OUTLINE
• Dhirubhai returned to India and founded the Reliance Commercial Corporation with
an initial capital of Rs.15000
• Dhirubhai set up the business in partnership with Champaklal Damani from whom
he parted ways in 1965
• Since he could not make large investments, he settled as a spice trader under the
name Reliance Commercial Corporations. He soon started trading spices, sugar,
jaggery, betel nuts and such to Gulf Emirates.
• He focused on low profits, high volumes and rich quality.
• The Sunday Times figured him as one of the top 50 businessmen in Asia
• Dhirubhai Amani is credited with having started the equity cult in India.
ABOUT DHIRUBHAI AMBANI
• In 2016, he was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest
civilian honour for his contributions in trade and industry
• Ambani handed over control of Reliance to his sons, Mukesh and Anil on 1986.
• A Hindi film said to be loosely inspired by the life of Dhirubhai Ambani was
released on 12 January 2007. Guru, directed by filmmaker Mani Ratnam,
cinematography by Rajiv Menon and music by A.R.Rahman shows the struggle of a
man striving to make his mark in the Indian business world with a fictional Shakti
Group of Industries.
