CASE STUDY BASED QUESTIONS
0.29 Consider an isolated system ofn
interacting particles. The
mutual forces between pairs of particles in the system
cause
changes in momenta of the individual particles. By third law,
the mutual forces between any pair of
particles are equal and
opposite. By second law, the change in momenta for any pair
of particles are FAt
and-FAt.Thus the momentum changes
cancel in pairs and total momentum of the system
remains
constant. The leads to a fundamental principle of physics
called the law of conservationof linear
momentum. Thislaw
states that the total linear momentum of an
isolated system
of interacting particles is conserved. The
recoil of a gun on
firing, explosion of a bomb into different fragments due to
internal forces, the working of rockets and jet planes, etc.;
can be explained on basis of
momentum conservation. 4)

Q.30 Surface tension is the property by virtue of which of the free
surface of a liquid at rest behaves like an elastic stretched
membrane. It is measured as the force acting per unit length
of an imaginary line drawn on the liquid surface, the direction
of force being perpendicular to this line and tangential to the
liquid surface.
Surface tension =Force/ Length
Or surface tension= F/|
10
Surface tension arises due to excess of potential
energy of
the molecules on the ssurface in comparison totheir
potential
energyin the interior. The aadditional potential
energy per unit
area of the liquid surface as compared to the molecules in
the interior is called the surface energy.
