Periodontium
Periodontium consists of the investing and
supporting tissues of the tooth (gingiva,
periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar
bone).
It has been divided into two parts: the gingiva,
whose main function is protection of the
underlying tissues, and the attachment apparatus,
composed of the periodontal ligament, cementum,
and alveolar bone.
The word comes from the Greek terms peri-,
meaning "around" and -odons, meaning "tooth."
Literally taken, it means that which is "around the
tooth".
