Wildly Jumbo, Wildly Creative
Responding to the provinces approval of the Master De-
velopment Plan for Jumbo Glacier Resort, the West Koote-
nay Coalition for Jumbo Wild! is once again getting active.
Te coalition is composed of local environmental, natural-
ist, outdoors and social justice groups.
At the Sunday, March 25, rally in Nelson, over 200
people came out to express their support for Jumbo Wild!
Te coalition invites other groups to join them and for in-
dividuals to get creative in their response to the govern-
ment approval of Jumbos Master Plan. Already, a choir
performance is in the works for Jumbo Pass this summer
and an art book project is gaining momentum as well.
Te resort development proposal would put over 6,000 beds
into the Jumbo valley as well as 23 lifs and all the amenities of
a small city. In polls, petitions, and letters, thousands of Koo-
tenay residents have voiced their support for Jumbo Wild!
said K.Linda Kivi. Now its time to get creative to help us acti-
vate the public and raise funds. Kivi is the editor of the an-
thology Te Purcell Suite: Upholding the Wild which continues
to sell as a fundraiser in support of the Jumbo Wild! campaign.
To join the Coalition, call David at the EcoSociety, 250-

Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival
Despite having long chosen the audio format to com-
municate all issues food, past producer/host Jon Stein-
man of the Deconstructing Dinner radio show/podcast
was always impressed at the immense power of flm to
inspire and stimulate change.
Coming this April, Steinman will be launching the
2012 Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival. Te festival
will feature six flms on food spread out over three even-
ings at two locations. An oyster-themed evening will en-
sure some good food is shared too!
Headlining the festival on Tursday, April 5, 6:30 pm
at the Capitol Teatre will be the sneak peek of the an-
ticipated Deconstructing Dinner television-web series
which Steinman has been working on alongside former
Kootenay resident and award-winning producer Declan
ODriscoll. Tis short pilot episode for the series features
celebrated Canadian chef Michael Stadtlander. Titled:
Harmful or Hopeful Ham? Te production examines the
risks of the industrial production of pork and features
farmers who are choosing a diferent path by paying
greater attention to issues of food safety, animal welfare,
human health and favour. Te flm is being presented by
Kootenay Co-op Radio. Tis will be Deconstructing Din-
ners frst time on the big screen!
Presented by BiBo, Truck Farm is another great short to
catch. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Ian Cheney set out to plant
a vegetable garden in the bed of his grandfathers 1986
Dodge truck! Te mobile garden project soon grew when
Ian and collaborator Curt Ellis turned Truck Farm into
a 20-member CSA (community supported agriculture)
project, marketing their produce to residents of Manhat-
tan and Brooklyn. From the co-creators of King Corn,
Truck Farm tells the story of an old Dodge, a new kind of
farming, and the future of food in the city.
Te festivals only Canadian feature-length documen-
tary is a humbling and greatly important insight into the
challenges faced by the many young farmers across Can-
ada who have chosen the noble role of feeding the rest of
us. To Make a Farm (8:30 pm) features a season in the life
of two Ontario couples and an intrepid young Manitoba
man whose challenges and daily setbacks remind us of
the importance of supporting young farmers here in the
Kootenays and abroad. Presented by the Kootenay Coun-
try Store Co-op.
With the bulk of the diet for most Kootenay resi-
dents being of terrestrial origin, its easy to forget about
our marine food sources and their role in maintaining
healthy oceans and a healthy planet. On Wednesday,
April 18, 7 pm at the Royal on Baker, an oyster-themed
evening is planned to direct attention to this sought afer
yet poorly understood keystone species. Te evening will
open with a short from flmmaker Emily Driscoll. Shell-
shocked follows eforts to prevent the extinction of wild
oyster reefs, which keep our oceans healthy by fltering
water and engineering ecosystems. Also in attendance
will be Kootenay resident Brent Te Oyster Man Pet-
kau who will share his passion for the oyster and why
he cultivates and harvests oysters on Cortes Island. Brent
will also be ofering a two-buck-a-shuck oyster bar and
the Nelson Brewing Company is pairing their Oatmeal
Stout with the oysters.
Two feature-length flms fll the schedule for Tursday,
April 19 at the Capitol Teatre. With plastic having be-
come such a staple ingredient of our food (system), no
flm better captures the absurdity of our cultural love af-
fair with plastics than Bag It (6:30 pm). Winning awards
all over the United States, Bag It follows everyman Jeb
Berrier as he navigates our plastic world. When Jeb fnds
out he and his partner are expecting a child, his plastic
odyssey becomes a truly personal one. Tis is both an
entertaining and change-provoking flm being presented
by the Kootenay Country Store Co-op.
Rounding of the festival at the Capitol is a perfect
opening to the planting season. Presented by the Koote-
nay Bakery Caf, Urban Roots (8:30 pm) is produced by
Leila Conners (Te 11th Hour) and Mathew Schmid. Te
flm follows the urban farming phenomenon in Detroit
and speaks to a nation grappling with collapsed indus-
trial towns and the need to forge a diferent future. In
many ways, the urban farmers in Detroit are like most
of us in that we are all experiencing the painful transi-
tion from the industrial, centralized world to a post-in-
dustrial world in which the jobs are changing, the econ-
omy is changing, the neighborhoods are changing and it
seems like we have no control over the outcome. Tis is a
hopeful story demonstrating how we can all take control
of our food supply.
Im tremendously excited to host this flm festival here
in the Kootenays, says Jon Steinman. Tere is so much
passion, knowledge and skills found among the people
here that spells out a promising future of good food for all
of us. Coming together to be inspired together and create
this new reality is what this flm festival is all about.
More information on the festival can be found online at
www.deconstructingdinner.com. Tickets are available at
Otter Books and the Capitol Teatre in Nelson.

