he morning sun was shining gently on Spanish Banks in Vancouver, British Columbia. My heart was filled with warmth and gratitude while I practiced Ba gua, my daily walking meditation. I am the sun, I am the singing birds, I am the ocean, I am the woods, I am the mountainsyes, I am the Universe, and the Universe is me. This awareness first awakened in me at a Bodhi Meditation and Fitness Retreat in 2006, and from that moment on Ive never looked back, moving ever forward on the transformational path of Buddhist thought. In present day, Buddhism is often taught in two forms: religious Buddhism and philosophical Buddhism. The Buddhas teachings are followed by many people who do not consider themselves religious, and who are not necessarily trained as priests. The Buddhist principles for living a healthy and happy life are practical and applicable to every detail of daily existence. In this inaugural issue, we include basic knowledge of meditation and spirituality to provide guidance and support to those interested in walking a conscious path. Master JinBodhi pinpoints the essential nature of life: compassion, which he cultivates and disseminates to every single living being he encounters in his life. His impact is profound, and in a series of interviews several of our students discuss how they have been awakened, moved and transformed. he winter months are rainy season in Vancouver, Canada, when the landscape and its inhabitants experience constant damp. Even in such a season, there are occasionally sunny breaks. Conversely, in my memory, my childhood passed without any sunny days. Born in a small, poor town in the Hebei province of China, my early years coincided with the Cultural Revolution, which was a period of immense social and political turmoil. When my mother was pregnant with me, my parents became the victims of political struggles and were sent to a re-education camp in the countryside. Due to poor living conditions and lack of food, she suffered from severe malnutrition and gave birth to a very sick child. From the time I came into this world, I suffered from all manner of illness that doctors said was a direct result of malnutrition. I spent every single day in pain and misery. Not only did I suffer from my own illnesses, but as I grew up I also had to witness the tragic deaths of my dear family members. My older brother died of starvation and then was followed by my younger brother, who suddenly passed away. I was haunted by my mothers heartbroken crying, my fathers helplessness, the coldness of relatives and mistreatment at school. All of these miseries were my first taste of what I later came to understand as the suffering of human beings. The grief of losing loved ones at a tender age, combined with the other attendant sorrows and struggles, left a deep scar on my young heart. I watched other kids laughing and playing, but I was not able to join them. My poor health disabled me, and I could not lead a normal life. My entire childhood was full of suffering, hunger, hatred and hopelessness. Looking back, however, Ive come to realize that

traumatic early experiences provided me with an understanding of suffering, misery and hopelessness, and an ascertainment of the true nature of life. When I was six years old, our family moved to Qinghai, a plateau region marked by oxygen deficiency. As a result, my already poor health further deteriorated. My parents sought any possible treatments to save my life, but there was little improvement in my physical condition. Finally, they found a former lama (at that particular time there was no religious practice allowed and monks were forced to return to secular life) and asked him to help me. As the wise maxim goes, misfortune may be a blessing in disguiseindeed it was for me. The lama found by my parents in a desperate bid to heal my body became my first master. He not only I realized that the self is tiny and limited, and my view treated my illness, but also taught me Buddhist meditaof the Universe was transformed. I no longer desired tion practice. Meditation Basics
ost forms of meditation encourage the focusing of thought and the mindfulness of mental distractions: pleasant, unpleasant, habitual and so forth. Most meditation promotes thought-pattern recognition and renewed perspective, effecting calm and a sense of being grounded regardless of the style of practiceexcellent news, given the sheer volume of meditation styles from which to choose. Some styles require frozen physical postures (static meditation); some make use of meditative gestures and movement (dynamic meditation). Others are defined by complete silence, or by chanting and visualization. Many modes stipulate focused concentration on a single object, act, sound or concept. If the mind becomes distracted from its focal point, the response is simple: acknowledge the distraction and gently return to the desired mental focus. The resulting mental state is calmer, clearer and more creative. Remarkably, practitioners of meditation

often experience improvements not only in their mental function, but also in their physical faculties. More and more, branches of the medical community agree that mental state plays a significantly greater role in physical health than formerly believed. There is a growing body of research supporting the positive effects of meditation on the regulation of sleep, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, metabolism, brain chemistry, pain-response and stress. Some of the more scientifically studied forms of meditation have been shown to lower the level of stress-related chemicals in the body and encourage brain function. In the majority of practitioners, meditation simultaneously lowered heart rate and blood pressure while reducing stress levels, thereby positively affecting the immune system. As such, meditation is the only traditionally spiritual practice that is widely prescribed by modern psychiatrists and medical doctors. This produces an

interesting juxtaposition whereby patients in the secular medical world may be recommended techniques previously ascribed to religious or philosophical pursuits. Indeed, meditation is popularly associated with Buddhism, though it is practiced in many important world traditions (e.g., Islamic Sufism, Sikhism, Hinduism, etc). In the Christian tradition, meditation has been biblically represented by the act of distancing oneself physically from the human world. This distance is often maintained for long periods of prayer and fasting in order to connect with the will of God (e.g., Jesus and Saint Francis). The Hesychasts of Byzantine Christianity practiced a form of meditation that included silently concentrating on the navel area, likely influenced by the same Eastern traditions that gave rise to forms of popularized Zen and Taoist meditation. In recent times, the practice is most commonly

associated with monastic life. In Buddhist meditation, particular importance is placed on the difficult-to-define quality of mindfulness: an even awareness of ones thoughts, perceptions, interpretations, intentions, actions and environment. The most well-known forms of meditation in this tradition include vipayan (Sanskrit for insight or analysis meditation) and amatha (tranquility or concentration meditation). amatha, which is sometimes known as samdhi, is the most widely practiced form. npanasati, or breath-awareness meditation, is often used in conjunction with other techniques. Bodhi Meditation includes static, dynamic and visualization components. It is born of the Buddhist tradition, but not affiliated with any religion. As envisioned by Meditation Master JinBodhi, Bodhi methods are based in traditional meditation wisdom that has been adapted to address the realities of modern living.

Getting Started

The Sitting Posture of Bodhi Meditation In Chinese, stillness meditation is often referred to as lotus sitting, or Chan practice The . Meditation of Purity belongs to this category of meditationyou need to understand and be comfortable with the essentials of the sitting posture if you are going to practice this enjoyable skill. The Lotus Position
In meditation, one typically assumes the lotus position: sitting cross-legged with one ankle on each thigh. If you cant sit in the lotus position, you can also assume the half-lotus (cross-legged with one ankle on the opposite thigh and the other on the ground), sit with a single leg crossed, or assume whichever position feels most comfortable to you. Initially, your legs may feel numb or sore while you are in the lotus position. If the feeling becomes too bothersome, you can switch legs (so that the leg initially crossed over top is now crossed beneath), or temporarily uncross them until the discomfort has subsided. Better yet, if you are willing to work through the numbness, then just let it be. After youve practiced the lotus position a few times, youll notice it getting rapidly easier.

Listening to music while you meditate and concentrating on the images created can help you gradually achieve states of tranquility and composure.

Namaskra Mudra (The Salutation Mudra) Place your palms together and hold them at chest level with fingers pointing upward. Dhyna Mudra (The Meditation Mudra) Palms up, place your right hand in the palm of the left. The tips of your thumbs should touch and your hands should be resting on your lap. Simply put, the left hand is cupping the right.

Phenomena During Meditation


Images may appear before your eyes. These come into being naturally and vary depending on each individuals physical and mental state. You should neither seek them, nor attempt to avoid them. Just let them be, without becoming overly concerned or entranced with themlet them go. Your body temperature may increase and you may perspire slightly, a sign of enhanced blood circulation. If your tongue is touching the ridge behind your teeth, you may find that you are producing more saliva than usual. Do not be disturbed if you find yourself swallowing often. During meditation, your body may shake and sway, which is to be expected when the body relaxes and the vital energy of internal organs flows. It is not a cause for concern. Your stomach may make noises and your muscles may twitch; this is also normal.

