THE BIRTH OF A HERO
 Known as Dr. Jose Rizal

 JUNE 19, 1861

 CALAMBA, LAGUNA PROVINCE, PHILIPPINES

“I was born in Calamba on the midnight, a few days before full


moon. It was Wednesday and my coming out in this vale of tears
would have cost my mother her life had she not vowed to the virgin of
Antipolo to take me to her sanctuary by way of pilgrimage.”
THE BIRTH OF A HERO
 Baptism of Rizal: June 22, 1861

 At the age of 3

 Baptist by Fr. Rufino Collantes

 As Fr. Pedro Casanas as his godfather

 Jose was chosen by his mother who was a devotee of saint San
Jose(St. Joseph)

“Take good care of this child, for someday he will become a great
man” - Fr. Collantes

FRANCISCO MERCADO RIZAL
- BORN IN BIÑAN, LAGUNA (MAY 11, 1818) (1818-1898)
- Latin and philosophy (College of San Jose in
Manila)

- Tenant-farmer of a Dominican owned


hacienda in Calamba

- Hardy, independent minded, strong in


body, valiant in spirits

- “a model of fathers” – Jose Rizal

- Died in Manila (January 5 1898)

- Born in Manila (November 8 1826)
TEADORA ALONSO REALONDA
(1826-1911)
- Educated at College of Santa Rosa

- Has refined culture, literary talent, business


ability and fortitude

- “My mother is a woman of more than


ordinary culture; she knows literature and
speaks Spanish better I. she corrected my
poems and gave me good advice when I
was studying rhetoric. She is a
mathematician and has read many
books.” – Jose Rizal

- Died in Manila (August 16 1911)


The Rizal Children

Alonso Realonda is blessed with eleven
children. 2 boys and 9 girls.
 Saturnina (1850-1913) - oldest, nicknamed Neneng; she married
Manuel T. Hidalgo.

 Paciano (1852-1930) – older brother, confidant of rizal, had 2


children.

 Narcisa (1852-1939) – her pet name was Sisa, she married Antonio
Lopez.

 Olimpia (1855-1887) – her pet name was Ypia, she married Silvestre
Ubaldo.

 Lucia (1857-1919) – she married Mariano Herbosa

 Maria (1859-1945) – her nickname was Biang, she married Daniel


Faustino Cruz.
 Jose (1861-1896) – the greatest Filipino hero and peerless genius; he
was nicknamed Pepe.

 Concepcion (1862-1865) – her pet name was Concha; died of


sickness at the age of 3; her death was Rizal’s first sorrow in life.

 Josefa (1865-1945) – her pet name was Panggoy; she died an old
maid at the age of 80.

 Trinidad (1868-1951) – Trining was her pet name; she died also an
old maid in a951 aged 83.

 Soledad (1870-1929) – youngest of Rizal children; her pet name was


Choleng; she married Pantaleon Quintero of Calamba.
RIZAL’S ANCESTRY
 Juan Mercado – one of francisco’s and cirila’s sons, grandfather of
rizals. Married Cirila Alejandro, a Chinese-Filipino mestiza. Like his
father, he was elected governadorcillo of binan.

 Francisco Mercado – Rizal's father. The youngest of thirteen children


of juan and cirila. At the age of eight he lost his father. He met and
fall in love with Teodora Alonso Realonda in manila while studying.
They got married on June 28, 1848

 Lakandula – the last native king of tondo. He is a believed ancestor


of dona teodor’s family.
 Eugenio Ursua – Rizal's great-great-grandfather from his mother’s
side. He was of Japanese ancestry. He married a Filipina named
Benigna.

 Regina – the daughter of eugenio and benigna married Manuel de


Quintos, a Filipino-Chinese lawyer from pangasinan. One of their
daughters married Lorenzo Alberto Alonso, a prominent Spanish-
Filipino mestiza of binan; their children were Narcisa, teodora(rizal’s
mother), gregorio, manuel and jose.
THE SURNAME RIZAL

 Mercado – the real name of the Rizal family which was adopted in
1731 by Domingo Lameo

 Rizal – the second surname which was given by a Spanish Alcalde


Mayor of Laguna, who was a family friend. In Spanish it means, “a
field where wheat, cut while still green, sprouts again.”

A GOOD AND MIDDLE
CLASS FAMILY
 The Rizal family belonged to the principalia, a town aristocracy in
Spanish Philippines

 They owned a carriage which was a status symbol of the illustrados


(composed of native-born intellectuals and cut across ethnolinguitic
and racial lines-indios, insulates, and mestizos, among others.)

 They also owned a library, the largest in Calamba, consisting of


more than 1000 volumes.
HOME LIFE OF THE
RIZALS
The Rizal Children were taught and trained:

 To love God

 To behave well

 To be obedient

 To respect people, especially the old folks

They believed In the maxim: “spare the rod and spoil the child”
