The key takeaways are that the teacher wants to establish a democratic and encouraging classroom environment where students and teachers both have rights and responsibilities. She plans to model respect and set clear expectations for behavior.

The teacher's role in classroom meetings is to begin discussions, model respectful listening and speaking skills, monitor participation, review rules and procedures, and show equality to all students.

The teacher plans to use a 'Superstar' bulletin board to manage student behavior. Students will earn or lose 'Starbucks' depending on their behavior, which can be redeemed at the end of the week. Warnings and consequences are clearly outlined.

MY CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN

PERSEPHONI MOORE

My Classroom Management Philosophy In my classroom management philosophy I want to ensure that I, as a future teacher, use methods and strategies to encourage a positive environment that all students can learn and participate in. I have a right to teach as a teacher and my students have a right to learn. My classroom will demonstrate how my students and I will communicate in a democratic, encouraging classroom environment. I want to model respect in the classroom for my students in the classroom. I, as the teacher, will have the responsibility to set a positive tone for my classroom and my students behavior. Lee and Marlene Canter believe that students and teachers have rights in the classroom. They believe that teachers who fail to teach and who deny students opportunities to learn usually have an inability to manage or control the class. (Manning, Bucher) Being a teacher, having control of your classroom is essential. Anything preventing a teacher from teaching should be addressed immediately, for example, a student who is being disruptive will be removed from the group of students who want to learn. In order for teachers to maintain their right to teach and their students right to learn, they must establish classroom rules, rewards or consequences, and demonstrate what is expected of their students. My classroom will be a democratic learning environment. They will participate in making classroom rules; vote on what rewards they would like to have, and vote on many activities they would like to do. Rudolph Dreikurs supports teaching in the democratic fashion. It gives students and teachers opportunities to work toward common goals in the classroom. Giving the students encouragement is very important. To be a democratic teacher you must model respect by treating students as individuals and encourage the students rather than giving the student praise. According to Dreikurs, teachers should use more encouragement to boost confidence and self-esteem and less praise, because students can become dependent on the praise. (Manning, Bucher) I want my students to feel encouraged to boost their self-esteem rather than using praise and it have a negative effect on my students in the long run. According to Jacob Kounin, teachers must look at what they do and that instructional actions and behaviors affect student behavior. In the classroom, the teacher is the model that represents what is expected in the classroom. A teacher who models respect in their classroom will have students that give respect to their teacher and peers and classroom misbehaviors will be at a minimal. However, a teacher who shows disrespect toward students will have a lot more misbehaving students in their classroom. Teachers, through instructional actions can a have strong influences on students misbehaviors. By consistently using instructional techniques that promote and encourage learners best behaviors, teachers can address common misbehaviors that are experienced in many contemporary schools. (Manning, Bucher) Constantly reminding students what behavior is expected of them will diminish the number of misbehaviors in the classroom. My management philosophy shows that students will have an encouraging, respectful, and positive learning environment. As the teacher, I will set a positive tone in my classroom. I will model respect and behaviors that I expect all of my students to follow. I will give the students, as a group, a chance to participate in creating classroom rules and creating classroom rules. Our students may have the right to learn and we, as teachers may have the right to teach, however, that does not mean we cannot learn from our students every day. As a whole, we will create a classroom environment, in which we all can learn and grow from.

Welcome to Miss Moores 3rd grade Superstar class, Rm. 19! Yes! It is that time of
year again! BACK TO SCHOOL! My name is Persephoni Moore and I will be your childs teacher this year. I graduated from Nevada State College with my Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and I hope to receive my Masters Degree from UNLV in the next few years. This will be my first year teaching and I am ready to fill my students with knowledge. Teaching has always been my passion. I can assure you, that I will do my very best to always keep my classroom interesting, safe, and fun! I love to sing, dance and be creative, so my classroom will always be engaging. Knowledge is a very important aspect to me. I plan to pass down the knowledge that I have received to my students. I have always believed that the more knowledge that students obtain, the richer they can become not in terms of money, but richer in terms of rewards and achievements. I want to give every single one of my students a sense of belonging in my classroom and many opportunities to succeed. I will keep my students motivated so that they can reach the many goals that come with learning. In order to do that, I will create a learning environment to meet the many requirements that my students have and do whatever is necessary to meet these requirements. Below are some materials needed for a productive school year: One 1-inch binder Dividers (5 should be plenty!) No. 2 Pencils (We start multiplication and division this year!) Pens or Erasable Pens--Black and/or Blue and Red (Writing papers will be fun!) One 70 page writing notebook (Make the cover fun! I have puppies on mine! ) Crayons, Markers, or Colored pencils (I LOVE Classroom art!) One of these items ( tissue, hand sanitizer, or hand soap) One reading book of your choice (We also have a nice library in class!) Any parents who have any questions or suggestions to help keep our students learning and motivated, I will gladly address them. I am available one hour before and after school, or by appointment, to meet with parents and students. My contact information is below. Parents who are involved have a wonderful opportunity to be active in their childs schooling. After all, I do play a big role in their learning as their teacher, but you as parents play an even bigger role. I look forward to seeing all my students on the first day of school! I dont forget to mark your calendars for September 20, 2010 for Open House from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.! I cant wait to get the year started! Persephoni Moore [email protected] Cell phone: (702) 267-7544

Management Procedures
Since the theme of my classroom will be stars, I will use my Superstar bulletin board to manage my students behavior. On my Superstar board, all of my students are color coded according to which color group they belong to. This board can manage individual behaviors as well as group behaviors. This is helpful so that I am not punishing a group for an individuals misbehavior .Each students star will be Velcro-ed to the board so if a student were to misbehave, they will be able to easily move their star to the appropriate place on the board. However, those students who are not misbehaving will be able to receive Starbucks for good behavior and following directions throughout the day. According to my illustration, here are the procedures that will go with my Superstar board: 1. Everyday students will start off with a clean-slate. All students stars begin in the $10 spot. Students will be able to receive extra earnings throughout the day for good behavior. 2. If a student or a group misbehaves or does not follow the rules, they will receive two verbal warnings before their star, or stars are moved to their group color and they will lose a total of $1 Starbuck, from the $10 Starbucks, for the day. 3. If a student or a group misbehaves or does not follow the rules a second time, they will lose a yet another $5 Starbucks and will lose a special privilege for the day, for example, Loss of Computer time. 4. If a student or a group misbehaves or does not follow the rules a third time, they will receive no Starbucks for the day and a call and/or a note to be signed by the parent or guardian will be the consequences for the student or students. 5. Any and all students have a chance to move back up in the to the $10 spot if their behavior improves throughout the day and I see it fit to do so. 6. At the end of each day, students or groups will receive their amount Starbucks to be used at the end of each week. Starbucks can be used for treasure chest or a classroom auction on an item I bring in at the beginning of each week. An example of my management plan, according to the example is Megan in the green group. As you can see, Megan has already had two warnings for disrupting students learning and the teachers teaching. Megan will only receive $4 Starbucks today. If Megan were to receive her third and final warning, she will not receive any Starbucks today and a call or note home will be her consequence for misbehaving. However, even though Megan may have two warnings for being disruptive in class and has a loss of a special privilege, if she were to come into class after lunch, gets right to work, and improves her behavior over all throughout the day, I, or she, will be able to move her star back to only losing $1 Starbuck for the day and possibly getting it back to the $10 Starbucks spot.