are welcome to this program, but pre-
registration is recommended.

within the body and proper appli-
cation methods. Te April 30 ses-
sion sees participants receiving a
fve part essential oil kit. Tey learn
about these oils and how to incor-

cuss their concerns and options in
a community setting.

presentations, followed by questions
and an open discussion. Te panel

Kootenay Lake
Boating Survey
Human, plant and ani-
mal life, and social de-
velopment are all in-
conceivable without the
presence of quality water
and healthy aquatic eco-
systems. Residents, vaca-
tioners, tourists, fishers,
and boaters all recognize
the inherent and unique
beauty of Kootenay Lake
and the West Arm. As an
important habitat to doz-
ens of species of animals
and plant life, a source of
drinking water for thou-
sands, and a year-round
recreation and tourism
destination, Kootenay
Lake is vital to life, well-
being, and health.
When ecosystems break
down, and water quality de-
teriorates, the benefits for
the population are reduced
accordingly. Water has no
substitute. Without careful
stewardship, Kootenay Lake
is vulnerable to negative
impacts of human activ-
ities, including boating.
Kootenay Lake Sus-
tainable Boating Society
(KLSB) is a non-profit
citizens group focused on
sustainability of boating
on Kootenay Lake, includ-
ing protecting the mar-
ine environment in and
around Kootenay Lake.
The Society is currently
conducting a feasibility
study regarding installing
sewage pump-out sta-
tions on the Lake and the
West Arm to help boaters
protect the lake environ-
ment by preventing the
discharge of boat sewage
into the lake. Many other
jurisdictions already have
mandatory no discharge
protocols in place in rec-
ognition of the import-
ance of maintaining the
health of their waterways.
To date, the only no-dis-
charge location on Koote-
nay Lake is Pilot Bay.
Increases in tourist visits
and activity on the lake,
and a trend to more and
bigger boats, enhances
the local economy; how-
ever they can also have a
direct impact on the en-
vironmental health of the
lake. Some of these im-
pacts may be controlled,
regulated, or directed so
that these possibly harm-
ful effects can be avoided;
where resource integrity
is maintained or even en-
hanced, all users of the
lake will benefit.
With support from
RDCK, Kootenay Lake
Sailing Association, and
Kuskanook Harbour a
boaters survey has been
developed. Boaters are
invited to visit www.klsb.
org to complete the sur-
vey and add comments or
questions.

Earth Matters ECO Centre Closed
Te Earth Matters ECO Centre, a social enterprise of
Nelson CARES Society, has of cially closed its doors.
Earth Matters will remain as an active program of Nelson
CARES Society, and currently maintains two commun-
ity gardens, a thriving recycling pick-up service and de-
velops educational community projects.
We came to a point where the ECO Centre was un-
able to sustain itself without additional funding. We are
happy about the great work that happened at the ECO
Centre, such as our retail training program and last years
compost education project. We are very thankful for the
support we received. Now, we look forward to developing
more exciting educational programs and ensuring the
success of our current programs, like our newly expanded
recycling pick up service, comments Alison Roy, Man-
ager of Earth Matters.
Tis summer, Earth Matters plans to ofer composting
information and support to the community at the vari-
ous Nelson markets. We are still committed to providing
information and assistance to the community on com-
posting, waste reduction and local community garden-
ing, explains Roy.

