Virgilio S. Almario was born in San Miguel, Bulacan and showed an early interest in language. He published two seminal poetry volumes, Makinasyin and Peregrinasyon. By martial law, he was a literature instructor and part-time teacher who had published his first 6 poetry volumes, 3 books on literary history and criticism, and edited literary anthologies. Almario was a tall, controversial figure in contemporary Filipino literature who translated poetry and plays, wrote children's stories, and a manual of style in Tagalog while espousing social justice.
