PART – A
(Compulsory Question)

1 Answer the following: (10 X 02 = 20 Marks)
(a) A frame of reference is moving with an acceleration of 5 m/sec2 downward. Find the apparent force
and total force acting on a body of mass 10 kg falling freely relative to the frame.
(b) State the Kepler’s law of planetary motion which explains that a planet moves faster when closure to
Sun.
(c) What is reverberation of sound? How it is rectified in designing of an auditorium?
(d) What is the working principle of Acoustic Grating?
(e) The dielectric constant of a medium is 5. The displacement vector in it is 5 x 10−12 coulomb/m2.
Calculate the magnitude of electric intensity in it.
(f) The magnetic susceptibility of copper subjected to magnetic field of 106 A/m is -0.8 x 10−3 . Calculate
the intensity of magnetization and magnetic flux density.
(g) Differentiate between spontaneous and stimulated emission of radiation.
(h) Why the refractive index of core and cladding of an optical fiber are different? Which one has greater
refractive index and why?
(i) Write two applications of fibre optics method of pressure sensing.
(j) Explain how sensors can be used for smoke detection.

UNIT – I
2 (a) What is centre of mass? Discuss the motion of centre of mass. What important conclusions do you
derive from it?
(b) A system consists of particles of masses 20 g, 10 g and 5 g located at points P(2, 0, 3), Q (5, -4, 1)
and R (0, 1, 1) respectively. Find the position of centre of mass of the system.

3 (a) What is meant by frame of reference? Differentiate between inertial and non-inertial frame of
reference.
(b) Explain the working principle of Foucault pendulum.
UNIT – II
4 (a) What is absorption co-efficient? Discuss in details any one method of determination of absorption
co-efficient of a material.
(b) Describe various factors affecting acoustics of building along with their remedies.
OR
5 (a) What is the basic principle involved in non-destructive testing of a material. Also discuss its
advantages and disadvantages.
(b) What is magnetostriction? Describe the magnetostriction method to produce ultrasonic waves.

6 (a) Explain different types of polarization mechanism in dielectric qualitatively.
(b) Mention few applications of dielectrics.

7 (a) Describe the hysteresis curve (B-H curve) for ferromagnetic materials to explain saturation
magnetization, remnant magnetization and coercive field.
(b) If the magnetization and magnetic induction of a magnetic material be 3200 Amp/m and
0.005 Weber/m2, calculate the relative permeability of the material.

8 (a) Describe the construction and working principle of a semiconductor laser.
(b) What is population inversion? How it is achieved?

9 (a) Derive the expressions for acceptance angle and numerical aperture of an optical fiber.
(b) What do you understand by attenuation? Mention various types of possible attenuations in an optical
fiber.
UNIT – V
10 (a) What is piezoelectric sensor? Mention its working principle along with its applications.
(b) What is bimetallic strip? How it is used for sensing purpose.

11 (a) Write a short note on:
(i) Sensors for fire detection.
(ii) Temperature sensors.
(iii) Pressure sensors.
(b) Mention any two important applications of pyroelectric sensors.