Tanning Beds Restrictions
Te Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, applauds
the announcement made by the Honourable Health Min-
ister, Michael de Jong, to restrict access to tanning beds
for young people under the age of 18. Te regulation is
anticipated to take efect this fall.
Tis is another step forward in cancer prevention,
said Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, CEO Bar-
bara Kaminsky. Te decision to introduce this healthy
public policy has the support of the majority of British
Columbians, and will help protect young people from get-
ting skin cancer later in life.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Can-
ada and over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the
sun and indoor tanning equipment is the major cause of
skin cancer. Te good news is that skin cancer is also one
of the most preventable cancers.
Youth are particularly vulnerable: the use of indoor tan-
ning equipment before the age of 35 increases the risk of
melanoma by 75 per cent. Melanoma skin cancer the
most serious form of skin cancer - is one of the most com-
monly diagnosed cancers in youth between the ages of
15 and 29. Further, the incidence rates of melanoma skin
cancer are increasing each year.
Parental consent does not work: the Canadian Cancer
Society has been calling on the BC government to imple-
ment province-wide legislation banning those under the
age of 18 from using artifcial tanning equipment because:
Indoor tanning is especially harmful to young people;
Public education alone is not working
voluntary guidelines are not working;
Parental consent does not work.
Te local mobilization of Tanning is Out ambassadors
across BC played a role in prompting the BC government
to ban teens under 18 from using tanning beds. Many
people took this issue to heart and into the schools.
Canadian Cancer Society Health Promotion Coordin-
ators worked with local youth volunteers in 18 high
schools in 2011 to develop and implement the Tanning is
Out campaign during the spring of 2011. Over 3,000
grade 12 students pledged to be tan-free for prom or
graduation in 2011 and the Canadian Cancer Society is
confdent the number of students who pledge to be tan-
free in 2012 will be much higher.
Te Canadian Cancer Society fghts cancer by doing
everything we can to prevent cancer, save lives and sup-
port people living with cancer. Join the fght! Go to www.
fghtback.ca to fnd out how you can help. When you
want to know more about cancer, visit www.cancer.ca or
call our toll-free bilingual Cancer Information Service at

New Afordable Housing
As a result of federal and provincial investments, a
new program, the Afordable Rental Housing initiative
(ARHi), will soon be available in the Columbia Basin re-
gion for households in need. Columbia Basin Trust (CBT)
has also partnered with the province in this initiative to
deliver essential afordable rental housing.
Trough the Canada-British Columbia Agreement for
Investment in Afordable Housing 2011-2014, the Gov-
ernment of Canada and the Province of British Columbia
are providing a combined investment of $5 million over
three years to support new afordable rental housing pro-
jects in communities across the Columbia Basin. Trough
a separate funding agreement with the province, CBT is
contributing a further $5 million to this initiative.
Our government is committed to developing and im-
plementing local solutions to local housing challenges,
said the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian
Heritage and Of cial Languages and Minister Responsible
for British Columbia on behalf of the Honourable Diane
Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Develop-
ment and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corporation (CMHC). Trough this new pro-
gram, seniors and families of Columbia Basin will have
access to afordable rental housing that meets their needs.
Tis is a wonderful announcement for our region, said
Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. Columbia Basin
Trust is such an important player in all of our communities
and it is gratifying to see the province working so well and
so collaboratively with CBT on such an important issue.
Details on how to apply for the Afordable Rental Hous-
ing initiative and request for proposals for the procure-
ment of potential afordable rental housing projects will
be available in spring 2012.
Our partnership with the provincial government rep-
resents a unique opportunity for CBT to help address a
priority issue for a number of Basin communities, said
Garry Merkel, CBT board chair. Were excited this part-
nership can help communities make afordable rental
housing projects a reality.
Te Canada-British Columbia Agreement for Investment
in Afordable Housing 2011-2014, signed in July 2011, con-
frms the remaining three years of BCs fve-year allocation
of the Government of Canadas 2008 commitment of more
than $1.9 billion to improve and build new afordable hous-
ing and help the homeless. Tis means a further $90 million
in federal funding for British Columbians. With matching
provincial contributions of $90 million, a total combined
investment of $180 million helps to support afordable
housing programs for BC residents.
Te Government of Canada, through CMHC, will in-
vest more than $2 billion in housing this year. Of this
amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of almost
615,000 households living in existing social housing. In
British Columbia, this represents some 71,000 house-
holds. To fnd out more about the Government of Canada
and CMHC programs, call CMHC at 1-800-668-2642 or

When To
Replace A Childs
Car Seat
Most childrens car
seats have an expiry date
stamped on them. If yours
is past its date, replace it.
Cant fnd the date? Check
the car seats manual.
You should also replace a
childrens car seat or boost-
er seat:
If youve had a collision
and your seat was in the car
at the time - even if your
child was not riding in the
car during the crash.
If the childrens car seat
shows signs of signifcant
wear and tear or damage.
When the child out-
grows or becomes too
heavy for your current seat.
Check the manufacturers
instructions for height and
weight limits.
Remember, there may
be another model of re-
straint for the same stage
that will still ft your child.
