Teachers
lift ban on
volunteer
action
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Washington Twp. Sun
After six months, their mes-
sage was clear.
The 870 or so teachers and
secretaries in the Washington
Township School District de-
cided at the beginning of the
school year they would not vol-
unteer their time with ex-
tracurricular activities.
Even though many staff
members enjoy pitching in at
school events and chaperoning
dances and trips, the group
collectively decided to enact a
no volunteering job action as
they waited for a contract to be
settled.
The Washington Township
Education Association repre-
sents the teachers and secre-
taries in the district.
NJEA and WTEA
spokesperson Kathy Coulibaly
said staff has been without a
contract since July 1, 2010.
The goal in enacting a no
volunteering action, Coulibaly
said, was to make administra-
tors, parents and the commu-
nity aware of the hard work
many teachers and secretaries
contribute outside of the class-
room.
Our members hope that
the community has been made
sufficiently aware of the bar-
gaining crisis through this
and other job actions, said
Special to The Sun
Guests peruse the tables and displays at the 2010 Earth Day event held in Washington Lake Park. The event was rained out last year. This
year, the event will host more than 150 vendors, as well as food, games and activities for the family.

Earth Day event, set to be held at
Washington Lake Park on Satur-
day, April 14.
Were hoping to show people
that container you used once or
your jeans that are too short you
can use them in a different way.
Its about keeping what youve al-
ready got, said Anne Hastings, a
volunteer member of the Wash-
ington Township Environmental
Commission, who helped organ-
ize the event.
Earth Day is in its 22nd year in
the township, and this year, more
than 150 vendors are expected to
set up shop in the park.

4 THE WASHINGTON TWP. SUN APRIL 11-17, 2012
WTEA President Camy Kobylins-
ki. We take great pride in the
fact that the WTEA has continued
to provide an excellent education
despite the fact that we are work-
ing without a new contract.
The action was lifted last week,
Coulibaly said, because teachers
and secretaries felt their message
had been received and were ready
to get back to volunteering, espe-
cially with many end-of-the-
year activities lined up for stu-
dents.
This decision is not ever taken
lightly. But people felt disrespect-
ed and not appreciated,
Coulibaly said. Teachers want to
help out and they wanted to go
back and do it. They felt they had
gotten enough information out
there for people to appreciate and
understand what they do.
A few events were cancelled
this school year because of the ac-
tion, but sports teams and clubs
mostly remained intact because
coaches and club advisers typical-
ly receive a stipend for their
work, Coulibaly said.
The WTEA, along with the dis-
tricts board of education, are
currently in a fact-finding
process to try and reach a con-
tract agreement.
The state-appointed fact-finder
has met with both sides on Jan. 17
and on Feb 21.
The first formal fact-finding
hearing is scheduled for May 7.
If fact-finding yields no con-
tract results, the two sides will
enter into another phase of bar-
gaining.
Coulibaly said the WTEA
hopes to have the contract settled
this summer.
The sooner the better. We
went through the 2010-2011 and
2011-2012 school years without a
contract; lets not start 2012-2013
without one either, Coulibaly
said.

6 THE WASHINGTON TWP. SUN APRIL 11-17, 2012
in our opinion
W
hile virtually no one antici-
pates property values to
skyrocket anytime soon,
there are signs that the housing mar-
ket is beginning to get back on its feet.
Prices are up. Sales are solid. And
while foreclosures and short sales will
keep a lid on prices for some time, it
appears the market is moving in the
right direction. A report from The As-
sociated Press cited the National Asso-
ciation of Realtors point that Febru-
arys sales pace was the second high-
est since May 2010.
So what does that matter? Obviously
it matters a lot if youre buying or sell-
ing a home. But, even if youre not,
your homes value affects how you
handle your budget.
From a practical side, a higher
value might allow you to tap into your
homes equity. You might spend that
extra cash on home improvements, for
example, which helps to boost the
economy.
A homes value also has a psycho-
logical impact. Even though your
home might not be on the market,
there is a sense of security knowing
that you have your homes value to fall
back on if times get tough. That, in
turn, might prompt you to feel more
comfortable about buying new furni-
ture, taking a vacation, etc. Again, all
of these things help to spur the econo-
my.
To issue an all is well with the
housing market proclamation would
be premature. The aforementioned
distressed properties will continue to
be a burden. Credit is still tight. Inter-
est rates remain low, but could rise, sti-
fling a robust recovery.
But, hopefully, the days of watching
your homes value plummet are over,
or about over. The economy is showing
signs of growing albeit at a modest
pace. The reports indicate that more
people once again are looking at home
ownership as they feel better about
their employment status.
All of which is good news for home-
owners.
Home, sweeter home?
The numbers show that the real estate market might be stabilizing
Maybe the worst is over
Its not yet time to pronounce the
housing market as cured, but recent
reports indicate that it perhaps has
stabilized. Thats good news for both
homeowners and an economy that
continues to grow.

A 56-year-old woman was pro-
nounced dead at a hospital after
a firefighter carried her from a
bedroom of her burning Wash-
ington Township home shortly
after 12 a.m. on April 7, accord-
ing to the Gloucester County
Prosecutors office.
The woman was identified as
Darlene J. Starett, a widow who
lived with her son in the bi-level
home at 77 Golfview Drive in the
Turnersville section of the
township. Her son was at work
in King of Prussia, Pa., at the
time of the fire. There were no
other occupants of the home.
Starett was pronounced dead
at Washington Memorial Hospi-
tal, Washington Township, at
1:11 a.m. An autopsy by the
Gloucester County Medical Ex-
aminer concluded the cause of
death was carbon monoxide and
smoke inhalation and the man-
ner of death was accidental.
There were no other injuries
resulting from the fire.
The fire, which heavily dam-
aged the first floor of the home,
was reported by a neighbor at
12:01 a.m.
The cause of the fire is unde-
termined pending an inspection
by an electrical engineer. The
Gloucester County Fire Mar-
shal and the Gloucester County
Prosecutor's Office are investi-
gating.
