THEORY OF MACHINES
Before answering the question-paper candidates should ensure that they have been supplied
to correct and complete question-paper. No complaint, in this regard, will be entertained
after the examination.
Note : Attempt Four questions in all. All questions carry equal marks.
1. (a) What are the different types of constrained motions ? Explain each type with
an example.
(b) What do you mean by inversion of mechanism ? Describe the possible
inversions obtained out of single slider-crank mechanism.
2. (a) Drive an expression for the magnitude and direction of Coriolis component of
acceleration. When will it exist ?
(b) The crank of a slider crank mechanism 300 mm and connecting rod is
1500 mm. The crank rotates at a constant speed of 300 rpm, clockwise.
Calculate the velocity and acceleration of the slider when crank has turned 30º
from the inner dead centre position.

3. Draw the profile of the cam when the roller follower moves with cycloidal motion
during out stroke and return stroke, as given below : (i) Out stroke with maximum
displacement of 31.4 mm during 180º of cam rotation, (ii) return stroke for the next
150º of cam rotation, (iii) Dwell for the remaining 30º of cam rotation. The
minimum radius of the cam is 15 mm and the roller diameter of the follower is
10 mm. The axis of the roller follower is offset by 10 mm towards right from the
axis of cam shaft.

5. (a) Explain clearly the terms : static balancing and dynamic balancing.
(b) A rotating shaft carries four radial masses A = 8 kg., B, C = 6 kg. and D =
5 kg. The mass centers are 30 mm, 40 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm respectively
from the axis of the shaft. The axial distances between the planes of rotation
of A and B is 400 mm and between B and C is 500 mm. The masses A and
C are at right angles to each other. Find for a complete, (a) the angle of the
masses B and D from mass A, (b) the axial distance between the planes of
rotation of C and D and (c) the magnitude of mass B.

(b) The cranks of a two cylinder uncoupled inside cylinder locomotive is at right
angled and is 300 mm long. The distance between the centre lines of the two
cylinders is 650 mm. Wheel centre lines are 1.6 metres apart. Reciprocating
mass per cylinder is 300 kg. Driving wheel diameter is 1.8 metres. If the
hammer blow is not to exceed 45 kN at 100 km/hr, determine :
(i) Fraction of reciprocating masses to be balanced
(ii) Variation in tractive effort, and
(iii) Maximum swaying couple.
7. (a) Describe the effect of Gyroscopic couple on a Naval ship during pitching and
steering.
(b) A racing car weighs 20 kN. It has a wheel base of 2m, track width 1m and
height of C.G. 0.3 m above the ground level and lies midway between the
front the rear axle. The engine flywheel rotates at 3000 rpm in clockwise
direction when viewed from the front. The moment of inertia of the flywheel
is 4 kg-m2 and moment of inertia of each wheel is 3 kg-m2. Find the
reactions between the wheels and the ground when the car is taking a right
turn of 15m radius at 30 km/h, taking into consideration the gyroscopic and
centrifugal effects, each wheel radius is 0.4 m.
8. (a) Explain clearly, how you would determine from the controlling force curve
whether a governor is stable, unstable or isochronous ?
(b) The weight of each ball of a Proell governor is 60 N and the load on sleeve
is 480 N. The lengths of arm and suspension links are 30 cm long. The upper
arms are pivoted on the axis of rotation whereas the lower arms are attached
to sleeve at 4 cm from the axis of rotation. Determine the equilibrium speeds
corresponding to extreme radii of 20 cm and 25 cm.
