About UNWTO
The UNWTO (United Nation World Tourism Organization) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism. UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide. UNWTO generates market knowledge, promotes competitive and sustainable tourism policies and instruments. UNWTOs membership includes 155 countries, 6 Associate Members and over 400 Affiliate Members.
13 December, 2012 was chosen as the symbolic arrival day of the one-billionth tourist which was celebrated by UNWTO Secretary-General in Spain, home to UNWTO headquarters.

It is one of the few activities which can provide a solution to falling income levels & lesser job opportunities in the total areas leading to an urbanization syndrome in the rural areas.

Tourism has the potential to not only be the economy driver, but also become an effective tool for poverty alleviation and ensuring growth with equity Tourism contribution to Indian GDP is 5.92%, and employment is 7.9% providing 39,3 million jobs. The number of foreign tourist arrivals in India has grown to 6.29 million in 2011, an annual rate of growth of 8.9%.
