Contemporary History
Contemporary history, in English-language historiography,
is a subset of modern history which describes the historical
period from approximately 1945 to the present. The term
"contemporary history" has been in use at least since the
early 19th century.
Francisco Balagtas
• Francisco Baltazar y de la Cruz (April 2, 1788 –
February 20, 1862)
• A prominent Filipino poet, and is widely considered
one of the greatest Filipino literary laureates for his
impact on Filipino literature.
• Work: Florante at Laura
 Full title: Pinagdaanang Buhay nina Florante
at Laura sa Kahariang Albanya Kinuha sa
madlang "cuadro histórico" o pinturang
nagsasabi sa mga nangyari nang unang
panahon sa Imperyo ng Gresya.
 The story is about the love and determination
of the Duke Florante and the Princess Laura of
Albania while being pursued by the usurper
Count Adolfo.
 Balagtas wrote the epic during his
imprisonment.
 He dedicated it to his sweetheart María
Asuncion Rivera.
Francisco Arcellana
• September 6, 1916 – August 1, 2002
• He became a member of The Torres Torch
Organization during his high school years.
• He received a Rockefeller Grant and became a
fellow in Creative Writing at the University of Iowa and
at the Breadloaf Writers' Conference from 1956– 1957.
• Work: Through a Glass, Darkly
 This book compiles prose works of National Artist
Francisco Arcellana.
 Comprising of columns written just after the
Pacific War, introductions to books of fellow
writers, commencement speeches, interviews
with students, and papers delivered on the
sidelines of a workshop.
 It presents another side of the writer, whose
centennial was celebrated in 2016.
Lualhati Bautista
• Born December 2, 1945
• One of the foremost Filipino female novelists in the
history of contemporary Philippine literature.
• Bautista was born in Tondo, Manila, Philippines on
December 2, 1945, to Esteban Bautista and Gloria
Torres.
• She was a journalism student at the Lyceum of the
Philippines, but dropped out because she had
always wanted to be a writer and schoolwork was
taking too much time.
• Work: Bata, Bata… Paano ka ginawa?
 A novel written in Tagalog by the Filipino female
writer, Lualhati Bautista.
 The novel is about the role of a woman, like its
author, with Filipino society wherein the males
were, in the past, assuming more dominant
roles in society.
Carlos Bulosan
• November 24, 1913 – September 11, 1956
• Was an English-language Filipino novelist and poet
who immigrated to America on July 1, 1930.
• He never returned to the Philippines and he spent
most of his life in the United States.
• He first gained fame for his 1943 essay on The
Freedom from Want.
• Work: America is in the Heart
 A 1946 semi-autobiographical novel.
 Presented the experiences of the immigrant
and working class based on an Asian
American point of view and has been
regarded as the “premier text of the Filipino-
American experience."
Cecilia Manguerra
Brainard
• Born 1947
• Grew up in Cebu City, Philippines, the youngest of four
children to Concepcion Cuenco Manguerra and
Mariano F. Manguerra.
• An author and editor of 20 books.
• She co-founded PAWWA or Philippine American Women
Writers and Artists; and also founded Philippine
American Literary House.
• Work: Cecilia’s Diary
 Set in the early 1960s, these are recollections set in
an idyllic time, as seen from the eyes of a playful
and innocent young girl who discovers solace and
self in the blank pages of a diary.
 Cecilia’s Diary traces the author’s own experiences
as a young woman of religious and privileged
upbringing.
