FRANCISCO BALAGTAS

• Full Name: Francisco Balagtas y de la


Cruz (April 2, 1788 – February 20, 1862)

• He is widely considered one of the


greatest Filipino literary laureates for his
impact on Filipino literature

NICK JOAQUIN
• (May 4, 1917, Paco, Manila - April 29, 2004, San Juan)
• Filipino novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, and
biographer whose works present the diverse heritage of
the Filipino people.
• He also wrote using the pen name Quijano de Manila.
• Joaquin was conferred the rank and title of National
Artist of the Philippines for Literature in 1976.

JOSE DELA CRUZ

• Born: December 21, 1746, Tondo


• Died: March 12, 1829, Manila
• Prominent with the use of Corrido
• More popularly known as “Huseng Sisiw”, was one of the great
Tagalog writers during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines.
• He was given the title of “Hari ng Makatang Tagalog” or “King of
Tagalog Poetry”.
• My works have their own minds. I thought that I do not
need a book that is expensive, but a book that has
substance and meaning.

MARCELO H. DEL PILAR

• Born on: August 30, 1850 Bulacan


• Died: July 4, 1896 (aged 45) Barcelona, Spain
• Writer, lawyer, journalist, freemason
• For his 150 essays and 66 editorials mostly published in
La Solidaridad and various anti-friar pamphlets, del Pilar
is widely regarded as the "Father of Philippine
Journalism."
• Father of Philippine Masonry (refers to a fraternal
organization)
• His pen names are; Plaridel, Pupdoh, Piping Dilat and
Dolores Manapat

• It was called anti-friar pamphlets because its


main aim and point was to use literary works
to denounce the authority of friars.
• These pamphlets were considered as the
creative way of being revolutionary against
the hypocrisy of the Spanish friars.
LUALHATI BAUTISTA

• Born: December 2, 1945, Tondo


• Died: February 12, 2023, Quezon City
• Lualhati Torres Bautista was a Filipina writer, novelist,
liberal activist and political critic.
• Her stories usually feature a strong female protagonist with
plots revolving around the themes of social injustice,
activism, and women empowerment.

and scenes in the novel are inspired
by real people and their
experiences. The book also
recounts actual events in Philippine
history.

the life of Lea, a women's rights activist
who struggles to raise her children as a

job at a women's crisis center. A film
adaptation directed by Chito S. Roño was
released in 1998.
CARLOS BULOSAN

• (November 24, 1913– September 11, 1956) was a


Filipino novelist and poet and labor union organizer
who immigrated to the United States on July 1, 1930.
• He never returned to the Philippines and he spent most
of his life in the United States.
• His best-known work today is the semi-
autobiographical America Is in the Heart, but he first
gained fame for his 1943 essay on The Freedom from
Want.

• Is a semi-autobiographical novel published in


1946 .
• It is one of the few books that detail the
migrant workers' struggles in the United States
during the 1930s through the 1940s, a time
when signs like "Dogs and Filipinos not
allowed" were common. The struggles included
"beatings, threats, and ill health"
PEDRO BUCANEG

• (March 1592 – 1630)


• He is considered the "Father of Ilocano literature." Blind since birth.
The author of the epic Biag ni Lam – ang.
• A street inside the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) complex in
Pasay, Philippines is named in his honor. His surname is lent to the
Bukanegan, the Ilocano equivalent of the Balagtasan.
• He translated the Doctrina Cristiana in Ilocano.
• Was also largely responsible for Arte de la Lengue Iloca, the first
grammar book of the Ilocano of Brother Francisco Lopez, which was
printed in 1627 by the University of Santo Tomas.

• Is believed to be from Quezon City, Philippines


• Is the pseudonym of a contemporary Filipino author known
for using conversational writing technique to create
humorous and reflective depictions of Philippine life.
• The author's actual name and identity are unknown.

CARLOS P. ROMULO

• (January 14, 1899 – December 15, 1985)


Camiling, Tarlac.
• Was a Filipino diplomat, statesman, soldier,
journalist and author.
• He was a reporter at the age of 16, a
newspaper editor by 20, and a publisher at 32.
CARLOS P. ROMULO

• He was a co-founder of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, a


general in the US Army and the Philippine Army, university
president, and president of the United Nations General
Assembly.
• Wrote and published 22 books in total, including The
United (novel), I Walked with Heroes (autobiography), I
Saw the Fall of the Philippines, Mother America, and I See
the Philippines Rise (war-time memoirs)
• A recipient of National artist for literature awards
