Introduction

Theheartis amuscularorganin humans.

It pumpsbloodthrough theblood vesselsof

thecirculatory system.

The heart is located in the middle compartment

of themediastinumin thechest.

LOCATION OF HEART

Structure of Heart

Our heart is 4 chambered.

There are two chambers on each side

of the heart.

Each chamber is separated by a valve,

which is a flap of tissue that opens and
closes to keep blood flowing in the right
direction.

The Human
Heart

Chambers

The heart has 4 chambers.

The two upper ones are the Atria, the receiving

chambers, the two lower are ventricles, the
discharging chambers.

The right side of the heart receives de-oxygenated

blood from the body and pump it to the lungs.

The left side of the heart receives oxygenated

blood from the lungs and pump it to the body .

Valves

The heart has four valves, which separate its

chambers.

The valves ensure blood flows in the correct

direction through the heart and prevents backflow.

Between the right atrium and the right ventricle is

the tricuspid valve.

Between the left atrium and left ventricle is

themitral valve.

The semilunarpulmonary valveis located at

the base of thepulmonary artery.

The semilunaraortic valveis at the base of the

aorta.

With the atria and major vessels

removed, all four valves are
clearly visible

Blood Vessels

Vena Cava brings the de-oxygenated blood into the right

atrium.

Pulmonary Artery takes the de-oxygenated blood to the lungs

from right ventricle.

Pulmonary Vein brings oxygenated into the left atrium.

Aorta takes out oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the
body.

Double Circulation

We utilize adouble circulatory system.

This means that we have two loops in our

body in which blood circulates.

One isoxygenated, meaning oxygen rich,

and the other is deoxygenated, which
means it has little to no oxygen, but a lot of
carbon dioxide.
Double circulation

The Cycle of the Heart

The blood in our bodies is used over and over

again.

Its movement through the heart and around the

body is called circulation and can be viewed as a
cycle.

Beginning at the left side of your heart, fresh,

clean oxygen-rich blood is pumped around
our bodies. The cells throughout our bodies take
the oxygen from the blood and use it as fuel to
work and grow.

The Cycle of the Heart

The cells create carbon dioxide and other

wastes that must be removed to keep the
cells healthy.

The blood is responsible for picking up

the waste, delivering it to the kidneys where,
except for the carbon dioxide, it is removed
from the body.

The kidneys are

responsible for
cleansing of blood.

The Cycle of the Heart

Then the blood, with its load of carbon dioxide,

returns to the right side of the heart.
The right side of the heart pumps the blood to the
lungs to get rid of the carbon dioxide and to pick
up fresh oxygen.
The oxygen-rich blood goes back to the left side of
the heart and is then pumped around the body to
complete the cycle.
This all happens in less than a minute!!

Amazing Facts about Heart

A

human heart is roughly the size of a large fist.

The

heart weighs between about 10 to 12 ounces (280 to 340

grams) in men and 8 to 10 ounces (230 to 280 grams) in
women.

The

heart beats about 100,000 times per day (about 3 billion

beats in a lifetime).

An

adult heart beats about 60 to 80 times per minute.

New-borns'

hearts beat faster than adult hearts, about 70 to

190 beats per minute.

The

heart pumps about 6 quarts (5.7 litres) of blood

throughout the body.