Attaining Tranquility (Santi) (


Attaining tranquility is preliminary to entering the state of composure. Try to purify your mind by clearing it of troubling thoughts. It is helpful to harmonize your mind with your breath. Allow yourself to feel as though your body is as light as air. Allow your physical self to feel less and less defined, as though your physical boundaries are fading away. You might try listening to a guided meditation by Master JinBodhi (cd or dvd). Listening closely and visualizing as guided, you will be able to enter a state of tranquility with greater ease.

Attaining Composure (Samadhi)


The state of composure (sometimes, true concentration) is somewhat challenging to describe. Thoughts are further purified; the individual enters a state of synchronicity with the Universe. People who have attained composure generally feel energetic, cheerful, lucid and physically comfortable. Time does not seem to pass they may feel as if theyve only been meditating for a few minutes even though several hours have elapsed. Scientific evidence suggests that the bodys metabolism slows down while in this relaxed state of tranquilityas does its oxygen consumption, which lowers to about half of what it is during sleep. Meanwhile, the brain experiences optimum recuperation and is provided with more nourishment than during any other state. The body also begins to generate greater levels of heat.

Body Posture
You should keep your back straight and steady, allowing the posture to feel as natural as possible. You may also bend your chest forward slightly to lower the position of your heart and relax your diaphragm: this encourages easier breathing. The bottom tip of your spine may bend out slightly, giving the lower back a gentle inward curve, which will allow you to stay seated for longer periods. The lower abdominal area should also be relaxed to stabilize the bodys center of gravity. In addition, you should keep your neck upright, but without stiffening. Try to endow each aspect of your position with a sense of relaxation and lightness.

Final Motions
After youve finished meditating, rub your hands together until theyre warm and slowly run them over your face, starting with your chin. Relax your legs, then pat and massage your whole body.

Things to be Aware of When Practicing Bodhi Meditation 1


People who have tried other meditation methods can also practice Bodhi Meditation. Nonetheless, two different methods should not be practiced in conjunction with one another. An interval of at least thirty minutes should be allowed between each.

Do not meditate when you are overly sated or ravenously hungry.

When you finish meditating, perform some closing actions (rub your hands together, rub your face lightly and pat and massage your entire body). Do not wash your face or hands in cold water immediately after meditation.

Wear comfortable shoes or go barefoot; dress in loose-fitting clothing; remove your watch, glasses, jewelry, etc.

Before you begin, make a conscious decision not to be violently startled by noises or disturbances. Be at peace and allow yourself to remain so.

If you practice outdoors, find a quiet, clean location in which to meditate. We dont recommend meditating in adverse weather conditions.

Dont be intimidated by ego-induced physical phenomena such as nausea, vertigo or difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these things, open your eyes, breathe deeply for a few minutes and then gently pat your body all over. Youll soon feel better.

Do not force yourself to meditate when you are exceptionally emotional (overjoyed, enraged, sorrowful, etc). Wait until you reach a state of relative emotional equilibrium before beginning.

Time and location are arbitrary; you can meditate any time and any place that suits you. Dont be frightened by images or visions that appear before you, but dont encourage them either. Try to stay calm and receptive.

1 What is the difference between meditation and self-cultivation?


Meditation is one aspect of self-cultivation, the process of mastering heart, mind and body. This process increases self-awareness and broadens perspective. A heart that is influenced by self-cultivation becomes clearer and more enduring; a feeling of calm becomes more frequent. The body grows stronger, healthier and more relaxed. There is a common and mistaken belief that sitting meditation alone is the totality of self-cultivation. Practitioners who hold this point of view behave as they always have when not practicing their sitting meditation. If an individual is a true self-cultivator, they are aware that even when the position of their body has altered, they are still capable of meditative thought. Everyday activities can be conducted with mindfulnessto do so is to be the essence of self-cultivation.

Women can meditate during their menstrual period or pregnancy, as long as they monitor themselves and avoid strain.

2 What scientific research has been done on meditation?


Many people have a limited concept of the body. They believe that the body is flesh and flesh alone,

erroneously dividing the concept of self into two exclusive categories: body and mind. Due to this misunderstanding, many attempt to nourish the former only by means of food and drink; they lack awareness of the necessity of nourishing the body through mental means, and as a result they suffer from physical maladies. There is a growing recognition that bodily illness may be born of psychological imbalance, for the mind is the bodys master. We are human and live in a world of daily struggle, and constant stress makes it challenging for many to avoid unhealthy emotional tendencies such as greed, anger, ignorance and so forth. These tendencies create our illnesses and our pain. Treatments that address only the symptoms provide superficial, temporary relief, while the root of the problem remains intact and capable of creating further damage. 5 How will meditation make any difference if Im having problems?


Most forms of meditation catalyze a relaxation response and improve mental-physical function; as a result, meditation may provide both immediate and long-term benefit to almost anyone. Moreover, there are other potential benefits of meditation, ascribed to the theory of causality. Causality states that behaviors, meaning oft-subconscious intentions, thoughts, words and actions, provoke matching responses. These responses occur both within an individual, and externally. In essence, the theory of causality is an extended version of cause and effect every act, including thought, has a corresponding result. Furthermore, the quality of the behaviors, especially the core intention behind them, determines the nature of the effects. Thoughts, words and actions that are positive (corresponding to the situation) create equally positive resultsthe reverse is also true. The results of any behavior occur without fail, though they may not be immediate or obvious. Meditation encourages an unobstructed understanding of existing and possible behaviors. This is an important point, as an unobstructed understanding of behaviors equals power to control them. For that reason, meditation is often the key to understanding and changing subconscious actions and patterns that create unfavorable responses in both the mind and the world beyond. Thus it logically follows that as meditation leads one into a more intimate relationship with the body and the mind, it can also lead to the selection of positive behaviors on even the most profoundly subconscious levels, creating the possibility of positive results in every aspect of life. Meditation offers the truly phenomenal power to free oneself from the fetters that prevent success and joy.

3 Who can practice meditation and self-cultivation?


Anyone can practice, because the innate wisdom that lies within each and every person is the same, though it manifests differently in accordance with the uniqueness of the individual. Some people who regard themselves as highly educated are limited by the mental tendencies developed through academic study. They are unable to discern that their inner growth and natural progress are being hindered by the limits that they have unconsciously placed on their thinking. Meditation provides a different sort of educationan experiential one. The irrelevant is set aside, providing new space for real and personal experience of deeper, more fundamental understandings. As there are so many different forms of meditation, there is likely to be a meditative practice suitable to almost anyone. However, if a particular meditation practice could aggravate an individuals medical condition, then it should be abstained from (e.g., deep breathing for asthmatics; sitting in certain positions for individuals with hip disorders). There are also certain mental health issues (e.g., schizophrenia) that may make meditation unsuitable for individuals managing those diseases. It is always best to consult with your doctor before embarking on a meditation program as a part of wellness management. This is particularly the case for individuals receiving treatment for mental health challenges.

8 Can the practice of Bodhi Meditation cause any problems? What safety issues may be involved in meditation?
Bodhi Meditation is a process of connecting with the nature of mind and body, thereby regaining a natural balance. There is no inherent harm in the process, though it is always best to learn under the guidance of a meditation master. During meditation, people may experience a variety of physical sensations, ranging from shivers to a feeling of heat. Also, different images may appear in the minds eye. These phenomena occur uniquely for everyone, as no two people share the exact same physical or psychological constitution. These phenomena are both harmless and unavoidable. There is nothing mysterious in the occurrences noted here: they are illusions, mere distractions created by the mind. Meditators should neither fixate on them, nor allow them to hinder their self-cultivation initiatives. Lastly, some people gain great benefit from their meditation practice without ever experiencing any of the abovethis is also normal. The Meditation of Purity at least once a day is recommended. Doing so maximizes the inherent benefits.

