B: You know, yesterday I had a bit of free time and decided to try something new—I signed
up for a yoga class. Honestly, it was tougher than I expected, but I felt really refreshed
afterward! How do you usually spend your free time?
A: That sounds like a great way to unwind! As for me, I try to make the most of my free time
by reading or catching up on my favorite shows. When the weather’s nice, I usually go for a
walk or meet up with friends for coffee. It’s a good way to connect. Do you have any favorite
ways to relax?
B: During the week, I often just chill at home because work leaves me exhausted. But on
weekends, I love exploring new restaurants or trying different activities with friends.
Speaking of weekends, what do most young people around here usually do?
A: A lot of them hang out at coffee shops, go shopping, or catch a movie. It’s a great way to
blow off some steam after a busy week. Do you think there’s enough to do in our city?
B: I’d say it’s getting better, but there’s definitely room for improvement. That’s why I try to
stay active—exercising helps me recharge. How often do you work out?
A: I try to exercise at least four times a week—mostly jogging and hitting the gym. It really
helps with stress. By the way, what sports do you think are most popular in Vietnam?
B: Football is definitely the biggest! But badminton and volleyball are also common. You see
people playing them everywhere. Do you play any sports regularly?
A: I play badminton now and then, but I’m more into running. It keeps me fit and helps me
clear my mind.
Environment
A: I’m good, just a bit concerned about the environment after watching a news report earlier.
It talked about the increasing pollution levels in Vietnam, and it really got me thinking. What
do you think are some of the biggest environmental challenges we face in our country?
B: I completely agree! I think air pollution is a major issue, especially in cities like Hanoi and
Ho Chi Minh City. The waste management problem is also significant, with the rising amount
of plastic waste. It’s really concerning! Do you think the government is doing enough to
tackle these problems?
A: Honestly, I think there’s still a lot of work to be done. The government could implement
stricter regulations on emissions from vehicles and factories. They could also promote
recycling programs and invest more in renewable energy sources. By the way, what do you
think are some effective solutions?
A: Definitely! As a young people, I think we also have a role to play in protecting the
environment. What actions do you think we could take?
B: I think we can start by reducing our plastic use, like using reusable bags and water bottles.
Participating in community clean-up activities can also make a significant impact. Plus,
spreading awareness on social media about environmental issues can help influence others to
take action.
A: Those are great ideas! I also believe that choosing public transportation or cycling instead
of driving can help reduce our carbon footprint. It’s a small change, but it adds up.
B: Exactly! Every little effort counts. Ultimately, it’s about making conscious choices that
contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.
Technology
B: You know, I was thinking about how much time we all spend online these days.
Yesterday, I checked my screen time and realized I spend around five hours a day! It’s quite
shocking! How many hours do you spend online per day?
A: Wow, five hours is quite a bit! I’d say I spend around four hours daily. Most of that time is
spent on social media or browsing the internet. It’s easy to lose track of time. What social
media do you use these days?
B: I mostly use Instagram and TikTok. I love Instagram for keeping up with friends and
following my favorite influencers. TikTok, on the other hand, is just so entertaining with all
the short videos. How about you? Which platforms do you prefer?
A: I’m pretty much on Instagram too, but I also use Facebook a lot. It’s a good way to stay
connected with family and find local events. I’ve also started using LinkedIn recently for
networking purposes. By the way, do you have a favorite smartphone app?
B: Yes! My favorite app has to be Spotify. I use it daily to listen to music and podcasts. It’s
great because I can create my own playlists or discover new artists based on my taste. What
about you? What’s your favorite app?
A: I’d have to say my favorite app is Duolingo. I’m trying to learn a new language, and it
makes studying so much fun! I love how interactive it is, and it’s perfect for learning on the
go.
B: That’s awesome! How incredible technology has changed our lives, from how we
communicate to how we learn!

A: [Đứng dưới mái hiên, nhìn ra ngoài trời mưa] Oh no, I can’t believe I got caught in this
rain! I should have checked the weather before heading out. By the way, where do you
usually get your weather information?
