Fluid Control Research Institute (FCRI)

 Flow and Fluids Engineering Facility

 Dedicated to the Nation by the then

President of India – Shri R Venkataraman in
1989.

 Techno-economics inputs from UNDP/UNIDO

 One of the Best Research and Calibration/Test

Laboratories.
CALIBRATION AND TESTING

 CALIBRATION is the comparison

of MEASUREMENT values delivered by a device
under test with those of a Calibrated Standard of
known ACCURACY.
 Troxler Calibration.

 TESTING is the conformity to some established

procedure where the Genuineness of something is
determined.
 Pressure Test in Pipes
THE NEED FOR CALIBRATION

 Initial calibration by manufacturers

 To confirm uncertainty by users
 Improvement of uncertainty
 After major repairs
 Joint calibration under dispute
 Legal/contractual obligations

FACILITIES
AIR FLOW LABORATORY

Testing/Calibration of flow products/control devices for

quality and Reliability.

SERVICES

Automotive, aerospace, Pharmaceuticals & Health care,

Gas distribution & Process industries,
Flow meter manufactures, Research & Development
centers, Academic institutes etc.

These calibration facilities at FCRI are traceable to

national and international standards.
Air Release Valves

Discharge Capacity
Specification :
Pressure : Up to 100 mbar
Temperature : Ambient
Flow rate : 10, 000 m³/h
Uncertainty : ±1 %

Suction Capacity
Specification :
Pressure : Near Ambient
Temperature : 25±1 °C
Flow rate : 10, 000 m³/h
Uncertainty : ±0.3 %
OIL FLOW LABORATORY
The Oil flow laboratory is the only one of its kinds in India, which can be
effectively utilized to build up a flow measurement system with least
uncertainty.

METHOD OF CALIBRATION

Static Gravimetric Weighing

Method
This laboratory is mainly used for the
calibration of flow meters used in custody
transfer.

The method includes the checking of the

flow meter at various flow rates, correcting
the indication of the flow meter by the
customer if necessary and then calibrating
it further at various flow rates

Examples
 Fuel Pump Testing
 Prover System – On site Calibration
CENTRE FOR WATER
MANAGEMENT

 Testing and Calibrating of Flow products.

 Development and Testing of Technologies for

Flow Control and Measurement.

 Aim at implementing technologies for solving

flow related problems.
- Using EPANET to Analyse Networks

 Consultancy services
WATER METER

A water meter is a device that measures the volume of

water that passes through it.
All water meters consist of four basic components:
a sensor to detect the flow,
a transducer to transmit the flow signal,
a counter to keep track of the total volume having
passed through the meter,
and an indicator to display the meter reading.
WHY METERING

Proper billing against actual consumption

Conservation & equitable distribution
Data for analysis/studies
Assessment of Water demand/allocation
Assessment of wastage/leakage

Distribution system study

Determination of pricing policy
Testing Standards: WATERMETERS

There are Indian standards and International standards for testing of

watermeters. The standard is selected as per the customer requirement.

Normally the standards that the FCRI follow are:

 IS 779: 1994
 IS 2373: 1981
 IS 6784: 1996
 ISO 4064-1: 1993, 2005
 ISO 4064-3: 1999, 2005

In addition to IS and ISO Standards, tests are also conducted in reference

with EEC and OIML standards.
TYPES OF TESTS:

1) Routine test
1) Hydrostatic Pressure test/ Pressure tightness test
2) Accuracy/flow test
3) Pressure Loss test

2) Temperature Suitability test

3) Endurance/Life cycle test
Class I Flowmeters - Moving parts to operate.

 Positive displacement and turbine flowmeters,

 Utilize high tolerance machined moving.
 Subject to wear and damage,
 Measuring clean fluids.

Class II Flowmeters –No moving parts.

 Orifice plate, and vortex flow meters.
 Fluids other than clean fluids can be handled.
 Very dirty fluids and very abrasive fluids may pose long
term wear problems
Class III or Obstructionless flowmeters

• Allow the fluid to pass through the flowmeter

undisturbed, such as magnetic flowmeters.
• Advantage of these meters is that it can be used for
dirty and abrasive fluids.

Class IV are flowmeters

• Ultrasonic flowmeter that have sensors located

external to the pipe.
LAB PROJECT
METER ORIENTATION
SUGGESTIONS

 Domestic Meter to be fixed in Horizontal

Position

 Sample Testing ( Leaks) on Fittings such

as Valves and Meters etc.

 To consider Codes and Specs from the

Indian Standard apart from the British
Standard