10 Can I learn from home?


Best results are normally attained if students first attend a Bodhi Meditation and Fitness Retreat at a Center. Not only will the foundation of learning be the strongest possible, but the speed of physical improvement will be the greatest as well. However, for students who do not participate in a Retreat, excellent results may also be experienced through home study when there is dedication to learning the techniques correctly. 9 How long before results appear?

Students can practice any time, day or night, although it is generally best to wait thirty minutes after eating. No matter when you practice, it is always optimal to continue for as long as you canso long as it is enjoyable. Be sure to practice everything in correct sequence, aiming for half an hour of practice, and then adding time to each session according to your ability. If you practice every day, you will definitely benefit. For many people, the common excuse for not practicing daily is that they work long hours and have no time to meditate. However, meditation is a wonderful way to get rested! Whats more, on many levels it invigorates and dispels fatigue more efficiently than sleep. We recommend that anyone who works exceptionally long hours put aside an hour of their normal sleep time for meditation. It will increase both the amount of energy that they have each day, as well as their work-related problem solving skills.

12 Which physical posture is best for meditation?


The lotus position is not directly related to meditation, per se. However, body and mind are best cultivated as onethat is the goal of self-cultivation. If you have never meditated in the lotus position, then you are not likely to know how much your body and mind affect one another, nor whether you have really linked them in your awareness. Meditating in the lotus position is an excellent way to enhance your willpower. If you are able to pass through the periods of discomfort, soreness and numbness that may result, then you are more likely to be able to meet the challenges and difficulties of your day without losing energy or focus. The lotus position should not be overlooked, as it is a useful tool. Once the position has been experienced a few times, it becomes easier to assume.

As meditation has to do with the mind and mental habits, it is actually possible to reinforce negative thoughts and behavior through unsupervised meditation. For that reason, it is always recommended that new practitioners seek out an experienced meditation master or other form of teacher, whereby they can learn correct meditation theory and execution (correct meaning most likely to produce the most positive outcome). The most important aspect of self-cultivation is the pursuit of a balanced heart-mind, not vegetarianism. Busan, Korea Faith and practicing meditation has brought good fortune to my family. In 2009, my father was seventy-seven. A fortuneteller had once said that would be his last year. On a summer day, my father had an accident: he fell from the roof of a two-story house onto ground that was littered with sharp metal scraps. To our amazement, he stood up free of major injury, with only bruising on his face and arms. We had no idea how he avoided hitting the metal scraps. My mother rushed to her altar, bowing with great gratitude. After my daughter heard the story of her grandfathers seemingly miraculous escape from injury, she began to pray and meditate regularly. One of my friends had a terrible car accident while driving to my home. When she called me from the scene, I intuitively replied, Youll be ok. Dont worry. Indeed, the two drivers involved were fine, although the cars were wrecked. I had then, and have now, the firm faith that everybody is blessed. Throughout the years of practicing Bodhi Meditation and implementing the Masters teachings in daily life, I have found that faith transforms me, filling me with infinite compassion and intuitive wisdom. Now, Ive stopped persuading friends to learn meditation. Instead, I influence people by my example.

LING WANG
Los Angeles, USA Ling was one of four hundred students who graduated from the Third Level Meditation Class in 2009. She didn't only learn in-depth buddhadharma, but also mastered a set of healing skills. Ling couldnt wait to test her new skills, and while at work she approached a colleague, Dean. My Master taught me a new magic to diagnose ailments. Do you want to try me? Curious but skeptical, Dean agreed. After utilizing her newfound gifts, Ling was able to list his physical difficulties: toothache, uneasy stomach, strained lower back muscle and respiratory problems. Dean was speechless, dumbfounded by Lings accurate diagnoses. She had ascertained all of his ailments, including Deans malfunctioning lungs and trachea that had been damaged by smoking years prior. Ling was happy to offer an energy healing session to Dean. After ten minutes of Lings energy work, his lower back relaxed and his toothache was fading. Dean walked away bewildered by his transformative experience. From then on, he became a faithful client of Lings energy healing.

JUDY LIN
Taipei, Taiwan Judy learned chanting and praying through Bodhi Meditation. Much to her surprise, her prayers were answered. Judys parents had fought throughout their relationship, continuing to quarrel well into their mature years. Noisy arguments disturbed the peace of everyone around them. In Chanting Class, Judy dedicated her prayers to her parents, praying for them to live together in peace. She visualized them living in harmonious accord, impatience replaced by compassion. Then, the inexplicable happened: Judys parents began an unprecedented ceasefire. Their sudden harmony lasted weeks, and the weeks became months. Not only had the couple stopped bickering, but they were enjoying longer and more frequent time together, even venturing out to their favorite restaurant for dinner. Its moving to see my parents enjoying a peaceful and simple life in their last years. I couldnt change them, but my prayers did. Thank you, Buddha. Judy now prays for all couples, young and old. I Had a Wish

or thirteen years I worked as a flight attendant with Cathay Pacific Airways in Hong Kong before moving to Canada. Working as a flight attendant is difficult and demanding, as frequent flying over the long-term leads to insomnia, and repetitive jet lag can cause hormonal imbalances. The backs and shoulders of the cabin crew are often strained, as serving passengers requires a great deal of lifting, carrying, bending and twisting. About four years ago my health began to deteriorate rapidly. Insomnia caused constant exhaustion, and my back pain was worsening. In addition, a new problem arose, an allergy to pollen that contributed to my overall feeling of malaise. When I began practicing Bodhi Meditation, I was amazed by the sudden disappearance of my allergy symptoms. My insomnia improved along with other health issues, and my energy increased as a result of my newfound commitment to meditation. If I had learned Bodhi Meditation during my tenure as a flight attendant, I have no doubt that I would have been free of job-related health issues. As such, as my practice progressed, I wished for the opportunity to one day share what I had learned with my former colleagues at Cathay Pacific Airways. In October of 2010 I was vacationing in Asia and called my former boss, Eliza, to say hello. She was diagnosed with colon cancer two years ago, and had recently returned to work after undergoing medical treatment combined with complementary therapies. I passed along some meditation music cds, believing they would aid

her recovery, and offered to give my Cathay friends a meditation class. Eliza, eager to balance her health with the demands of her job, was happy to organize it. On October 23, 2010 my wish to help those at my previous workplace came to fruition. I conducted a half-day introductory meditation class at Cathay City in Hong Kong. All participants had a wonderful experience learning meditation and relaxation skills. They loved The Prajna Mantra chanting, which facilitated a collective state of deep peace. My Indian friend, Dilecta, shared that she felt strong energy flow while meditating, as well as the release of negative emotions. After I returned to Canada, I happily learned that those that shared in the class are continuing to meditate at home. Susan, who has been working in Customer Relations for more than three years, suffered intense stress caused by dealing with customer complaints. She was beset by frozen shoulder, and was unable to reach behind her back to clasp her bras. Within days of practice, she became able to clasp bras on her own. Dilecta, who was so inspired during class, is now teaching her friends to meditate. Through continued practice and persistence, I believe Bodhi Meditation will assist flight attendants in healing insomnia, backache and additional health issues associated with frequent flying, as well as forestalling other problems. LARRY IHORI
Cupertino, CA, USA Sullen and weak, an eighty-four-year-old Japanese gentleman walked with faltering steps when he first entered the meditation classroom in Cupertino Senior Center in California. Larry Ihori had suffered from Parkinsons in his senior years and was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008. Chemotherapys harsh side-effects ravaged his body, making his legs, which were already hampered by severe varicose veins, even weaker. Emotional expressiveness is not often attributed to Japanese men; however, Larry couldnt hide his misery and helplessness. When Larry began Meditation Class in early 2009, it was difficult for him to raise his arms overhead because of the uncontrollable shaking caused by Parkinsons. He was unable to sit cross-legged, instead sitting with his legs extended in front of him, leaning on a wall for support. After two months practice, a striking improvement in Larrys physical condition became apparent. He was able to raise his arms above his head, the once violent shaking noticeably diminished. A committed student inspired by his marked progress, Larry meditated over four hours a day. The biweekly blood tests necessary for chemotherapy treatment reflected his commitment to meditation practice, and his haemoglobin index stabilized, decreasing the amount of chemotherapy required. Larrys physician was amazed to witness his patients dramatic improvement, evident in both appearance and test results, and encouraged him to keep meditating to facilitate a speedy recovery. Larry is now a joyful and faithful meditation student. He has attended twelve sets of Classes in the last two years, and his health continues to improve. The varicose veins on his right leg have almost disappeared, and those on his left leg are sixty percent better. His warm smile expresses his happiness and gratitude to all he meets.

