r transition to our school: Meeting with new students to understand the personal challenges they face and provide teachers with ideas to be more effective during students transition. Advising parents when necessary. Promoting organizational features and resources ( Peace Patrol / Tribes) that can help younger students resolve their conflicts during recess time Observing students and consulting and advising colleagues on matters regarding students behavior or learning issues and formulating effective interventions. Offering workshops to parents on child development, transition and other relevant topics. Screening students when required and testing students when outside testing services are not an option Participating in child study and learning support team meetings Creating pro-active involvement of all students around topics of personal growth, cross-cultural understanding and conflict resolution. Developing and implementing programs that proactively address issues around development and transition as it relates to good mental health; for example: building a strong identity, becoming resilient, focus on problem solving. Given our present curriculum work we will begin to explore these topics through embedding them into the curriculum. The counselor would help to create, model and/or coteach with the classroom teacher.

Responsibilities Primarily, the Early Childhood counsellor is a professional who promotes the personal and social development of all students. He or she has responsibility for facilitating learning and emotional needs and leads by supporting students, teachers, and families in implementing strategies so all students can access the ISB curriculum and find school and personal success.
Personal Counselling Providing emergency counseling for the ES and ECC population (behavior concerns, transition issues, anxiety, grief, trauma, family break-up) and making referrals to out-side professionals. Serving as a student advocate, articulating specific concerns and see that students receive the necessary support. Providing personal counseling on matters regarding psycho-social and behavioral issues with students for who an outside service is no option Facilitating conflict resolution and crisis intervention when needed Counseling and advising parents on parenting issue and child guidance Liaising with outside services: Referring to and keeping contact with support services in the community, including psychiatrists and psychologists who work in different institutions and who come from a variety of cultural and language back-grounds. Faculty Liaison/Resource/Support Advising, and supporting teachers, students and parents in alignment with student needs and the school mission Consulting with Belgian institutions to know about local laws and seek advice when deemed necessary. Supporting teachers as they explore areas of concern and if necessary finding outside support for their identified needs. Facilitating professional effectiveness and avoiding burnout. Being a resource for administrators Liaising as a core member of our multidisciplinary learning support team Providing professional development when required. They focus around mental health, cross-cultural awareness and integration. Sharing articles relevant to education and child development with teachers and parents Being on call in the event of a crisis
