT-PCR assay. In case of persistence of clinical symptoms or appearance of new symptoms related to COVID-19, the test should be repeated after 3-4 days with a fresh clinical specimen.
