Introduction:
Child labor is the exploitation of children through any form of work that
interferes with their ability to attend regular school, or is mentally, physically,
socially and morally harmful. Despite ongoing efforts to eradicate it, child labor
remains prevalent, particularly in developing countries. This report explores the
causes, effects, and potential solutions to child labor, shedding light on the
complex web of socioeconomic factors that sustain this practice. Such
exploitation is prohibited by legislation worldwide. Organizations like ILO
(international labor organization) and the United Nations have strong stances
against child labor. Their opinions can prove to be that it is a violation of
children’s rights. According to ILO an estimated 160 million children were
involved in child labor during (2020) with half of them being exposed to
hazardous work like mining, construction and domestic service.
Causes:
Poverty is the main factor, which pushes children to work. The unemployment or
low level of income of parents increase the likelihood of children being sent to
work as children “have to” contribute to the family income. Education can be
also be a factor of child labor because of high fees, insufficient school
infrastructure or lack of qualified teachers. When education is unaffordable or
unavailable it can result in of the path of work from a very young age. In some
cultures societies view child work as a rite of passage or a contribution to the
family’s economic stabilities. The children can be forced to work and
unfortunately the problem is increasing day by day.
Consequences:
The act of children laboring can lead to mental and physical abuse, long hours of
labor which can result in injuries and development issues. Sometimes working
children are refused to be accepted in education, limiting the future
opportunities that could have happened. It also disrupts the children of playing
time and social interaction. This ends up ruining their emotional and physical
health and growth. The prevalence of child labor creates a workforce with
limited skills and education, hindering a nation’s overall social and economic
development.
National Perspectives:
According to the ILO there are more than 3.2 million children laborers in
Bangladesh. Young children open tea stalls and weave between cars to sell
goods to people also work at garages or work in construction which is very
hazardous. Many of the jobs that Bangladeshi children do put their mental and
physical development at risk. According to the National child survey (2022) it
shows the improvement they have made to deduce the amount of child labor.
The organization has improvised ideas and strategies that will supposedly
eradicate the amount of child labor from Bangladesh by 2025.
Global Perspectives:
Child labor is widely regarded as a violation of human rights, particularly the
rights to education, health, and freedom from exploitation. The United Nations
(UN) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) have established conventions
and guidelines to protect children from hazardous and exploitative work. The UN
Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is one of the most ratified treaties
worldwide, and it asserts that children should be free from economic exploitation.
In the United States of America the labor department is charging more than
15,000 dollars to organizations who put kids at work.
Problem solving:
One course of action that has shown promising results in various regions is the
implementation of conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs. These
programs provide financial assistance to low-income families with specific
conditions attached, such as ensuring that children attend school and refrain
from work. CCT programs provide families with direct financial aid, which helps
reduce the economic pressures that often drive them to rely on their children's
income. By easing these financial burdens, families are less likely to send
children to work and more able to invest in their education and well-being.
CCT programs have often been seen to cancel the cycle of poverty by
prioritizing children’s education and health. One more condition of the CCT
program is the child has to attend school daily. More solutions are social
service, reuniting children with their families and helping the families in general.
Countries need to enact and rigorously enforce laws that protect children from
exploitation. This includes ensuring that minimum working age laws align with
international standards and holding offenders accountable. Raising awareness
about the negative impacts of child labor can change cultural perceptions and
encourage communities to value education over immediate economic gain.
Evaluation of sources:
Information taken from ILO, UNICEF, UN and Wikipedia are reliable. Some of the
information in this research report is taken from PDFs from the government site.
All the information is recent and relevant to the topic chosen. All the information
here is very new so it’s credible.
Conclusion:
Before doing this research on child labor I thought that the work that the kid’s my
age do eg.washing cars or construction was very easy and very efficient. This
research has really helped me to appreciate outside children more than ever. I
also thought that this was just a minor problem only in my country but as it seems
it is a global issue. All the countries in this world should take serious action to
those who make children work. We should all try to PREVENT CHILD LABOR and
create a better world for ourselves. I have learnt many things from this report and
I know this will help me in the future.