B: [Cười] Yeah, it’s tricky sometimes! I usually rely on weather apps like AccuWeather or
the Weather Channel. They give pretty accurate forecasts. How about you?
A: I do the same! I love using those apps because they provide real-time updates. I also
follow local meteorologists on social media for more localized information. It’s really
important to know the future weather conditions in advance, don’t you think?
B: Absolutely! Being aware of the weather helps us plan our day better. If I had known it
would rain, I would have brought an umbrella. Plus, it’s crucial for safety, especially with
severe weather like floods and thunderstorms.
A: Exactly! Speaking of severe weather, floods and thunder and lightning are two significant
examples of extreme weather. Floods can cause widespread damage to homes and
infrastructure, while thunderstorms can bring strong winds and dangerous lightning strikes.
B: Right! It’s concerning how frequent these extreme weather events have become due to
climate change. Just last year, several provinces faced significant floods that affected many
families. It’s a reminder of how fragile our environment is.
A: I agree! It’s alarming how quickly conditions can change. We need to take these weather
patterns seriously. Ultimately, it serves as a reminder of how interconnected our environment
is and why we need to stay informed about climate change.
B: Exactly! Awareness and preparation can really help us deal with the impact of these
weather events. It’s essential for our safety and well-being. Plus, as young people, we have a
responsibility to advocate for policies that protect our environment.
A: Definitely! We should also think about how we can contribute personally, like reducing
waste and supporting sustainable practices. Every little effort counts!
Work
A: Hi! I just finished a presentation for my career planning class, and it made me reflect on
how much our aspirations have changed over the years. How’s your day going?
B: Hi! It’s going well, thanks! I’m also thinking about my future career choices and what I
want to pursue. What about you?
A: I’m doing good! It’s funny to look back. When you were a child, what did you want to be
when you grew up?
B: Oh, I wanted to be an astronaut! I was fascinated by space and dreamed of exploring other
planets. I remember watching all those documentaries about the universe. How about you?
A: That’s so cool! I wanted to be a teacher. I always loved helping my friends with their
homework, and I thought it would be great to inspire and guide others.
B: Definitely! Speaking of shaping our futures, where do you think is the best place to look
for jobs these days?
A: I think online job boards and professional networking sites like LinkedIn are the best
resources now. They provide a wide range of opportunities and let you connect directly with
potential employers.
B: I completely agree! Plus, many companies post job openings on their websites, which can
be really helpful. What about the usual retirement age in our country? Do you know what it
is?
A: Yes, I believe the usual retirement age is around 60 for men and 55 for women. However,
I think we should reevaluate ( ˌriː.ɪˈvæl.ju.eɪt ) this. With people living longer and leading
healthier lives, it might make sense to raise the retirement age a bit to reflect those changes.
B: Absolutely! Many people still feel capable of contributing to the workforce well beyond
that age. It could also help reduce some of the financial pressures on the pension system,
which is becoming increasingly important.
A: Exactly! Ultimately, it’s crucial to consider what’s best for both individuals and society as
a whole. If people want to work longer, we should support that choice.
B: I agree! It’s an interesting topic to think about as we plan for our own futures. We have to
be proactive ( /ˌprəʊˈæk.tɪv/) in shaping our careers and understanding how these factors
play into our lives.

Transport
A: Sure! If you go by motorbike, you can go whenever you want. But the bus has to go in and
out of many stations so you have to wait a long time. If unfortunately, it's rush hour, the bus
will be super crowded, and there might not even be a place for you to sit.
B: But all in all, the bus is still the best choice for students like us, right? Taking the bus is
much cheaper than other means of transport. Moreover, it's "greener", protects the
environment, and contributes to the sustainable development of our country.
A: I can’t agree with you more. Travelling by bus is still the most economical choice. So do
you prefer to take the bus or motorbike?
B: In case of travelling short distances, I still prefer to ride a motorbike. But if I go far, the
bus is a better choice. Especially when it rains cats and dogs, travelling by bus is much less
tiring.
A: Haha, that's right. Oh, the bus is here, I have to go now. Bye.
Challenges
A: Hey, quick question—are you someone who takes risks, or do you usually play it safe?
