TYPES OF FUNCTION

Types of Functions:
Linear function
Quadratic function
Absolute Value function
Piecewise function
Remember this
Domain and Range of any Function
Domain of a function is the set of all
the possible values of x for which
the function is defined.
Range of a function is the set
of f(x), where x is an element in the
domain of the function.
LINEAR FUNCTION y-axis

x-axis
A function f is linear if
f(x)=mx+b, where m and b
are real numbers and m and f(x)= 2x-7
f(x) are not both equal to
zero.
LINEAR FUNCTION y-axis

Recall that: x-axis

m is the slope rise over run

f(x)= 2x-7
b is the y-intercept

point where the graph of a function crosses the

y-axis or this is the value of y when x=0
LINEAR FUNCTION y-axis
In this function f(x)= 2x-7
x-axis
m is 2
b is -7
f(x)= 2x-7
Domain and Range:
all real numbers or (- , )
CONSTANT FUNCTION
y-axis
A linear function where m=0
and b is any real numbers.
Thus, f(x)=b
x-axis
Since m=0, this means the
graph has no slope.

since f(x)=-2.5, then b= -2.5 f(x)= -2.5

Domain and Range of a Constant Function
Domain:
all real numbers or (- , ) in symbols y-axis

Range: y= -2.5
x-axis
How????
Since there is only one value of y
no matter what the value of x is. In
f(x)= -2.5
this case, y is always -2.5.
CONSTANT FUNCTION: other example
In this function f(x)= 7 y-axis
9
m is 0
b is 7/9 f(x)= 7
9

Domain: x-axis

all real numbers or (- , )

Range:
y=7/9
IDENTITY FUNCTION y-axis

A linear function where m=1

and b is 0. thus, f(x)=x f(x)=x

The coordinates of all the

points in this function are x-axis
identical. Observe points,
A(-2,-2), B(-1,-1), C(1,1),
D(2,2) and E(3,3)
Domain and Range of Identity Function
Domain and Range: y-axis

all real numbers

or (- , ) in symbol f(x)=x

How????
Since the coordinates are identical, x-axis

it means whatever the value of x is,

it is also the resulting value of y.
QUADRATIC FUNCTION
y-axis
A quadratic function is any
equation in the form of
f(x)=ax +bx+c, where a, b, f(x)=x +4x+3
and c are real numbers and a
is not equal to 0

We can't have a zero value for a since this will

result to a linear function.
x-axis
QUADRATIC FUNCTION
in this given function f, y-axis
a=1, b=4 and c=3

the graph of a quadratic

function is called a parabola
f(x)= x +4x+3
if a is positive, the parabola
opens upward and k of the
vertex is the minimum
if a is negative, the parabola
opens downward and k of the x-axis
vertex is the maximum
QUADRATIC FUNCTION
the point where the parabola changes direction y-axis
the vertex of the parabola is point A (-2,-1)

f(x)=x +4x+3
The vertex (h, k) of a parabola can be
solved by the formula:

h= -b k= (4ac- b2 )
2a 4a

when a is negative, k here is the maximum

x-axis
when a is positive, k is the minimum
Domain and Range of a Quadratic Function
y-axis
Domain:
all real numbers
f(x)=x +4x+3
or (- , ) in symbol
How????
Since whatever the value of x is,
the function will always be defined.
x-axis
Domain and Range of a Quadratic Function
y-axis
Range: y > -1
f(x)=x +4x+3
How????
Since that the parabola opens
upward from y= -1

x-axis
Domain and Range of a Quadratic Function
y-axis
Range: y > -1
f(x)=x +4x+3
In getting the range, just identify/
solve for the ff.:
opening:
upward suggests >
downward suggests < x-axis
k in the vertex (h, k)
QUADRATIC FUNCTION: other example
y-axis

x-axis
Vertex: B(-1/4 ,-23/8)

The maximum point: k= -23/8

Domain: all real numbers f(x)=-2x -x-3

or (- , )

Range: y < -23/8

ABSOLUTE VALUE FUNCTION
y-axis
In the absolute value function h=3
a=1 k=0
f(x)= |x-3|, a= 1, h=3 and k=0.
Hence, the vertex of the graph f(x)= 1 |x-3|+0
is at (3,0).
The slope of

the ray to the

vertex
Domain and Range of an Absolute Value Function
y-axis

Domain:
all real numbers
f(x)= |x-3|
or (- , ) in symbol
How????
Since whatever the value of x is, x-axis
the function will always be defined. (3,0)
Domain and Range of an Absolute Value Function
y-axis
Range: y>0
How???? f(x)= |x-3|
Since that the graph opens
upward from y= 0