INFINITE Positive Energy

ve tried other forms of meditation because Ive been interested in it for quite some time, and Ive been trying to follow a spiritual path. Unfortunately, most of it was a sleep experience. But the Bodhi method takes me to a place that Ive never experienced with other forms. Joseph Ferguson, a Vancouver-based screenwriter, signed up for a twelve-day Bodhi Meditation and Fitness Retreat. By following a specific path, one can attain an awareness, a heightened consciousness, andat timesenlightenment. What really matters is not that experience itself thats part of the journey. What really matters is how you apply that experience in dealing with other people. By the fourth day [of the Retreat], I thought I was going to have to quit. My back felt as though somebody had a welding rod, and they were burning my back. It was just agony. And no matter which way I twisted or turned I just couldnt get it to go away. One particular practice of The Meditation of Greater Illumination was so painful that halfway through it, I thought, Im going to have to stop this, and go out to the lobby and stretchdo somethingbut I just cant stand this. But I stuck with it, and right after that, the master was playing his drum and chanting, and

somewhere in that process, something hit me and I had a moment of absolute, physical perfection. It was stunningly beautiful. For a split second, Joseph experienced a comfort in mind and body unlike any beforethe pain hed felt disappeared and did not return. My appetite decreased considerably. Probably by half. I wasnt eating a lot, or drinking as much coffee. I mean, if I drank coffee, I had one cup of coffee a day. For me, thats a big decreaseIm a caffeine freak. And I didnt feel the need for a lot of food. I was also sleeping much betterlike a baby most nights. I certainly had more energy. Emotionally happier, for sure, and more openly disposed to people, no matter what their opinion

was. I felt much more agreeable with everything. Some friends have noticed that I look younger healthier. Im more relaxed. More peaceful. I was using a medication, which I really disliked its a form of steroid that I had to inhale in the morning because of a lung condition. The condition is called copd, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, and its the result of a number of things, but probably mostly from smoking in my early years. And it had become quite a concern in the last three years. And Id been using this medication every day, sometimes twice a day. I think it was the third or the fourth day [of the Retreat] I stopped using it, and I havent used it since. And my breathing is better. It wasnt a deliberate thing. I didnt decide to stop using the medication. It was almost like I forgot to use it. Its a great thing to be breathing... With an ironic smile, he added, Nothing happens if youre not breathing. This was also the first time ever that Ive just fasted on water. By the eleventh day, Id experienced four days

existing just on water. Its a pleasant feeling, and it does seem to enhance my meditations. Physical illness was not the only challenge overcome as a result of the Retreat: Josephs building was targeted by thieves. His car had already been broken into twice when it was burglarized a third time during the Retreat. The first time a break-in occurred, I discovered it at six oclock in the morning. I was going to a meeting, and I found the window completely broken in the car. It looked like somebody had thrown a hand-grenade insideeverything was everywhere. So I just let go this scream, that Im sure you could hear a block away. Anger. Absolute anger and frustration that this had happened to me, and I had a meeting to go to, and blahblah-blah, you know? I was just completely caught up in it. The second time wasnt much better. But when it happened a third time, during the Retreat, I was like, I feel sorry for this guy [the robber]. I hope he found something that he wanted, and its not a big deal. Ill get it fixed... Anyway, I sorted it out, and it wasnt a big deal, and its still not a big deal. Its just marvelous to be able to do that. You know, to have the wherewithal thats coming to me, certainly through meditation. Otherwise, Id just react to that type of situation like a wild man again, looking for blood, looking for somebodys head: How dare they do this to me? This is the reason that I practice meditation, because I really do believe that this peaceful strength comes as a result of meditation. It fortifies. Its like going into the world with armor. I dont want to spend life reacting to everything. Reacting to lifeoverreacting emotionally. Ive spent a lot of time doing just that. And I am not the kind of person that believes things easily, or because others do. I have to see things and experience them myself. Now, Ive done just that, and Im absolutely convinced. I saw things that I didnt know could happen. I saw a woman who couldnt walk. And she was walking. By the end of the twelve days, she was walking. I saw people who were obviously releasing major emotional traumas and disease. To be a part of something like that is an incredible experience. Overall, the twelve days were fascinating. Theyve been joyful. Theyve been powerful. Theyve been restful, peaceful, painful, a lot of emotions... During some of the meditations when the master was singing and playing his music, it was... it was cathartic.

Joseph feels he is now realizing a lifelong aspirationto uncover the source of infinite positive energy. That is something that Ive always wondered about, and never really knew if it was possible, or if it was a dream, or... only if you prayed hard enough could you make it happen. How does one access the infinite energy? And thats what I feel Im doing in daily meditation practice. Its something that Ill use and commit to on a daily basis for the rest of my life. I look forward to continuing to become a better person because of itone day at a time.

Our original interview with Joseph Ferguson was conducted in the spring of 2007. We recently caught up with him to find out how hes doing now. Joseph practices Bodhi Meditation every day. In 2007 and 2008, he held a number of introductions to Bodhi Meditation in community centers in Greater Vancouver, sharing with the public the depth of joy and peace discovered through regular practice. Joseph has also taught two-day Bodhi Meditation Introductory Classes at the Center, and was a welcome inspiration to his students. Both in and out of the classroom, he shares his life experiences and the benefits ascertained through his practice, motivating many people to

try Bodhi Meditation. Joseph has attended multiple retreats, including the Third Level Bodhi Meditation Retreat, the most advanced program to date, which was held in August of 2010 and taught by Master JinBodhi. Bodhi Meditation recognizes Josephs service and commitment, and he was honored by an invitation to write the foreword for Master JinBodhis book of spiritual teachings. Subsequent to his experience at the Third Level Meditation Retreat, Joseph feels his meditation practice reveals his true nature. There is great naturalness to it. There is such a profound sense of satisfaction when Im doing it. I feel that my true nature is really engaged. It is a very difficult thing to explain intellectuallyI dont believe it really matters, because it is all really a matter of the heart. Consistent meditation enhances Josephs health, happiness and spirituality, and together with the precious teachings and gifts of spiritual energy given by Master JinBodhi, his practice has evoked a life- changing connectedness to all of Creation. There is no separation between myself and my Master, between myself and Buddha, between myself and Divinity, between myself and all of Creation. lagued with chronic asthma for over ten years, David Cai of Singapore participated in a twelve-day Meditation and Fitness Retreat in Vancouver in August of 2006. Ive been afflicted for a long time. I tried all kinds of medications, but nothing worked. I no longer believed that there was a cure, let alone that it would be meditationsomething I knew so little about. My wife signed me up for the Retreat without telling me. Shed even bought us plane tickets before letting me in on it! She really had her work cut out for her in convincing me to come. Id already given upbut not my wife! She always believed that there had to be a solution, that it was just a matter of time. David most feared the long-term bouts of sickness initiated by his asthma. They would start with painful and uncontrollable coughing. Consequently, the coughing would worsen his pulmonary inflammation, encouraging more asthmatic attacks. It was an awful cycle. The coughing generally continued day and night for two to three months, before slowly beginning to abate. Needless to say, David brought a bagful of medication with him when he came to Vancouver. Meds? he jokes, You want them? Bet Ive got them! Immediately upon arrival, Davids fears seemed to manifesthe fell sick, and the coughing was constant. We were staying at a friends house in Vancouver. Everyone noticed how unwell I looked, the ashen color of my face...

