Inspired by the ideas of Marcel Duchamp and Akasegawa Genpei, this final issue explores the
concept of "involuntary sculptures." These are objects and structures in our cities, not created by
artists, but emerging from everyday interactions and casual arrangements. By recognizing and
appreciating these unnoticed objects, we can transform our perception, finding unexpected
beauty and meaning in the most familiar urban landscapes. What hidden masterpieces will you
discover today?

Urbanism is inherently conflict-driven, as Eve Blau points out in an interview in this issue of
'MONU'. According to her, because cities are places of power, representation, and contestation,
processes of urbanisation involve a certain amount of violence and destruction, which is both
positive and negative. Various authors and perspectives go on to explore this notion in depth.
Topics range from the Syrian refugee crisis, where people reshape their places and identities
while navigating the complex structures of belonging, to sprawl and emptiness as a chief tool of
protection in Australian capital cities and how the youth of Kyiv are returning to life as usual the
Ukrainian capital.

Negotiating Ungers 3
Common Books 2024 ISBN 9780988290655 Acqn 36441
Pb 12x16cm 240pp col ills £19.75
In 1972, German architect Oswald Mathias Ungers and his students at Cornell University
developed a prototype for a Self-Help Housing System (S-HHS). Around the same time, Ungers
and his wife Liselotte published a study titled Communes in the New World 1740-1972, examining
utopian communities in the U.S. Ungers' 1972 architectural approach fused typological research,
modern urban planning, and utopianism in a novel way. The S-HHS concept aimed to integrate
community-driven initiatives with broader political, social, and economic frameworks. Together,
the projects highlighted alternative forms of communal organization and emphasized the
dynamic, collaborative nature of architectural production. This third publication, initiated through a
2021 summer school at Kunstakademie Dusseldorf, explores systematic and inventive
architectural strategies through essays, interviews, and artistic research.

This issue highlights the work of adama-faiden, founded in Buenos Aires in 2005 by Sebastian
Adamo and Marcelo Faiden. Nearly two decades of work is traced through 34 projects in
chronological order. From small residential projects in their early years, the studio has
transitioned into an increasingly diverse practice, including a high-rise in central Buenos Aires
and social housing in Europe. Regardless of scale, what remains consistent in their work is a
considered approach to urban environments and a sensitivity to airflow. Their designs often
feature permeable facades and cohabitating plants, creating a soft, fluid connection between
interior and exterior.

Universal design offers a paradigm shift in how we understand and perceive human beings and
the diversity of abilities within architecture and urban planning. The concept introduces a new
approach to core aspects of architecture: sensory experiences, social sustainability, and
architectural qualities and meaning. In 'Universal Design - On Enabling and Empowering a
Diverse Population', Camilla Ryhl engages in dialogue with ten architects about their practices
and understanding of universal design. The book introduces a model for applying universal
design at three differing levels, providing a practical framework for creating inclusive and
accessible spaces. It is an essential read for architects, designers, and anyone interested in
creating spaces that harmonize with the varied abilities and experiences of all individuals.

5 Architecture Fables
Altrim 2024 ISBN 9788412878004 Acqn 36470
Pb 21x21cm 148pp col ills £33.75
Why are fables so appealing to children and adults alike? For the child, it can be a refuge in the
imagination; for the adult, an escape from the mundane. Fables intentionally expand the
imagination of children as they distort time and space, as well as logic, scale, and proportion.
Which are things architects sometimes do unintentionally. 'Five Architecture Fables' takes a long
and serious look at the discipline of architecture, in the process seeking to subvert the status quo
by exploring the possibilities for change. The fables address aspects that span the entire
discipline - architectural practice, education, conservation and building, and the future - for the
child in us all.

In the arena between traditionalism and imported architecture, Gong Dong had the wisdom to find
virtue in the middle way, and by combining his local training with a fruitful sojourn in America he
has managed to tie contemporary ideas and forms to eternal values of his country. The issue's
dossier presents refurbishments carried out to adapt pieces of industrial heritage for cultural
purposes: the Kunstsilo Museum in Kristiansand (Norway), by the trio of Barcelona practices
comprising Mestres Wage, Mendoza Partida, and BAX Studio; the Automatic Mills Silo in
Pardubice (Czech Republic), by Proks Prikryl architekti; and Atelier LUMA in Arles, by Assemble

A black-and-white photographic journey through the work of Mexican engineer and architect Luis
Barragan (1902-1988), who was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1980. Barragan's approach
emphasised the importance of native culture and its intersection with elegant modernist design.
His lasting influence can be seen in the work of many of Mexico's contemporary architects.
Despite the colourless photographs, the book still manages to introduce Barragan's hues in an
abstract way in its cover and binding. It also includes a text by architect Eduardo Souto de Moura,
where he justifies the importance of the spatial aspect of Barragan's work over his remarkable
use of colour.

'Owned by Others: A Map to Possession Island' treads the interstices of the institutionally
mummified city center that is Museum Island in Berlin. An embodied interrogation of colonial
looting and nationalist chauvinism, this book maps alternative orientations for decolonization,
restitution, repair, and empowering movement. OBO also considers how the alleged
"revitalization" of the museologized city center continues to exploit the lived experiences of
diasporic artists and looks to other practices of inhabitation and transformation to challenge these
legacies of oppression.
