MFIs?

• What are the measures of ‘financial efficiency’

used by MFIs in Indore?

• What are the factors that affect the use/

awareness of measures of ‘financial efficiency’?
Objectives
• Finding parameters for measuring ‘Financial Efficiency’

• Identifying the parameters of measuring ‘Financial

Efficiency’ used by MFIs in Indore.

• Identifying whether, following factors make a difference

in the usage of various parameters for measuring
‘Financial Efficiency’:-
– Size, Experience, Mode of Lending, Mode of Funding, type of
MFI
Concepts and their operationalisation

Hypothesis
• H1 – There is no significant difference between MFI’s of different
number of active borrowers with respect to their measures of
‘Financial Efficiency’
• H2– There is no significant difference between MFI’s of different
amount of lending with respect to their measures of ‘Financial
Efficiency’
• H3 – There is no significant difference between MFI’s of different
amount of lending with respect to their measures of ‘Financial
Efficiency’
• H4 - The measure of financial efficiency is significantly independent
of the lending model followed by the MFI.

• Identifying factors considered important for measuring ‘Financial

Efficiency’

Proposed Statistical Analysis
• H1, H2, H3
– Step One – Do descriptive analysis
– Step Two – See frequency distribution – If normal,
then z test . OR McNemar Test.
• H4
– Step One – Same as above
– Step Two – Chi Square test ( for strength of
association between variables)
• Factor Analysis – to identify significant factors
Data Collection & Coding
• Nominal Data
• Scaled Data
Expected Outcome
• The prominent parameters used by MFIs to
measure the ‘Financial Efficiency’

• A detailed understanding of ‘financial efficiency’

measures for MFIs in Indore in terms of
variables like Size, Experience, Mode of Lending,
Mode of Funding, type of MFI
Utility of findings
• The research can be useful for MFIs to create an
awareness of ‘Financial Efficiency’.

• The research can be useful for MFIs to become

self sustaining.

• The research can be useful for improving the

operational efficiency of MFIs and thereby
passing on the benefit to lower income class of
Indian economy.
Limitations
Generalizability of findings is questionable
due to
– Small Sample