In an unfamiliar land, David battled with asthma that was growing ever more severe. His only thought was of returning home to Singapore. But after intense consideration, he decided to stay as long as he possibly could. I can go home any time, he told himself. Determined not to disappoint his wife, David made up his mind to attend at least the first part of the Retreat in spite of doubts. He began the twelve-day Bodhi Meditation and Fitness Retreat, accompanied by his wife and a family friend. With a dedicated spirit, David began to practice Bodhi Meditation in earnest. As he had feared, the first three days brought no reprieve. He continued taking his medication daily to relieve attacks. On the fourth morning, David coughed continuously and started feeling short of breath. However, after practicing The Meditation of Greater Illumination twice in a row with the other meditators, he was surprised to notice that his coughing had eased considerably. David was suddenly excitedit was incredible for him to show signs of recovery so soon after the onset of his asthma. In addition to regaining control of his breathing, he realized he did not feel the least bit hungry when breakfast arrived. Prompted by his wife, David ate a small piece of fruit and immediately felt too full for more. The feeling persisted, even through lunch. Our friend, whod already participated in the Retreat once before, said it was likely spontaneous fasting. Apparently, its not uncommon during the Retreat pretty incredible! David became convinced that the fasting was a good sign and started believing Bodhi Meditation might really help. By the afternoon, he had decided to stop taking his medications. The fasting continued on the fifth day. Other than a little fruit and water, David ate nothing. Its so odd to feel full even when I havent eaten, he said. It seemed to David that his body was cleansing itself, and that after ten years of heavy medication, the buildup of toxins was enormous. David Cai stopped coughing five days into the program, and he felt light-hearted in a way he had never known before. Other participants had started

commenting on his healthy glow, his wife among them. After so many years, he seems suddenly rejuvenated hes so handsome, she enthused. On the tenth evening, however, David had difficulty sleeping and fought a desperate need to cough. The awful cycle began anew with a vengeance: he was coughing up small traces of blood. He tried to go back to sleep, but the attacks struck every few minutes. When finally rest came, David fell into a deep slumber that lasted till daybreak. Upon waking, he discovered that his breathing was totally unhinderedan amazing and unfamiliar sensation. Asthmatic and fighting obesity, he had forgotten what it was to breathe with ease. I am very grateful to the many teachers at Bodhi Meditation, and for the wonderful assistance provided by Master JinBodhi. I want to share my story with everyone, to let people know what I believethat as long as they continue meditating and dont lose hope, everything will work out. With a wry grin, David concluded, I also think its important to acknowledge my wifes efforts. When alls said and done, I owe my health to her faith and perseverance.

Follow up
David and his wife returned to Singapore. A baker by trade, the use of flour and the smoke of the ovens had aggravated his asthma, putting his professional life at risk. To date, he has suffered no relapses and works more now than he was previously able. As a show of gratitude, David sent Bodhi MeditaDavid listens intently. tion some of his delicious baked wares. Concerns about the effects of Singapores air-quality heightened due to the Indonesian forest fires of 2006, which were similar in scope to the fires of 1998 that burnt twenty-five million acres (ten million hectares) of land. The entire region was overwhelmed by smoke and ash for weeks. Though cases of airway inflammation and coughing were commonplace during that period, David was affected less than most, remaining strong and healthy. Today, he is stronger than ever before.

first became acquainted with Bodhi Meditation in the fall of 2006. I was driving by a big red sign that read Bodhi Yoga Studio in Richmond, British Columbia. I was feeling stressed at the time and was thinking that yoga or some kind of relaxation method would benefit me. I investigated further, and it turned out that the sign was attached to a Meditation Center. Enthused, I signed up for an Introductory Class that was held on the coming weekend. The class was wonderful, and I had some immediate, profound metamorphoses. Although the guidance was given in Mandarin, and I am English speaking, the language translators helped to facilitate an experience of ease. I practiced on my own after the Introductory Class, but found that the high expectations that had been generated by my positive experiences at the Meditation Center were frustrated by a lack of progress. I had expected that my meditation practice, having been launched with great success at the Class, would continue to steadily improve. I was wrong, and Ive since learned that this is a normal and common problem for beginners. My practice faltered, although I still meditated once in a while, as on a deep level of my being I knew that great benefit was inherent in this path.

In the fall of 2008, Bodhi Meditation held a ceremony at the Chan Centre in Vancouver, in honor of the Medicine Buddhas birthday. At the ceremony, I met one of my translators from the Introductory Class. She has since given me a great deal of encouragement and answered all my questions with patience and grace. I began meditation in earnest then. There is a great deal of help available from the volunteers at the Center, and the drop-in sessions Thursday and Saturday evenings are highly beneficial. I realized that this practice was no easy ride, and to derive betterment I would have to discipline myself. Despite an apparent contradiction, self-discipline is actually the path to freedom. Further, consistency in practice is vital. Since deciding to just let things be with my meditations, and happen as they will, I have achieved some true progress! Life seems to get easier. Meditation does not prevent challenges in my daily life, but it gives me calmness and the realization of my own loving center. I have found that I dont worry as much and dont spend so much time reacting to events. Now able to be more

proactive with my own life, I am overcoming my shyness and lack of self-confidence. For me, improvements havent occurred all at once, but rather manifested in a gradual and gentle progression. My health has improved. I have more energy, and the healing of my severe carpal tunnel syndrome is well underwaya great boon as my job involves working primarily on the computer. The depression from which I was suffering has lifted, as though a fog has dissipated and the world looks much friendlier and more positive. I have witnessed some seemingly miraculous happenings at the Center. People who were desperately ill have, through meditation, cured themselves. My own progress, while perhaps not as dramatic as others, has seemed miraculous. But I have learned that there are no miracles here. It is simply that the Master has given us the tools to heal ourselves. I would recommend Bodhi Meditation to anyone. It is irrelevant who you are, where you come from, or the nature of your lifestyle and beliefs. All you need is a belief in yourself and a willingness to learn. You dont have to have any type of religious background or faith, and you certainly dont have to be a vegetarian. One thing I know for sure: if you practice every day and strive to be a good and kind person, this will work for you. In the spring of 2009, I signed up for a weekend Chanting Class, as Ive heard that chanting can be very beneficial and cathartic. It happened to be the Chinese Qingming Festival, or Pure Brightness Festival, also known as sweeping the graves. In fact, it fell on Christianitys Palm Sunday weekend. We chanted for the departed in our lives. At the beginning, the volunteers were passing out Kleenex and had placed boxes around the room so the participants could access fresh tissue easily. I didnt understand what was unfolding at first, as some people were literally sobbing, releasing their grief and old emotional baggage. It was an amazing thing to witness. Once I started to practice the chanting and praying, I was soon crying as well. It is a very freeing experience to let go of emotional build-upand save thousands of dollars of psychotherapy bills. The wonderful thing is that no one there is judgmental at all. If you end up sobbing and crying, volunteers will just pass you more Kleenex. The first day was certainly an eye-opener for me, in terms of realizing the large amount of negative emotion