B: I think I lean more toward playing it safe. I like to assess things before jumping in. What
about you?
A: I’d say I’m a bit of a risk-taker. I enjoy the thrill of trying new things. What’s a big
achievement you’ve accomplished so far?
B: I’d say finishing my degree was a big one for me. It took a lot of hard work and
determination. How about you? What’s your proudest moment?
A: I’d have to say starting my own business. It was scary at first, but it’s been rewarding. Is
there any risky activity you’ve thought about trying in the future?
B: I’ve always been curious about skydiving! It sounds exhilarating but a bit terrifying at the
same time. What about you? Any crazy ideas in mind?
A: I’ve been thinking about bungee jumping! I love the adrenaline rush, but I’m not sure I
could actually do it.
B: That does sound intense! Maybe we could convince each other to try something new
together one day.

Stages in life
A: Nhu! Here.
B: I remember 4 years ago I was swamped with exercises to gain admission to the University
of Social Science and Humanity, and now I've graduated. How time flies!
A: That's right, 5 years ago I was still in university. But now I’m working and about to get
married.
B: I also congratulate you. (Hừm) Getting married at 27, so you're like most Vietnamese
people.
A: Of course! At this age, my job is stable and my mind is more mature. So I want to settle
down and have a family. What about you? When are you planning to get married?
B: Actually, I've never thought about getting married because I want to study for a master's or
doctorate.
A: As long as you like it, I will support you. Oh, your birthday is coming soon, do you want
to celebrate a big party?
B: Oh, sister, when I was little, I thought that such an important birthday only happened once
a year, so I had to invite all of my friends and buy a nice big cake. The older I get, the more I
feel that it is not necessary. Just a meal with the whole family is enough.
A: I am a person who likes excitement, so I now like you when you were young. I prefer to
invite friends and have a birthday cake. You now like a little old lady. Ah, your brother-in-
law is here to pick me up, I will go home first. Bye, Nhu
B: Goodbye, sister.
Holidays
A: Nhu, can you hear the cicadas? We're almost on summer vacation.
B: That's right. I think going to the beach this summer is super reasonable. I love Nha Trang,
the beach is beautiful and clean. You can swim in the sea and eat fresh seafood, just thinking
about it makes me happy. Moreover, Nha Trang is also close, the travel expenses are not
much.
A: I like going to Da Lat more. The air is cool and it's also close to us. If Nha Trang has fresh
seafood, Da Lat's vegetables are the freshest in Vietnam. Just think about it, in the cool,
slightly cold weather of Da Lat, you dip vegetables in a hot pot and slurp the broth....
B: Oh my, stop telling, please. You're making me want to eat hot pot. But think further, if you
can go abroad, where do you want to travel?
A: I want to explore my own country first. Soon, if possible, I want to go to the Northwestern
provinces and learn about the culture of the ethnic groups there. Especially, I want to go to Sa
Pa to see the snow. Since I was a child, I have only seen snow on TV. What about you?
Which country do you want to go to?
B: Of course, Beijing, China. For so many years I have studied Chinese, and my biggest wish
is to go there and communicate with the locals. I also want to learn more about the ancient
culture of China.
A: Oh, no! I have a class at 1 pm and it is already 12:30 pm. I have to go. Bye.
B: Bye, be careful.
History
A: You know, I’ve been thinking about museums lately. Why do you think they’re
important?
B: I think museums are vital for preserving our history and culture. They help us learn about
our past and appreciate different perspectives. What do you think?
A: I completely agree! They’re like time capsules that connect us to our heritage. If you could
open a museum, what would it be about?
B: I’d love to open a museum dedicated to ancient civilizations. There’s so much to learn
from their achievements and how they shaped the world. What about you?
A: That sounds fascinating! I’d focus on the history of innovation. I think it would be
amazing to explore how inventions have transformed society and everyday life.
B: That’s a great idea! A museum like that could highlight key moments in history and the
inventors behind them.
A: Exactly! Plus, we could have interactive displays to engage visitors and show how these
innovations impact us today.
B: For sure! It would be a fun way to connect history with the present. Museums can really
inspire people to think about their role in the future.
