CONCRETE FACE STRESS
During construction:
Tension - compression stresses at the plane of the
concrete face due to settlement of the rockfill. The
stresses are transmitted by friction.
During impounding:
Tension - compression stresses on the horizontal and
slope direction due to hydrostatic pressure over the
concrete face.
Bending stresses on the slope direction due to strains
from the hydrostatic pressure .
STRESS DISTRIBUTION ALONG THE
CONCRETE FACE
Tension zone
Compression zone
FRICTION AT THE CONCRETE FACE DUE
TO THE HYDROSTATIC LOAD
If the strain at the fill is greater than the strain at the concrete
face under the maximum friction load, the concrete slab takes
a load equivalent to the friction force and slip occur at the
contact surface between concrete and fill.