that I carry around with me every moment of my life. Chanting is a way to get rid of it, if you are ready and sincere. The emotion will come pouring out, and you will feel so much better afterward. The second day was full of tears tootears of joy. We chanted and prayed for all living beings, including ourselves. There was a moment that I cherish very much. We were asked to make a wish. I wished for happiness. A different chant emanated then, powerful and awe-inspiring. People were chanting together and the power of sound and rhythm filled me with wonder. There were two male students sitting nearby who were the most marvelous chanters. They were in full voice, chanting at mega-decibel level. It was almost as though they were in sync with each other, and as one would finish a word, the other would echo it, in a long and very melodious bellow. They complemented each other so beautifully, yet Im sure that they were not even aware of each others chants. Their chanting was so uplifting and healing that I started to giggle, then to laugh. I was in the throes of a feeling of pure joy, and it needed to be released through laughter. The mlange of chanting was like listening to an orchestra with each

instrument tuned to its own pitch, doing its own thing. My stomach muscles began to hurt as I laughed and laughed, carried away by all of the lovely, sincere voices. Tears were running down my face. It was the most wonderful feeling! I have not had a release like that in years. I loved all the different voices and sounds going on around me, and knew that each and every voice was sincerely praying, and in so doing, was helping me to discover the genuine happiness I had wished for. I felt super-charged for a couple of days after that. My experience was a huge relief and release. The chanting, listening, laughter and tears must have caused a great surge in endorphins! Chanting in a group setting is a must-have experience. You can sing as loudly as you please, releasing all the old emotional dust and dirt. Dont worry about the quality of your singingit really doesnt matter. It is the sincerity with which you sing that counts. So, go aheadchant your heart out! At present, I have begun to study Ba gua, another form of meditation practice that originated in martial arts. I have tripped over my own two feet a few times, but stay tunedI will share my fun experiences later!

n June of 2010, Carol Nack traveled to Vancouver to participate in the Second Level Bodhi Meditation Retreat. A psychotherapist from New York, Carol had suffered chronic pain from long-ago car accidents. I was a cripple for many years. People thought I had been afflicted with polio. My body was very twisted and always in pain, and my ankle looked like a football. My friend Anne has treated me with acupuncture for years. She insisted I do Bodhi Meditation. She had benefited from it, and told me I needed it. I was eager to learn about energyindeed, that was my primary reason for attendingand also about becoming pain-free. During the first few days of the Retreat I wanted to run away, because I couldnt stand sitting for so long. I was in tremendous pain. Enduring intense physical challenges in the early days, Carol didnt know that her perseverance in practicing and patience in learning would bear fruit. It was very alien to me. It was alien to be a minority among a sea of Chinese people who were jabbering Chinese. It was sort of funny, actually. I called my daughter, and she said, You sound awful, Ma. Why dont you come home? But I told her, I cant. I always want to learn, and Im determined to learn something here. Im staying to the end, even though its awful. I was so angry, so annoyed to have to sit there, sit through The [Meditation of] Greater Illumination. I didnt sit, actually. For the first few days, I was lying down because I was so uncomfortable. I had such pain in my knee, and it was dreadful.

Every morning before class, Carol came to a park with her new meditation friends to practice Ba gua around a tree. Ba gua originated as a form of martial arts, and is taught by Master JinBodhi as a walking meditation. Practicing Ba gua boosts energy and cultivates a peaceful mind. However, it was not the Ba gua practice but the tree around which it took place that interested Carol. I fell in love with the tree. But I couldnt do the Ba gua. I couldnt even get around once, so I sat on the bench. I couldnt believe how much energy I got in my hands. It was unbelievable. Its a sensation of tingling, like static inside, which is qi energy. I know the label but Ive never really felt it. On the second day, the energy went right along my legs from my feet up to the top of my thighs. That was unbelievable to me. How could a tree give me so much energy, as if it was talking to me? And then... It didnt reach my body until the tenth day. The sensation of energy went from my legs to my arms to my head. To me thats miraculous. In Bodhi Meditation, students not only learn about the nature of energy, but also to feel energy. When Carol sat in stillness, she was able to access the Universal qi present in everything: in a tree, in sky, in ocean, in a small wildflower. Her discovery of this energy transformed her class experience into one of healing. On the third day, it just didnt hurt anymore. So that was fascinating... I was able to stand for the whole [Meditation of] Greater Illumination without sitting at all, neither sitting nor lying down. That to me was

amazing. Well, Im much straighter now. Today I dont have any pain at all. These are manifestations of something thats different physically. Although the physical benefit was immense, Carol was even more excited about sharing the realizations that surfaced in the Meditation Class. I became aware that all my clients, as well as myself, really have no access to the compassionate heart. Because in the service of survival, we all build detrimental defences in order to survive. So by the time we are grown-up, weve suffered tremendously, and we dont have access to the compassionate heart... [I had] the realization about the compassionate heart and how I need to develop that in myself so that I can pass it on to all the suffering souls that I work with. Bodhi Meditation, what I like about it is that its not connected to any religion. When I read about Buddha, its about light, and light is what I always want. I dont understand when the Master talks about transparent body. I dont get that and Im very hungry to get it. That kind of light is extraordinary. The label of Buddha Light is another form of enlightenment. Something has changed in me. Im not quite sure how I integrate that, but something has changed to absorb that light. How do I see it? Actually I see it like white light or light of the sun. To feel energy [is] to feel warm... my hands are hot for the first time. Being that, I have already integrated the notion of Buddha Light and energy. I want to say something about the Master, because I had a lot of trouble in the beginning thinking I had to pray to the Master because everybody in the room prays to the Master, thinking he is so wonderful.

And he is wonderful, he is a genius, but I need to see him as a trainer, the way I was guided by geniuses and brilliant trainers all through the years of my training in psychotherapy. I like to see him as a guru for myself. Thats helpful in training me, so that I dont have to bow down to another icon, which is so against my religion... I cant do that. But I can admire him with his genius, his extraordinary powers and his enlightenment. Its enviable. Im starving for lots of wisdom, and Ive gathered a lot of wisdom all through the years, but this is more wisdom. And I think [the Master] has, as a genius and an extraordinary being, the ability to convey his gifts to people who seek them. The compassionate heart, I really want to learn more about that. He has embraced that fully. None of my gurus have embraced that. The Master is another guru for me, whos going to show me the way to enlightenment, and thats exciting... I can understand what hes attempting to teach. I can now embrace him with his genius. I can absorb that kind of being energetically at the cellular level. Carol chose her healing profession because she remembered how much she had needed help. Im a Holocaust survivor... [My family and I] escaped and... we came to New York... I was fourand-a-half years old, and I actually didnt want to live anymore. Only later I realized that I was experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder... I suffered all my childhood with tremendous pain, hurt and upset. I was suicidal for most of my life. When I was twenty-six, I had the first car accident, and I survived that, then I had the second car accident. Both times my ankle... [was terribly injured]... The accidents were suicidal acts I did because I didnt want to live. My life was impossible. I realized I needed to heal myself from then on, because I survived. I saw the tunnel of death and I went into the sky and I wanted to stay there, and then I felt that I was shipped back. I was very angry at God, angry at the world that I had to come back. Then I realized that I came back for a purpose. I started training to be a therapist because I knew I had a mission on this earth: I have to help people. To her amazement, Carol saw that her mission is an embodiment of the Medicine Buddhas great wish, which is to set all beings free from suffering. Medicine Buddha? Im Medicine Buddha. All those peoples lives... Ive saved many lives. The definition of Medicine Buddha is an enlightened being.

When Carol works with patients suffering from severe depression, she tells them how fortunate they are. Not everyone experiences such extreme depression, which can provide the opportunity to experience extreme joy, moving from the pain body to the euphoric, energetic body that exists in the eternal Now. After experiencing vital life-force through Bodhi Meditation, Carol was confident that her psychotherapy work would advance to a new level. The Buddha Light shines through your heart. That helps me open my heart. If I can open my heart, then I can open the hearts of the people I work with. So thats cool. Then Ill use Buddhas infinite light and energy to save suffering souls, including my family, my clients, myself, soldiers involved in combateveryone. I also want to volunteer at the Veterans' hospital. Id like to do some work with the soldiers returning from combat who have post-traumatic stress disorder,

using Bodhi Meditation. The soldiers receive mostly injections [to treat post-traumatic stress disorder]. I have a client who is a veteran of the war in Iraq. Every week he says, Carol, you saved my life. Every week for the last eight years he says that to me. He says, You saved me from being in a back ward of the Veterans' hospital, a zombie from injections. Carol said she would implement three teachings from Bodhi Meditation in her work with soldiers: being aware of energy, patting to release disease and emotional trauma, and visualizing a compassionate heart. When I work with them now, Ill address the compassionate heart. What would it look like? How could you experience it for yourself? Theyll be very moved by that. Its extremely powerful. I really have learned a lot. Bodhi Meditation provides transformative peace and joy, and I will serve as an instrument of this peace in the world.

tions central goals by suggesting certain approaches to daily life. They are meant to benefit readers by providing awareness-building exercises that break down the barriers isolating people from each other and from the broader world.

hough most people in the world would choose to live in peace and joy if they could, reality rarely seems to allow it. Quite conversely, many of us experience life as a lost opportunitya suffering. Nonetheless, my own life has taught me that paradise is not as far away as we think it can be uncovered within the heart and the mind, as it exists for each and every person at all times with or without their knowledge. A perspective of loving appreciation can be applied to ones perception of any set of surroundingsfrom a blade of grass to the people and things that fill our days. Here are a few simple ways to apply a more appreciative outlook and improve your life: Every morning upon rising from sleep, start the day by eliminating any negativity within the bodytake fresh, clean water in your hands and wash your face; as you do, let any selfishness, greed, or impure feelings and thoughts be cleansed away. In their wake, seek clarity, mental acuity and a broader sense of self wonderful qualities to carry into the rest of your day. As you step out your door, soften your gaze a little and find a place of contentment within yourself. From that place, greet all of existencegreet the sky and everything that you see, near and far. Soften your step as well, and be aware of the life that may be beneath your feet; whole worlds of connection may be destroyed by a thoughtlessly placed foot. When I meet people on the street and they greet me with a smile or a glance, before I even open my mouth, I access a feeling of friendship within my heart and look upon them as members of my own family. Whenever our hearts brim with camaraderie and kindness, those same things are offered to us in return. This sort of positive exchange works so that we always receive more than we send out. Joy and good luck will surround us and it is inevitable that sunlight will grace our days. On the contrary, if we harbor selfish or vengeful thoughts, the world will respond by filling itself with equivalents darkness, inflexibility, worry and suffering. The thoughts and feelings that we cast into the world create the situations that the world sends us in return. If we cultivate thoughts and feelings that are rooted in kindness and compassion, then we are also cultivating wisdom and right living. In so doing, we accrue positive habits that lead to positive resultscausality if you willwithout thought or effort It happens naturally. Everything, every perception an individual has in their life, has been produced by that individual. Negative thoughts and feelings bring negativityso let your heart be full of love for the world, and the world will offer you love in return.

Eating and drinking are natural instincts for every human being. Food and water not only satisfy our survival purpose, but also play an important role in healthy living. Balanced and natural eating and drinking is vital. Energy in water
In Oriental philosophy, everything is categorized into yin and yang. Food of a warm nature produces yang energy; food of a cool nature produces yin energy. The balance of energy in our bodies is not always well maintained; however, through knowledge of the energetic quality of food, we can complement our physical and mental faculties by eating and drinking accordingly. For example, liquor and wine contain yang, or warm, energy which is mobile and upward in nature. Conversely, water is yin, or cool, calming and downward energy. When your anger surges up, place yourself in sight of a water view to help you regain equilibrium. believed that doing so helps to cleanse the digestive system and improve the digestion and excretion functions. If you dont experience improvement after two weeks, then add a little salt to the water. Saltwater helps to ease bowel movements.

Dont wait until thirsty How much to drink


The amount of water you need daily is dependent upon your age, physical condition, activity level and the climate in which you live, as well as other factors. For example, if you live in Vancouver, British Columbia, or a similarly mild, coastal place with an average summer temperature below 80 degrees (27c), then no more than six cups of water is needed. Too much water burdens the inner organs, but too little water also harms health. Our cells are breathing every moment, and a shortage of water intake slows circulation. When circulation stops, our lives stop, too. If we are unable to maintain healthful eating and drinking habits, our natural sense of thirst can become suppressed. For example, people who are busy in the workplace may not have time to drink water except during coffee breaks, despite being thirsty. Over the long-term, the body will adjust to the situation and stop signalling thirst. Symptoms of water shortage, such as dry skin, constipation, hyperplasia, irregular menstruation and others, may develop. Such symptoms remind us to drink water regularly, even before we feel thirsty, until we form a new healthy drinking pattern. over, listen to your body and resume a healthful intake of food and fluids.

Follow your intuition


A week-long Meditation Retreat may cause changes in eating and drinking patterns. When the Retreat ends and participants return to a typical lifestyle, more calories are often required to carry out normal physical and brain activities. Meditation training and practice establishes an intuitive sense, like that of a baby, of what, when and how much a person needs to eat and drink, and participants in a Meditation Retreat will re-enter daily life with instinctive knowledge of the diet their bodies need. Unhealthy diets or habits from the past would have been automatically corrected, replaced by a keen sense of nourishing practices. Listen to your body, follow your intuition and create a natural and healthy water-drinking habit.

When to drink water


It is good to drink a large glass of room-temperature water upon rising in the morning. If you suffer from chronic constipation, then honey water or ice- water is beneficial. The colder the water, the stronger downward-carrying energy it has. Some doctors and scientists recommend drinking a full cup of water ten to twenty minutes before a meal to relieve constipation, as it is

When we visit family doctors, they often tell us to drink more water. Water is integral to health; moreover, it helps to disseminate medicine throughout the circulatory system, helping the body heal. Nutrition Facts
Chinese cabbage is very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is also a good source of dietary fiber, protein, thiamine, niacin and phosphorus, as well as an excellent source of beta-carotene, vitamin c, vitamin k, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and manganese. Tofu is made from soybean, which provides calcium, iron, unsaturated fat, omega-3 fatty acids and protein that includes all the amino acids, making it comparable to animal protein. Tofu is very low in cholesterol and sodium. It is also a good source of phosphorus, copper, selenium and manganese. Not only is this soup great for vegans and vegetarians, but it also helps omnivorous people cleanse the digestive system and detoxify the body. uring a recent chat with a dear friend of mine, she inquired, as she often does, about my Bodhi Meditation practice. I had just finished a week-long Third Level Review Class, and I was eager to share my latest experiences. After listening to my enthusiastic update, my friend agreed that the Meditation Center is truly a home away from home. Our conversation prompted me to reflect on the nature of the Bodhi Center, and its importance to me and countless others. First and foremost, the Bodhi Center is, of course, a place of meditation. People gather from far and wide to meditate, to learn dharma (the truth), to hear Master JinBodhi and to receive his teachings. The presence of Bodhi Meditation in Western Canada has steadily expanded over the past several years. The Canada Bodhi Dharma Society, our umbrella organization, was founded in 2002, but the Bodhi Center was

not established until May 8, 2004 in Richmond, British Columbia, and has evolved from a modest space to a substantialand growinghaven of peace. I took my first steps at the Bodhi Center two years ago, and although I was alone in a sea of Chinese speakers, I felt surprisingly at home. The space was limited in those days, but a warm, welcoming ambience embraced me. I connected with many other meditators, and we would practice together, share our experiences and lunches, and give each other healing massage and lots of positive energy. In other words, we communicated in ways that transcended all language barriers. Now, many Chinese students are making an effort to learn English. The Bodhi Center underwent a major expansion in 2010. Our old meditation hall is now a multi-purpose social room, replaced by a hall with the capacity to hold two hundred people. The extensive renovations have also given us a Medicine Buddha Hall, offices and

ince 2005, the awe-inspiring power of Bodhi Meditation has been introduced to people in the United States by American International Puti (Bodhi) Dharma Society, a non-profit charitable organization. Master Guan-Hai, one of the most devoted students of Meditation Master JinBodhi, oversees the Los Angeles Bodhi Meditation Center. He has been working closely with Master JinBodhi for nearly twenty years, sharing the same goal of enriching lives by providing tools that enhance physical and psychological health. Within the Bodhi community, Guan-Hai is well-known for his superior healing power, which is capable of addressing both physical disease and mental illness. Countless people have been helped and cured by his incredible healing energy, giving rise to a solid faith among practitioners in the benefits of Bodhi Meditation. Under the leadership of Master Guan-Hai, in conjunction with other dedicated instructors, a variety of Meditation Classes and Retreats are held throughout the

A Fresh Breeze in a Bustling Metropolis

have benefited from Bodhi Meditation, and the first full-scale center was created in Flushing, Queens in January of 2009. Run by volunteers, the New York Bodhi Meditation Center hosts drop-in sessions, free introductions complete with energy healings, and large Health and Blessing Events. Instructors and volunteers continue to go out into communities, sometimes to shopping malls, helping those interested relieve stressrelated symptoms through Bodhi healing skills. On October 31, 2010, the head of the Center, Master Julie, hosted a Healthy Living and Healing Seminar at the Sheraton Hotel in Flushing. Hundreds of people from all over the tri-state area attended the event, and many reported mental calmness and a release from pain. A long-time sufferer of insomnia fell into a sound sleep during the healing session, and awoke later feeling energetic and surprised. The New York Bodhi Meditation Center is now looking for a more spacious location to accommodate bigger classes. The expansion is due to the recognition the center has received from New Yorkers who seek a fresh breeze in their bustling lives. Indeed, theyve found it. Known as a key financial and cultural hub, Americans and immigrants, artists and bankers, single people and married folks pursue dreams on New Yorks exciting, crowded streets. From the sprawling greenery of Central Park to the calming flow of the Hudson River, the historical significance of Ellis Island and the rich cultural diversity present throughout, fascinating beauty is everywhere. However, the demanding pace and innumerable pressures of the city prevent many people from fully enjoying all of the superb sights and experiences available, and the rise and fall of the stock market or the fight to hail a cab often take precedence. Thus, its not surprising that many New Yorkers struggle with stressrelated problems.

At the New York Bodhi Meditation Center, new students often complain of headaches, insomnia, depression, chronic fatigue and other conditions common to modern life. The stress of life is frequently projected onto children, and challenges such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (adHd) and autism have become increasingly prevalent. The New York Bodhi Meditation Center has helped to alleviate the physical and mental problems of many, assisting adults in regaining balance and restoring peace to families with children who have struggled with adHd and developmental disorders. Milpitas Bailian (White Lotus) Bodhi Meditation Center boasts burgeoning membership. The San Francisco Bodhi Meditation Center and the Milpitas Bailian Bodhi Meditation Center serve as beacons to those who seek a rewarding life filled with good health and joy. Instructors and volunteers work hard to ensure that all members and guests feel welcome and at home. Within two years, over a thousand people have benefited from the Meditation Programs offered in the two Centers. Stories of practitioners who have recovered their health continue to spread far and wide. Master JinBodhi visited the Bay Area in January of 2010 and a New Year Blessing Puja (dharma event) was held at Foster City, where more than seven hundred people joined in the celebration. On October 17, 2010, a public Blessing of Energy and Illumination was held at the World Journal Activity Center in Milbrae City. The Centers are honored to serve the community with loving kindness and compassion, striving to embody the higher consciousness that Bodhi Meditation cultivates. Everyone is welcome to partake in the Meditation Classes and activities in the two Centers. San Francisco Bodhi Meditation Center


Bodhi Meditation was first brought to the San Francisco Bay Area by core students Fa-Ying and Susan Chen in 2008, in the form of a two-day Introductory Class. Without a dedicated place to practice, many of the meditation sessions in those early days were held in Fa-Ying's home. Master JinBodhis vision of a Bodhi Center in beautiful and diverse San Francisco came to fruition not long after. Master Jue-Wu, a long-time student of Master JinBodhi, led the development of the San Francisco center. Through her enormous efforts, together with those of other Bodhi Meditation pioneers, the areas first Center opened at the corner of Taraval Street and 39th Avenue, in the Sunset District, on July 26, 2008 amidst great fanfare. ilicon Valley Bodhi Meditation Center came into being in 2008, and since January of 2009 Meditation Classes have been taught in community centers year-round. In May of 2010, Silicon Valley Bodhi Meditation was recognized by the California Legislature Assembly for its community service at Sunnyvale-Cupertino Adult and Community Education Center. Its commitment was also applauded by the local school district. The student body varies in age, ethnic origin and religious belief, but all meditation practitioners incorporate the benefits of Bodhi Meditation into their lives and pass along the teachings to friends and family. Many have reaped life-changing rewards, including an eightyfour-year-old who transformed from a cancer patient into a joyful, energetic man. Cupertino Senior Center is nestled in a beautiful natural environment, and from the meditation classroom a view of a tranquil duck pond lends an ambience of peace and oneness with nature. Meditation of Purity (The)


The static (motionless) visualization practice called The Meditation of Purity, created and taught by Meditation Master JinBodhi as part of Bodhi Meditation.

Self-cultivation
The development of ones mind to more enlightened and developed states through meditation practices.

Spontaneous Fasting Meditation


Either static or dynamic mental exercises designed to benefit the practitioner mentally, physically and/ or spiritually. A phenomenon by which a practitioner of meditation suddenly loses the desire to eat, but remains healthy, energetic and active. Literally, it is a spontaneous, involuntary fast that may last a short or seemingly miraculous period of time.

Bodhi
The greatest state of mental and spiritual awakening: enlightenment. People from the Chinese Buddhist tradition will know the word, transcribed from Sanskrit, as pt ; Westerners will know it transcribed as bodhi. In Sanskrit, it refers to the supreme state of self-cultivation: a state in which one has a true understanding of the natural laws of the universe. Derived from bodhi (meaning awakening, perfect knowledge, or enlightenment), a variety of Sanskrit terms have been absorbed by English (e.g., Buddha, Buddhism and bodhisattva). that all sentient beings are connected, and that suffering for one is a reflection of suffering for all. In this context, compassion is a Universal force that neither discriminates nor personalizes: it exists equally for all without consideration of individual circumstance. This theory of compassion is derived from two Sanskrit wordsmaitr and karun. Respectively, these mean to give happiness and to remove suffering. To truly accomplish these goals, one requires praj (a wisdom usually gained through meditation).

A set gesture or position of the hands and/or body used for a variety of traditional purposes, representing specific meanings; often used in meditation.

Meditation that involves no physical motion.

Universal Love Natural Law Traditionally dharma


A natural law, or philosophy, with regard to the functions of the Universe and right living. Right living, in most contexts, means living so as to not be in conflict with internal or external environmentsliving harmoniously in both the psychological/spiritual and the physical realms. As greater and greater harmony between self (internal) and other (external) is achieved, the distinction between the two disappears until they are viewed as a unity. In Eastern traditional thought, the word dharma represents this concept. Dharma may also represent a wisdom regarding natural law; if natural law is clearly grasped, right living becomes possible; and right living is the way to true understanding (enlightenment). Due to this chain of progression, dharma may broadly refer to any or all of the following: natural law, right living, enlightenment, or teachings regarding these three concepts. In the Buddhist tradition, the ideology of Universal love, or compassion, is added to this basic definition of dharma and is appropriately termed "buddhadharma". Equivalent to the concept of compassion, but less traditional, and less connected to Buddhist traditional theory. Please see Compassion for more detailed information.
